Seriously, why mediocre 2D games like Rayman, Heart of Darkness and Disney's Hercules sold so well while the real 2D gems like Klonoa and Tomba didn't? That's why I say that Sonyfags have shitty taste on video games. And I'm not even trollbaiting: I have grew up with PS1 and it's one of my favourite consoles (expecially since some of my Top10 favourite games are for PS1 like Rival Schools and Grandia 1).

Because you saw those on every cybercafe, doens't mean they sold well.

I don't know what you're getting at, but Sony of America famously had a strict No 2D Allowed policy at the time. I think they still do, in fact.

Heart of Darkness didn't sell well.
and Klonoa has always had shit marketing outside of japan.
They've got the guy who practically invented cinematic gaming working on this series, yet I've never seen a trailer for the games anywhere.
A single commercial for Klonoa 2 using this music would have made all the difference.

The thing about klonoa though, it had 2 great games on major home consoles, 2 good puzzle platforms on gba and a bunch of mediocre spinoffs nobody cared about.
I know fans are dying for a sequel, but the character had a great run. And besides I don't think he fits in with modern gaming at all, the Wii remake had shit voice acting and cutscenes.
You know, better quit while you're still at the top?

Klonoa for Wii was a great remake and much better than the original (I grew up with the original and played the remake as well). The english voices were crap but you had the option for the fictional language of the original.

KLONOA APPRECIATION THREAD

The GBA RPGs are any good?

>> No.1669041

>>1669034
I never played it, I heard they planned out to remake the sequel on Wii too.
I don't know, in my opinion these games still looked good and played the same, I thought the remake was unnecesary.

>> No.1669043

>>1669027
This. The last time a company tried to revive a niche 90s mascot platformer, we got that shitty Rocket Knight sequel.

>> No.1669045

It's a weird thing that Klonoa volley was not only produced for Playstation 1 (althought they made Klonoa 2 for PS2 prior that) but localized in Europe as well. And the english dub was surprisingly good for a kiddie game (at least it was much better than the annoying dub of Klonoa Wii remake where they try to make him sound so coooooool, like Sanic. Wrong choice, Bandai Namco.

Thing with Klonoa is that I don't think Namco ever really bothered marketing it that well out here. For fucks sake, they had an ad that made it sound like he was an STD.

Yeah, their lack of effort for things like Klonoa, Tales of Destiny, and Tales of Eternia/Destiny II in the west was pretty sad. Does surprise me how many Klonoa games were localized though, since (as a comparison) for a good while Tales releases got rather spotty out here due to poor sales stemming from poor marketing, with us missing about half the PS2 era ones.

Rayman wasn't mediocre, in fact it is a great franchise with at least 4 great games. (1, 2 great escape, origins, legends)

>> No.1670228

>>1668997
Rayman was probably the worst playstation game I ever played.

Extremely slow, floaty, garbage gameplay. It was a massive step backwards from the platformers a generation before.
Whoever thought that sprint needed to be a powerup about halfway through the game needs shooting.

Ok so the SNES and Genesis were the high point of 2D platformers and the PS1 was relatively shit for making them but the movespeed was like walking through cement and it didn't even look that much better than say Earthworm Jim on the Genesis, or any random Disney game from the 16bit machines.

I seriously don't understand why Rayman ever gets recommendations.

>> No.1670981

Why is Klonoa looking lustfully at the viewer?

Those games had better ad campaigns. The best Klonoa ever had when it came to ads was a free fish taco at a very specific taco place if you bought the game.

Seriously what the fuck were they thinking. And I think I still have that fish taco thing which is strange as well. I'm just thankful they didn't make him into a more "coolz" character. Guess enough people convinced Namco it was a bad idea.

>> No.1671050

>>1671043
Ad campaigns in the mid 90s were just really strange in general. It felt like everything tried to just gross you out instead of getting you interested in the game. Hell there was one I remember in Game Pro from like 97 where it was just some hand with shit like pizza sauce, calluses, scars, and scabs on it with little pieces of text telling you it's those but I sure as fuck don't remember the game they were marketing.

Just checked and yep the free fish taco is still in my case. Wouldn't have done me any good anyways since the closest one is in NY and I am in Boston. I guess it kind of makes since since the store is called "Wahoo's" but it's still a fucking weird promotion. I mean look at their idea for the redesign. It horrible.

Also, Klonoa and Tomba. I remember loving these games as a kid. Unfortunately, a tonne of my games went missing when we moved, including Klonoa. :(

I wish they'd used sprites for the remake. Higher Definition ones of course, but I didn't like the fact it used 3D character models

>> No.1671449

This. That game was on every single demo disc at the time, and it was mediocre.

>> No.1671453

>>1668997
As for me, I think Klonoa and Tomb are great games but the pixelated 2.5D was very unappealing to look at even back then, unlike Rayman which had great hand-drawn 2D and Heart of Darkness which had a pre-rendered style like Oddworld.

>>1670228
The levels before the sprint upgrade were designed with a slower movement speed in mind, and even then there are still areas with sliding like in Band Land which get pretty fast. I honestly doubt you even played this game any further than the first few levels.

*Tomba

>> No.1671547

>>1671453
It certainly tried to design around the slow speed early by having a greater focus on precision but I never found that enjoyable, it felt like a chore to play.

When they did up the speed with pushes and shoves from objects or sliding it never felt tight and responsive.

For me it just got the pacing and feel wrong for movement, had poor general combat outside boss fights and I remember it had very uneven difficulty undulating between tedious and frustrating.

I will admit to never having finished it. As soon as I bought Tomb Raider it was never touched again.

90's marketing in general was really out there. The general consensus was "let's present something completely unrelated to our product and have a tiny splotch in the corner stating our product. It's entertaining to look back at, some ideas being pretty creative and all, but it's a wonder how anything got sold back then.
