Has anyone made experiences with mobile gamepads? They connect to your smartphone via bluetooth and allow you to practically turn it into a handheld console

Since there's no way past a smartphone these days (unless you want to buy something like the Nvidia Shield), I thought this would be a decent option for someone who wants to play emulated retro games on the go

Best rated on Amazon seems to be the "MOGA Pro Power" (pic related), which is also one of the more expensive ones though:
http://www.amazon.com/POWER-MOGA-Pro-Electronic-Games-Game/dp/B00FB5RBJM/

Thoughts, experiences?

I fucked around with Bluetooth gamepads for a long time and had some good experiences with them but they tend to have spotty compatibility because there's so many and so many revisions.

In the end I just bought a used Xperia Play. The whole thing is no bigger than a typical bluetooth controller by itself and it runs all the emulators just as well as any other Android device runs them since it's more a problem of optimization than it is of sheer horsepower and it's nice to be able to run my game's battery completely into the ground and not worry about missing phone calls. Also, you get to be one of those guys that carries two cell phones (Cheater? Dealer?) instead of some guy that carries around a game controller (Nerd? Loser?)

If the X-Play is too underpowered for you then get an Nvidia Shield, which is a beast but won't fit in your pocket. There are some inbetween offerings from JXD and a couple others but I really gotta suggest either going small (X-Play) or going big (Shield)

MOGA's decent, and DOES work with emulators. I have the old Pro myself, but the Bluetooth is so shit that the controls become garbage if not properly optimized by the coders.

Just get an OTG cable since you probably have console controllers just hanging around. Dualshock, USB gamepads, w/e just works usually with an OTG cable. Much cheaper than getting a MOGA.

The resolution doesn't really matter that much if you're just using to play retro games. N64, Dreamcast, PS1 and PSP do look better at a higher res, but considering these were originally played at maybe 480p at best it doesn't really matter that much. 8-bit and 16-bit games actually look better at a lower resolution.

I use a Moga Pro Power. It's a very solid gamepad that feels great with emulators, and since my phone is rooted I have been able to make custom screen maps for a couple of mobile games that don't have native gamepad support-- pretty much any twin-stick shooter is going to play well that way, an other games too.

My only complaint with the Pro Power is that it is not very portable. If you often carry around a bookbag or backpack like me, that is not a problem, but it is not a pocket-sized solution. Ideally, we would just have something that plugs directly into the phone and turns it into an Xperia Play with better specs, but so far the only stuff like that I've seen is for the iPhone, and I use a Galaxy S4.

Also worth looking at if you're a real bitch about the Shield's 5" screen is the Wikipad with a 7" screen at release (down from 10" or I'd have my eyes on THAT pad). Solid controls on the Wikipad I guess but despite the bigger screen the specs are worse than Shield and it's more expensive.

Since I got myself a Galaxy Note 3 (recently updated to android 4.4.2) I decided to get it some company for emulation: a bluetooth gamepad. Due to my curse of indecisiveness, I just decided to crapshoot on a Moga Hero Power.

So far, for emulation, I've only tried RetroArch. However, the gamepad support for that is horrible. Analog controls don't work at all, and there's severe input lag (even for the onscreen overlay). Apparently, there's a new version coming out that's supposed to fix all that. I definitely hope so.

I've tested it with several other games (like Metal Slug 3, bless you Humble Bundle) and it works just fine with them. There's almost zero lag.

Should I keep on waiting for retroarch to get better?
