Once again it is time for another Guardian Legend thread, my melanin-rich brethren.

How is it there was never a sequel, nor any copycat games? It's the perfect mix of shooter and adventure. It seems like it should've paved the way for a new hybrid genre but it just ended up being mostly ignored and forgotten.

fuck years, TGL was top tier NES game. The hardest part was oddly the green eye beast in the middle of the game, rather than anything that came after him.

I loved Optomon. If I ever make a shooting game I'll put somebody just like him in there.

>How is it there was never a sequel, nor any copycat games?
Because the holder of the IP has been bought and sold a dozen times since. At this point is debatable who even owns the IP. As for copycats >>1670279 nailed it.

>tfw you have waited a sequel or at least a spiritual sequel to the Guardian Legend for more than 20 years
>tfw you know your favorite game of all time will NEVER be ported, remade, republished or get any kind of sequel

Didn't care for TGL. A little too hard-as-nails for me, and the shooting stages just seemed to go on and on and on forever. I totally get why it has a cult following, however.

It was a neat concept, but it was executed in a less than perfect way. The balance between the two game modes is retarded. Even if you have free movement, you are actually more likely to die than if you were a space ship due to the awkward collision detection. This is an example of "a good game using ET collision detection".

>It's the perfect mix of shooter and adventure
I know this is basically blasphemy, but I thought both elements were wholly mediocre. There are much better action adventure games on the NES, and there are much better shmups, even from Compile themselves, on the NES. Combining the two genres the way it did also added very little, I thought.
I'd honestly say Blaster Master did a much better job of combining those genres with its somewhat Metroid-like side scrolling segments in Sophia the 3rd and its shooting segments on foot.

Is Guardic Gaiden the earliest example of mecha-musume? It's definitely the earliest one that I can think of, but I admit that the breadth of my pre-1990 knowledge is lacking.

There's a lot that could be done to improve the game, don't even pretend like it's perfect. Hand it over to the Meta Slug team and see what perfection may actually look like.

Just call them Irem. EX-Irem staffers. I love Metal Slug as much as the next guy, but they didn't do nearly as much good for SNK as they did during their time with Irem.
