1674003 No.1674003[DELETED]  [Reply] [Original]

Let's have a serious discussion about how to put a stop to the reseller menace.

>> No.1674007

We can't.

We either suck it up and keep paying outrageous price or we just stop and wait a few years until no one cares about old games and can pay decent prices for them.

Or they end up even more expensive instead.

>> No.1674006

>>1674003
let's make repros and sell them for the price of the original cart? IIRC earthbound fits on NHL 97'. and some other cheap jap games.

>> No.1674008

>>1674003
Never pay their outlandish prices, never initiate conversation about them, buy flash carts and mod chips, support translation projects and homebrew communities, support your local game shops if they have fair prices.

>> No.1674009

Simply don't buy overpriced games...

I really want to buy earthbound, super metroid, demon's crest and megaman X (I missed the chance to get back in the day), and I could because I'm rich, but I just calmly wait until one day I can get them at a fair price, because fuck those reseller faggots.

>> No.1674013

Stop buying them.

Educate the public about them over charging.

That's just it anons. We can't pay their outlandish prices because we aren't their target consumers.

They monopolise the carts and sell them to gullible hipsters and pretend gamers with rich parents.

>>1674006
Repros (bootlegs) are somewhat dangerous... eventually people won't mention they are repros (or just won't know) and they'll mix into the legit cartridges market.
I don't want to have to systematically open my cartridges to know if they are legit or not...

>> No.1674020

Ignore SNES games and go collect other retro stuff that isn't retardedly expensive yet.

Just wait until people go "YEAH SEGA SO AWESOME XD" and they become 10 times more expensive.

I can't believe the hipster crowd didn't jump on the genesis yet considering is not quite as popular as the nintendo.

4)They're now cheap as fuck.

Another thread whining about "reseller scum"? I have a newsflash for you guys THEY ARE NOT THE PROBLEM. The actual problem is the video game collectors, not the kind that buys games in order to PLAY them but the kind that buys games just for the sake of having them sitting on their shelves never to be touched ever again. These collectors are often willing to pay any prise for the games missing from their collection especially if they are in MINT condition.

Now ask yourself this: If YOU were the one selling a copy of Earthbound, Mr. Gimmick or any other overprised game would YOU sell them for those "outrageous prices" people are willing to pay for them (and bitch and whine about here on /vr/) or would you purposely sell them way below their value in order to do the "right thing"? Let's face it doing the latter would be being a dumbass.

Holy shit, this is horrible.

I propose we pool some money, get as many games as we can and copy them, so that, even in the situation where there's hardware shortage, or some malevolent group becomes too active in the market, we would still be able to access the games themselves for historical, research and entertainment purposes.

Oh wait. That's already been done. We're fine! And the resellers and collectors are free to tear each other's throats out, we'd only win.

Collectors are the problem, not resellers. The minute a collector agrees to pay that price it sends ripples across the marketplace and prices raise. This keeps going as long as collectors keep buying. When the buying stops, the prices fall.

I don't get you /vr/. Most of you seem to collect retro games yet you get butthurt if someone makes money by selling them to you. Why is this? You seriously don't get the fact that people selling games to you have increased their prices over the years due to the demand for them YOU have caused by collecting them?

Earthbound is a perfect case of a point, its price has increased to ridiculous degrees due to the fact it has become a cult classic everyone must have in their collection and it is people like you that caused the game to get it's cult classic status by constantly praising it and never shutting up about it on the internets in the first place. If you just want to play it just emulate it or buy a flashcart to play it on actual SNES instead of bitching and whining about it being too expensive here. If you absolutely must have a physical copy of it then you just need to suck it up and pay that outrageous price that you are partially responsible for.

I have no other information, just wisps of memory from an old thread where someone described the mess in detail, with photos of some douchebag with a Lamborghini and Neo Geo stuff, talking about how he was wrecking shit in some deluded quest to increase the rarity of his collection, and some gaming convention drama. It was years ago, well before I bought my Neo Geo, and I own exactly zero AES carts.

This

Why do you collectors HAVE to own this game? Who among you have even played it to completion three or more times like your other favorites?

No you just want to stick it on your shelves to get another quick high because your brain is arbitrarily compelling you to own this piece of plastic.

>> No.1674272

>>1674243
That's not how it works at all though.

The price is inflated artificially. I went into town to sell some games today and literally every single second hand games shop just checks Amazon and eBay and then gives you like a tenth of that price under the pretence that it is sooo expensive to clean a disc and the prices on eBay and Amazon are caused by idiot snowballing. People check eBay and Amazon to see how much they should be listing them on eBay and Amazon, ergo all you have to do to make it impossible to buy a game is list it for an inordinate amount of money and wait for people to go "Oh, my game is valuable after all! Forget all these 99 cent auctions with 2 hours to go. Buy it now, 1 million dollars".

And guess who profits from this, that's right. Resellers. Resellers list shit like this >>1674094 knowing full well it will never sell so that people will play copycat and they can swoop in and sell all of their shit for 10 times the value just because it is lower than the parade of idiots overvaluing their garbage.

I have an easier time completing games I actually paid money for. Not that I don't emulate stuff. I just have a higher chance of dropping an emulated game than a real copy.

And it's not like I don't drop game I bought too.
