It wont read roms, but it's an easy solution to playing your physical carts on an HDTV.

It dumps partial ROM data to the system and emulates the console. It outputs an HDMI signal as well. So your games come out looking just like a ROM with no filters.

It's for people who want to play physical games with original controllers. Anyone who owns a good CRT TV and the original console shouldn't even bother.

Only other benefit is that it can do sve states and cheat engine.

I've owned several GCs, for over a decade and none of them ever had any laser problems. Try cleaning the fucking thing anon. Either that, or don't throw it around.

Actually, the only console I ever had any laser troubles with at all was the Dreamcast. Owned 5 of them at various times: 2 of the lasers just stopped working (though I dropped one of them), 2 of them only read what discs they liked after a few months and I gave the last one away, lol.

I watched Pat's review of Retron 5 and according to it

When ALL of these are in effect at the same time I'd say it isn't worth it.

That said I kinda like the idea of these systems that play games made for various systems but until someone makes one that comes close to 100% compatibility with the games it tries to run and is also able to use all accessories made for those systems I wouldn't buy one especially if they rely on emulation instead of their hardware to make the games work on them. And flashcart support is a must nowadays.

This is really disappointing. I was following this system from the beginning (when it was still the 'RetroN 4') and it seems like it's just been a downward spiral. The idea sounds great on paper (especially bridging the gap from physical to digital similar to the Retrode) but Hyperkin has really been all over the place with this project. If you're living in North America then we've gone from "after June" 2013 to possibly after this month, a year later before an official release.

Also, what is it with clones getting so expensive lately? Something like this would've cost maybe $80 at best a few years ago. I could get a proper handheld Android device for the same price and run everything up to Dreamcast and PSP on it.

Hearing that this thing is a glorified emulator box is pretty disappointing. The cartridge slots are pointless if they are just running off of an emulator anyway. I will just keep playing on my glorious old retro consoles, and use my PC / phone if I want emulation.

I'll never understand why people shitpost all over these threads. Last time I checked, all consoles emulated what the dev tools did. Anyway, I think the retron is a good buy for a certain audience other than mouth breathing hipsters. If anything, it's an affordable HD upscaler and console all in one.
