Slow games like Text adventures and Point and clicks usually had slow puzzle based gameplay and good atmosphere, but these games always had moments when everything would start speeding up uncontrollably.

Like in castle of the winds, which is normally slow as fuck since it waits for you input every time. As soon as you get paralized by a gelatinous glob, the computer takes 50 turns in a row and they all happnen in less than a second and the text just keeps scrolling up and before you know it you have 5 health left It's fucking terrifying.

Not all slow game had moments like these, but it was impossible to know for sure when that wereworlf silhouette was going to just start clawing the fuck out of you while you try to type a comand.

Or the giant fish in Riven. That fucking giant fish. I spent more time on my first playthrough of riven and myst keeping my nerves steady than I did paying attention to the puzzles.
Sure, NOW I know it's fine, but back then I had very little trust. It's like playing a baseball game just outside of a woods w
here a mountain lion was spotted. Yeah, the lion isn't part of the game, but this game isn't in a professional stadium with a good fence. What's stopping it from becoming a game of run faster than the slowest kid?

Even playing shadowgate a few years ago for the first time made me nervous

I was a wee lad when I played Ocarina of Time.

I used to hate turning into adult like because you had to run through a desecrated Hyrule town with screaming (what I thought to be zombies at the time) reDeads everywhere.
Whenever I heard their moaning, I got freaked the fuck out

Also, I always found the forest temple to be way creepier than the other ones, even the shadow temple. It seemed to be much subtler about its creepiness, it wasn't too over the top like the shadow temple was, and that music still makes my heart go faster.

Shadow President, especially when you drop a nuke to some poor country for no reason. No cutesy bullshit, no "FUCK YEAH" macho bullshit, just plain numbers, cold statistics, and harsh reality. You'd think you would feel great for accomplishing something, but then you see the big red text "DEATH TOLL" and the rising number of dead you really start to feel really uncomfortable.
You will probably get assassinated after doing that, so that's pretty fucking creepy too. You don't see or hear the assassins coming, you just hear loud bangs and the screen fills with blood and bullet holes. The game theme song is really creepy too.

My cousin made me watch her play it when I was super young. Traumatized the shit out of me. I slept with the blankets pulled over my head until I was like 12 because I thought the zombies couldn't get me that way. She also made me sit through Steel Harbinger. Anybody remember that piece of shit? Tons of gore, though. There was a scene where someone got impaled by tentacles or something- but it fucked me up.

I was equally horrified of ReDeads- like, to the point where I couldn't bring myself to play Brawl with items on. Once, when I was playing OoT, I got stuck in Hyrule Castle Town and, being a dumb stupid idiot baby- didn't understand that "Save" doesn't save you from the situation. Every time I turned on the N64, I was right back in that spot. Awful.

I remember walking in on another game being played- a body was stuffed in a washing machine or something. I wanna say it was like Blood 2 or something, but that gave me so many chills- I couldn't play games with gore in them for a loooooong time.

Sorry for the tl;dr, just get super autist about my babby memories with games that really aren't that scary in retrospect. I'm a lot less of a chickenshit now. More importantly, I think my cousin had a baby like super young so revenge I guess.

AFTER Chaos has killed almost every major NPC, you get a brief tour going back and looking at them all fucked up, blood pooling around their bodies. He rends your aunt apart infront of you, even the most powerful healing spell in the game can't help her. That spell does fucking FINE on a kid that was ripped apart by a dragon. But this? No. Fuck your healing bullshit. I RENT YOUR FUCKING AUNT, AND I CAN REND THIS UNIVERSE.

Don't even remember the name of it anymore, but since it has been some 20-odd years I guess it's understandable.

If I recall correctly it was a first person perspective RPG/action like EOB, LOL, Stonekeep etc, but the one thing that stood out was the death of the player. If you failed the combat you got a gruesome closeup of your head, with even the trachea visible I think. I could put up with any other games that had scary moments, but that one...just nope.

Shit was intense and way darker than the stuff I was used to at that age, yet I found it compelling as hell despite being spooked. Also, at the same party, I played the Japanese version of Actraiser on his Super Famicom while all the other kids were outside. These levels man. I literally couldn't play them and walked out while tasking my friend with beating it - and I was like 10 at the time and played quite a bit of Resident Evil and Parasite Eve and other survival/action horror. Nothing quite unsettled and outright scared me as these fucking levels in Gex 3, though. La Abadia del Crimen, it's a spanish game based in the name of the rose book for the Amstrad CPC which was also ported to other systems of the time. It's regarded as one of the best (if not the best) spanish game from the 8-bit age, but it's only known in Spain because of the language barrier. Never had these games growing up, but they still scare the piss out of me.

