It didn't get a translation because DBZ only got big in america many years later.

In France it was already popular starting from DB with the 80s... I still have the french intro song stuck in my head. Then again France imported a shit load of anime, like Candy Candy and that one soccer show (not captain tsubasa but that italian/japanese co-production).

Super Butoden 2 is actually my favorite DBZ game of all time.

The game was officially released in france and I think in spain, this was because DB/DBZ was really popular in Europe during the early 90s, they got the manga published there and all.

Curiously enough, Super Butoden 2 was going to have an english release in america. Ban Dai was working on a localization, and I've seen screenshots of that version myself, they were published on a club nintendo magazine from south america. Game's title was simply "Dragon Ball" (no Z), and they changed the names of some characters, I believe Broly was renamed Tara.

Anyway, since Dragon Ball wasn't popular in the US back in the mid 90s, Ban Dai decided to cancel the release.

And.. doing a quick google search I found the scans of the magazine I was talking about.

The only people that cared about DBZ in the US were anime fans. Dragon Ball got some proto dubs in the US, the very first one was in thelate 80s, by Harmony Gold (the guys who did "robotech" by bastardizing 3 different animes), in that early dub, Goku was called Zero. In South America we got a spanish dub based on that english dub in the early 90s. Then in the mid 90s, latin america got all of Dragon Ball with a proper dub worked from scratch.
Back in US, I think Funimation dubbed a few of the DBZ films, I think the first 3, and only released them on video... I seem to remember they also dubbed the first DBZ episodes and released on VHS, but yeah, it didn't really worked outside of the otaku circles. They even released some trading cards, I have some of them (pic related).
DBZ only got really popular in the US in the early 2000s, with Toonami.
In the rest of the world, Dragon Ball and DBZ was already huge since the 80s and 90s.

It started getting popular from the mid to late 90s (I think). Butouden 2 was released in 92 or 93.

Once DBZ started getting popular, the games started getting localized as well. I think the first they released in english was one of the Playstation 1 fighting games? Either Ultimate Battle 22 or the DBGT one?

Big Goemon fan here.

Super Butoden 2 might as well be one of my favorite 2D fighting games ever, along with Fatal Fury Special and Street Fighter Alpha 3/ SF III 3rd strike.
It's really good and has unique mechanics. The split screen was a really good idea for a DBZ fighting game. It started in Super Butoden 1, but SB2 perfected pretty much everything.
Hyper Dimension is good, but it's more like a mediocre (read: not bad, just mediocre) 2D fighting game with nothing interesting going on other than it has a DBZ character roster.

Ocean dubbed Dragon Ball for US, but after the 53 episodes (67 uncut) and 3 movies it stopped also due to being unpopular on the WB network Kids WB block. It came back in 1998 on CN/Toonami and they replayed the first 53 episodes over and over and due to popularity Funimation picked it back up and dubbed it here in Texas themselves.

Around 2005 or 2006 I believe they dubbed the first 67 uncut since they didn't do it before (on Toonami/CN) and it is on their DVDs and other sets. It got popular once Funimation picked it up in late 1999/2000 like you said.

Funi even released a 'Rock the Dragon' set which is pretty much the first 53 episodes and 3 movies that Ocean dubbed.

Ocean dub sucks primairly because they edited the shit out of it.

Just like in the 80s and early 90s with Dragon Ball too with the other dubbing groups.

I remember it always being on Namek and then suddenly new voices and the story actually was progressing again. So odd to me at the time.

>> No.1674749 [DELETED]

>Ocean dub

The entire dub was FUNimation's from beginning to end. Ocean's only a group of voice actors who were hired when FUNimation was getting funding from Saban. When Saban bailed on FUNi, they literally had no money and were forced to hire new actors off the streets of Texas to impersonate the original cast. The old dub had to be edited down because it was in syndication, where any blood and references to death is a big no-no (This is also why Kai had to be severely edited in syndication compared to the lax nature of Nicktoons). The movies that FUNimation and Pioneer dubbed with the Ocean cast were entirely uncut (And had the original music to boot).

