So my favourite game is Grim Fandango, to play it on a modern system the best way is to use Residual VM. Just copy the game data on HDD and point the Residual to the game folder. No installation. This shit also plays Escape from Monkey Island...

There are detailed installation instructions on GF deluxe blog... which also has some neat stuff like:
- point&click interface mods
- new high-poly models
- better textures

There was a bug in the game, that was discovered 12 YEARS after the game release! The bug prevented Many to talk to Domino at The End of the World. Guys at Residual made the patch a part of the VM.

Here's Tim Schafers tweet about it:
https://twitter.com/TimOfLegend/status/136970659535400960

The guy who solved it:
http://lostsoulsalliance.wordpress.com/2011/11/21/recent-developments-ii/

And the clip:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMQcy5qt-5g

You could avoid the bug in vanilla game version by avoiding to talk to Domino in year one. The speedrunners figured it out.

IIRC, EFMI actually had really good puzzles. The main issue I had with it personally was the shitty and abrupt ending. It just gave me the impression that they just ran out of time or money and decided to wrap it up. It didn't feel properly finished.

Retcons and shitty controls killed it for me. I mean, I'm not super invested in the Monkey Island canon or anything, but it was just so unnecessary to overwrite SoMI's backstory and turn the monkey head into some stupid fucking robot.

Wassup bitches, I'm back....

So anyhow, last year I stumbled upon a site 101 hardcore gaming, and the founder loves p&c. He released a book about adventure games, it has a preview on the site and it's REALLY GOOD. He covered a lot, and some things really in depth:

So the guy, Kurt Kalata, has kept Grim Fandango review offline, like it's gonna sell his book... but eventually gave up and released the review online. GF review is not available though his "book preview" menu, you need a direct link to it:

So the brain behind the Grim Fandango is Tim Schafer, you can see his pic in the GF group shot.

No. I don't think it's bugged. Perhaps just Windows 7 and wrong quicktime versions.

I played the first 3 simon games so will give what little information I know and have found.

Simon 1 and 2 are adventure comedy games. But they're set in a fantasy location, drawing from C.S Lewis, tolkien etc. They follow the story of a British teenager who gets sent to the fantasy world from his bedroom and has to find a way back home.

The 3rd game is 3D and the 4th and 5th lose the British charm massively, they're not even made by the same people so I would give them a miss.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_the_Sorcerer

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_the_Sorcerer_II:_The_Lion,_the_Wizard_and_the_Wardrobe

The designer of the games Simon Woodroffe, is a well-known British adventure game designer, being involved in other classics such as Feeble files and Waxworks.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Feeble_Files

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waxworks_(1992_video_game)

All these games were made by simon Woodroffe companies (waxworks was horrorsoft's last game before becoming adventure soft).

After these companies unfortunately went belly up he went on to form headfirst productions, which released Call of Cthulu: Dark corners of the Earth.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Corners_of_the_Earth

Since this didn't work out either, Simon has worked for Midway, Ubisoft and as SEGA’s Head of Game Design for SEGA West.

>> No.1683897

>>1683889

In 2012 Simon Woodroffe moved to Rare: http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2012/04/17/simon-woodroffe-joins-rare/.. He still remains there and can be found on the twitter: https://twitter.com/SimonSorcerer

As far as a magnum opus I would say the Feeble Files is his best point and click, it's the biggest, originally coming on 4 discs for Windows (mainly due to large cutscenes). The story, although funny, never gets to the point where you don't empathise with the main character, Feeble, because he is just so beta (indeed the games tagline was: "Rebellion has never looked so pathetic").

Simon has tweeted that he did not like how Simon 3D turned out, and would be happy to some day take on the project to make a real Simon 3.

Before Simon 3 shifted to 3D, Adventure Soft released a bunch of screenshots, they can be viewed here

The first two Simon games were not just created by brothers, almost all of the Woodroffe family shipped in to make it happen. The credits for Simon 2 are highly interesting to watch.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Blazing Dragons yet — it's one of my favourite p&c adventures of all time. Terry Jones (of Monty Python fame) was behind the animated series and the game, so you know the puzzles will be weird and the humour zany and Pythonesque.

For some reason it was never released on PC; pick it up on PSX or Saturn if you're interested. It's also a rare example of a game that was never released in Japan.

I don't care for either RealMyst but something you can't see clearly from this video is the significantly improved textures in the new one. It seemed like they've messed up some of the color balance and contrast in places, but original RealMyst looks pretty bad whenever you get close to anything. the idea with schäfers games is usually that you can let go of any notion of real-life logic and adapt to a weird computergame logic. it really pisses me of though when you already figured most of it out but there are mutliple mechanics in the game that do similar things and you have to find the right one for no apparent reason. i thought for the longest time that you should make the teeth imprints in the first year of GF with the packing foam instead. the solution makes more sense, but this happens to me a lot. And grim had some really almost unsolvable ones like the marrow tree in the forrest - i used a guide for that one, i'll admit.