Waxworks. Fucking Waxworks. So many ways to die, so much fucking detail in every death. You get stabbed? Oh a gory representation of your limbs being pried off.You look in water? Hows about an animation of an alligator jumping up and dragging you under? Fuck that shit.

Resident Evil 2. Haven't play any other ones, and haven't given this a fair chance either. Saw the introduction, that fucking face showed up. Noped the fuck out of there.

The most recent? Clock Tower on the Playstation. It created such an atmosphere, such a fucking atmosphere. No music, just the drone of older computers in the office. Just the footsteps. Just the door. And it didn't fucking help that the game was so predictable. At least, right before you knew it had to inevitably happen. "Could you turn out the lights?" FUCK NO. NO DONT ANSWER THE FUCKING DOOR. STOP KNOCKING NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I really hate that they gave away the enemy on the fucking cover though.

When I was a kid though, no games were detailed enough to really be scary, and I thank the world for that. But on the other hand, my family forced me to watch horror movies which I don't think is any better.

I remember playing Silent Hill 1 and not being scared. I thought the game was freaking cool, especially how they took the PS1 graphics and made it actually spooky. It's literally a piece of art in its own right.

However, there was one part that always scared me.

About 3/4 through the game, you're running around in the streets while it's in nightmare mode and everything is dark and black. You turn around running and a bunch of random monsters starts chasing you. When you're running away you're suddenly greeted by two or three giant rat-like mole people coming at you which you've never seen before.

And then the music starts...

When I was around 5 (maybe younger), I was watching my brothers play this game. It was cool, I was really into it. Then that bitch in the rose garden yells at you about getting near her roses. This scared the ever living shit out of me for no reason whatsoever. I hid in a closet and cried. After this, they would play the scene or yell "King's Quest roses!" whenever I pissed them off.

Looking back, that whole thing is fucking hilarious.

I loved Parasite Eve as a kid, those mutations man.

I replay it every Christmas. One year my cousin was over and she wanted to play with my PS, she's 8 or 9 at the time but usually pretty good about not wrecking shit so I let her have a go of the thing while I did other stuff.

She picks up PE1 cuz it has Aya on the cover and she wants to play as a girl character and however many minutes later I hear her screaming her lungs out and she comes FLYING INTO THE KITCHEN and behind her mom.

We all go into the room to see what the shit right and the rat mutation freaked her out that much.

You know looking back there where a lot of female protagonists in horror games back in the day, I miss that. Ive always been of the mind that it actually works better with a lady hero, usually anyways I mean it does really come down to execution

It's a remake of a PC-98 game and it's really hard to compare it to anything else because nothing is really quite like it. It was basically a mixture of proto-genres at the time like FPS, survival horror, adventure games, and action RPG, with an enormous emphasis on plot. It takes place with a research and rescue team being sent to investigate the mysterious events that lead to loss of communications on a moon base named Hamlet and, well... you can imagine how that works out if you've watched Aliens. But it makes a new story for itself and even has anime cutscenes and voice acting to go along with it (I think).

The horror atmosphere is definitely the driving force but the gameplay does match it. Technically it's not high-tier from what I remember being a PS1 launch title by a small developer, but it's entirely playable without a guide and has a competent sense of balance that emphasizes survival to the point where you'll be genuinely worried about your resources every second of the game. It's easy to die just from being poorly equipped and not having the ammunition or equipment needed to get through some of the tougher sections. This adds a lot to the overall vibe though since you'll be using every single thing you pick up and barely making it out of some of the dreadful encounters. I say it's recommended at least for a try but I think the plot is engaging to the point where it will carry you through even the most sloggish parts of the experience and all the way to the bitter conclusion.

I watched a lot of the DC version on YouTube, it looks great but unfortunately, yeah, there is no English version for it and so I feel much of the appeal of the game will be lost without understanding Japanese. It does look much better and more importantly looks like it plays a lot better too due to a better control scheme with analog and a higher frame rate, but the reduced fidelity and coarseness of the PS1 title has its own sort of appeal by providing surrealism in my opinion.
