Hi guys.

I've always had a weird attraction with huge sprawling cities, especially when they are depicted at nighttime with flickering lights and so on, I think they have a really beautiful and unique atmosphere. For this reason I've always loved the atmosphere of the cyberpunk genre, although I can't stand the overly gritty and sci-fi plots and concepts that come with it.

I am looking for any and all retro games that give off this kind of atmosphere. SNATCHER is one of my favs, the art is absolutely beautiful. Any similar ones you know of would be greatly appreciated.

Shadowrun for the Genesis. It is overly gritty, but not that much sci-fi as it's balanced with regular fantasy. The plot is much more focused on fantasy lore than sci-fi grit, and it's not really story-centric either, it's more about the setting.

It lets you explore a huge flickerling city at nighttime (although you start in the slums). You also get access to a jungle later on, but the main focus is on the city.

Thanks for all your replies! I'm kind of looking for lesser known games, will definitely check out Omikron, but again would prefer sprite based games that take place in large cities with a focus on exploration. Some of my favourites are GTA, Deus Ex, Snatcher, BASS, Jet Set Radio, TWEWY (not retro), things like that would be great. Doesn't need to be cyberpunk, in fact would prefer it if it wasn't.

Most of what had to be said has already been said, Anachronox would be my first pick.

Other than that, a few oddities:

Star wars games with Nar Shaddaa (or Coruscant) in their playable level libraries. I'd give Jedi Outcast and Academy a try, but I think JK1 had some of that goodness too. KOTOR 2's Nar Shaddaa leaves stuff to be desired in this department, but it's alright.

A bit weird and defo not old-school, but Transistor looks like this a lot to me. It's messed up thanks to the Process taking place, but the overall atmosphere is very similar

Project Eden should have this atmosphere, but I ain't going to lie to you, it doesn't. Avoid it, pretty mediocre game anyways.

SHOGO: Mobile Armor Division has nighttime city levels and they are fantastic. The game is also clinically insane and hilarious, and the gameplay is great.

The Fifth Element (PC or PS1, they're identical) has one of the best of this. It looks ugly and has kind of a lackluster gameplay, but it's pretty good. Also hard as nails.

Stolen has some good present-day citiycapes, but meeeeeeeehhhhhhhh. The game is crap and you should avoid it, unless you want a game with a final boss "fight" where both of you are running around and pressing buttons on keyboards. Seriously, avoid it.

On a very minimal scale, Gemini Rue has it. VERY minimal scale though.

Curiously, the end of Peter Jackson's King Kong has an atmosphere like this. No, seriously. It's '30s art-deco New York at night, and you get to explore it and smash it up as Kong himself. Definitely satisfying, and the game's pretty bitchin' too.
Dead To Rights on the PS2. Mostly takes place at night, and with neon-filled, sometimes atmospherically lit alleys. Not modern, but a colorful noir-ish little thingy that I'd check out. Look for screenshots, it'll help.

If you can go by such heresy, Sleeping Dogs may not be old or sci-fi, but it has som neat neon-infested Blade Runner-ish citiscapes at night. Also a sight when it's raining.

Bloodnet has a vast a vast future metropolis to explore, but since you already had problems getting into the Snes/Genesis Shadowruns this would break your balls.