Here's a fun fact: Robotech started life as just a Macross dub (they even got as far as releasing a VHS tape of the first couple eps), but that had to changed when it turned out they needed 60-something episodes for syndication, which Macross's 36 episodes didn't cover. This led to them licensing two other anime series, Southern Cross and Mospeada, to use as "sequels" to Macross. This is really noticeable if you watch Robotech and its base series back to back, as the first third of Robotech is pretty much dubbed Macross + name changes while the other two anime's stories were altered to fit Macross's story.

But being Mexican I remember back in the early 2000's that Telemundo released the Mexican dub of DBZ in the afternoon. I remember going to Mexico and Canel 5 had GT and it was ok. Ahh the memories. Funi's is good too I guess.

I like those ones that have the Makafushigi Adventure motif in them

The first two DBZ movies had a couple of tracks with that:

In 1998 the dollar was 10 pesos approximately.

I remember going to Tucson and buying 19.99 dollars games with 200 pesos.

So it was 50 dollars.

I think there's also an SNES version of that game as well.

There is good news on another front for LoGH fans. Someone has started translating the original novels. We'll see if they have the fortitude to see it through.

The problem with LP is the fact that the game's memory is much too small for all of the text. Japanese is already a highly compact language, and Konami had to run a compression algorithm to compress all the text. Essentially, the only way to make this work in English is if the ROM was hacked to have more than 512KB of program data, and if there was a custom VRC7 that could address the expanded data.

>> No.1683102

>>1682379
ROM expansion has been done many, many times for other translations and ROM hacks. I think the main hacker just hasn't had time to work on it.

Shit on a stick, his old voice was much better.
I remember an interview to his old voice actor and the guy began improvising some lines as his Vegeta and Sakuragi Hanamichi roles.
Shit was cash and impossible to not laugh when you hear Vegeta talking about basketball and Hanamichi talking about Kakarotto.

Freezer's old VA was better as well.

Close combat is good too, you've got throws, meteor attacks and close-range energy blasts. Anyway, the game is about balancing both close-rang ean long-range attacks. It's a pretty fun and unique fighting game especially if you play with someone who also knows how to play well. Also, using the cheat to enable the Turbo speed makes the game even better.

ItaliAnon here.
Every child of the 80s in Italy is a weeb at heart. We all watched Japanese cartoons as kids because there's little to no tradition of Italian animation and American cartoons outside of Warner, Disney and HB were generally bad back then. And even if the cartoon /was/ Disney or Warner or HB, there was no guarantee it'd be good. Most of them were bad, too. Or, at the very least, unpopular in Italy.

The Japanese cartoons were almost always good and were all very, very popular. Dash Kappei was only ever aired in Japan and Italy, IIRC. Same with Kabutsu-kun.
We're all fucking weebs in Italy.

There's 2 DBZ game on saturn, Legends and Shin Butoden.
Legends was also released on PS1, but the Saturn version runs better.
Shin Butoden is exclusive to Saturn and is IMO one of the best 2D DBZ fighting games ever made along with Super Butoden 2.
It uses the sprites from Ultimate Battle 22 from PS1, but it's a totally different game, UB22 is a really dull fighting game, whereas Shin Butoden plays just like the other Super Butoden games and has a great roster, definitely reccommended.

Yeah Yatterman was super popular in Italy, as was Hokuto no Ken. Europe, Middle East, and South America all got a shitload of anime in the 70s and 80s, even before the big anime boom in the 2000s

>DBZ only got really popular in the US in the early 2000s, with Toonami.
Fucking this.
I hate it when people call DBZ "a 90s show" when talking about nostalgia for old American pop culture. The FUNimation cast didn't even take over until 1999, and DBZ ended up taking off around late '99 to early 2000. It peaked from 2000 to 2005-ish (when they aired those Uncut episodes at 10:30PM on Cartoon Network), at least that's how I remembered it.

This is true. Italy is the only country to have added more to the Disney "Duck Universe" (Ducktales and stuff) than the US has, mostly in the form of comics. God, I must have had literally hundreds of Duck Universe comics in the 90s.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Donald_Duck_universe_characters
Notice how many are Italian additions to the franchise? It's ridiculous.

On the more serious side of comics, Diabolik is very, very good as is Dylan Dog but both yielded absolutely horrendous live-action films. Simply ghastly how bad they were even though the books were wonderful.

And on the satirical, Sturmtruppen is an amazingly poignant comic book.
