The damn thing probably still works. The 2600 is a single circuit board with a bunch of switches and a cartridge slot on top. Anything short of snapping the fucker in half won't kill it.

About 14 years ago we bought an old japanese CD runner, not sure what to call it because it could run games as well as media. It had a CD with 150 or 300 retro 2D games, most of witch are iterated within the list but different number order. Anyway, I just wanted to know if anyone knows what this device is.

>> No.1674394

Retro-styled games are generally made with Gamemaker or C++. Retro games were generally programmed in assembly which significantly reduces filesize overhead, among other things.

Some obvious ones:
1a. Statically linking tons of library code to work with some modern OS
1b. Using a language or OS which necessitates a massive amount of support code
2. Storing graphics as 24/32bpp truecolor instead of 2bpp or 4bpp paletted tiles
3. Storing music tracks in full rather than as tracks for a synth/sampler
4. Storing level data in full rather than using tables to look up common patterns
5. Not using compression on the finalized data (many Sega games use a LZ variant, for example)

A lot better than Alaskan gaming stores (Boscos in particular). They want $30 for Super Mario 3 and $35 for Super Metroid. $100 for their Super Nintendo.

Pawn Shops actually sell NES/SNES games at a decent price around here.

Does anybody else remember back in maybe 2002-2004 when earthbound was sitting at 180$ for a CIB mint copy and people were selling the "guide" for 12.99$ on eBay but in the description it was "The best part about this guide is that I will email it to you and you can keep it on your computer, it is not a physical guide but a copy that is written down" like what the fuck, it's worse than those stupid "Magnets" that are all over eBay and look like CIB games for cheap >:()

too inefficient. there's no actual limit for the filesize for the most part so why be compact and coded well when it can be big and cheaply developed?

>> No.1675865

>"Condition - Like New"
>"Disc/Cart only, no manual or artwork."
Yeah because I'm REAL fucking sure when the game was new it was cart/disc only too.

I suppose they operate on the same wavelength Gamestop does, in the notion to only the cartridge or disc itself matters in the end, but fuck is it annoying.

>> No.1675893

>in the notion to only the cartridge or disc itself matters in the end

Well, that's completely true for people that just like to play video games.

>> No.1675896

>>1675893
But as a condition identifier for an item, its a lie.

Would you call a book missing its back and front cover 'like new'? You can still /read/ it, sure.

>> No.1675905

>>1675893
I suppose so for most people that just want a working and clean cart or disc they can stuff in a binder or resell when they're done playing. That said, the "Like New" descriptor implies that the thing should logically be the entire package it came with (possibly minus the health and safety pamphlet) and is in "Like New" condition as well. And given how many incomplete games get tagged like that, it forces one looking for a used copy that's complete and in that condition to have to sift through a bunch of incomplete ones.

>>1675896
It makes me wish Amazon and various other sites would at least divide the used section into "complete" and "incomplete."
