Well, Mario Kart 8 is out now.

I figure now's about the right time to have a thread for the classic that started it all as well as the spectacular follow-up.

So much fun was had with Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64. Not just by me, but by so many others.

Enough chitchat, Mario Kart thread a go.

>tfw you realize that only 2 of the 8 Mario Kart games are /vr/
>tfw you realize that they are following a weird order by releasing Mario Kart 64 before Mario Kart 7 and 8.

>> No.1662179

64 was the shit when I was younger. I'd always do co-op with my Dad, and while it was tough as nails we'd generally try and get through it together, with me doing the racing part and him trying to keep everyone else away. We finally completed the Special Cup on 150cc on Christmas Eve of 2003, the night before I got Double Dash. So fucking worth it in the end.

That's beautiful. My dad never took to video games but I had hours upon hours of fun playing this game with my older brother and cousins.

Mario Kart 8 is the shhhhiiiit! So much fun.

Good, got that out of my system.

As far as /vr/ related Mario Karts are concerned, I find the SNES original almost unplayable; I get sick while the playing it. Grew up on and loved the crap out of 64. MK64 held up reasonably well, and still has the best battle mode.

The original SNES version is a classic but I understand what you mean, whenever I play Mario Cart with friends Its only the ones who use to play it get high places. Also the Vanilla Lake maps with those stupid little ice blocks piss me off.

In my eyes 64 is the best and will continue to be the best, even after playing the others I can't help but think that 64 had a perfect balance that the others have yet to replicate.
Though honestly I wish we could get SMK on WiiU with some online, I mean shit if we could do in on the original hardware 2 decades ago we should have it on the newer hardware as a standard

SNES: Cheated by giving CPU infinite feathers.
64: Cheated by giving CPU instant recovery.

Still loved them both anyhow. I wish I could get back home for a while to play them with my family. Maybe later this year.

Going back to it to AI rubber bands like mad, you can be using a Golden Mushroom and they'll still keep up with you. Not /vr/ but the DS version was perfect for me.

Speaking of I never did work out how mushrooms work in 64, as a kid or now. When they fire you back slightly can you spam it to go quick as or should you let it complete one boost then the next? Never worked out which was the best way

The rubberbanding never seemed that strong in 64

My favourites are Super Mario Kart and Double Dash.
Sometimes there are retro gaming nights in a local bar. I scored the second place in a Super Mario Kart tourney but I don't feel bad about it. The winner was amazing, he just rushed through Rainbow Road and being the second best Super Mario Kart player in my city isn't too bad, I guess.

Same thing here. I was pretty damn good at it as a kid, the game's hard as balls though. I could never finish the Special Cup at 150cc. So last month I thought to myself I should do it.

I started playing and 50cc was fairly easy, 100cc was okay until the Star Cup, then shit got real. The Special Cup has a huge difficulty spike. I kept practicing, I learned everything again, I literally sank in hours of training. Eventually I opened 150cc, beat Mushroom, Flower and Star, I'm now really good at it again. But I still can't beat Special Cup at 150cc. It's fucking insane.

Super Mario Kart is the only Mario Kart I've played that I like and I fukkin love it. One of my favorite games.

MK64 is p boring, the only things it has over the original is 4 player multiplayer and less shitty graphics. Most of my friends all grew up with the 64(I had a PS1) and so we'll play it occasionally when we're hanging out and I don't find it enjoyable or interesting unless we're racing in Moo Moo Farm with 3 players.

Me and another friend both agree that the battle mode in Super is by far the choicest Mario Kart multiplayer experience.

Maybe it's because I started with Mario Kart 64, but Super Mario Kart remains the only Mario Kart that I cannot beat on the highest speeds. Even MKWii eventually gave way to my persistence. I just continuously fuck up in SMK and get terrible positions, starting with even the flower cup.

>> No.1664892

>>1664318
Same, though I couldn't dream of having the patience to get good at it. SMK drains my tolerance like few games I've played. It's probably the only time that a Mario Kart game was more difficult than an F-Zero game on the same system.

>> No.1664907

What bothers me about SMK is that depending on who you choose, the CPUs always race in the exact same order. So you know if you pick Bowser, Mario will be on your ass 24/7, followed by Luigi, then Peach, and the rest.

Mario Kart 64 is the Bane of my existence. My friends from high school and I would play each other everyday when we'd hang out, and it's a ritual that lasted through college. We still play each other once in a while in Mario Kart 64, and it is rage inducing and usually results in shouting and arguing. I wouldn't have it any other way.

IIRC, you could break that order by royally fucking one of the ai over in the first event of each cup. IE if mario is one of the racers who's on your character's ass all the time, make him finish badly in the first event and the order will change, putting him towards the rear from then on.

Tried my housemates with Super and MK64. Both find the SNES one horrible to look at and difficult to handle, and one said it was "not at all fun". 64 they found a bit more tolerable up until the Special Cup tracks, which, to be fair, I feel are flawed.

>Yoshi Valley, while an interesting idea, is far too easy to get lost in, as well as spend a lap or two not knowing what you're doing
>Hands down, the most boring and flawed Rainbow Road

Why did they bring those back for 8? Are they fixed?

Also, that ONE FUCKING TURN in Royal Raceway, where you have to brake and adjust or decelerate carefully or you will veer a mile into the grass on your right or definitely end up in the river.

Anyway, I just want someone to play those two with who won't moan. ;_;

Weird thing is they're both total bros, love pretty much anything else we play together and are usually fairly retro minded. Hell, one has spent the last three days doing nothing but playing around with Driver 2's Film Director. Just good luck getting them to play a MK earlier than DD.

Super Mario Kart is one of my favorite games of all time. I even got my name in Nintendo Power for getting one of the fastest times on Mario Circuit 1.

64 Rainbow Road has much more going on, both in terms of track edits and in scenery. It takes the original and amps it up quite a bit. It also makes it a one-lap race, which some like and some dislike. Personally, I'd like it to be longer, I know it used to be really long but now it's too short for my tastes.

As for Yoshi Valley, it makes MUCH more sense now, despite being mostly the same layout. They made it larger, gave it greater spacing, and added signage as well as changing some sections to be more streamlined. It's pretty good, though I never disliked the first one.

>>1666569
I can't blame them. Mario Kart was still trying to find its sweet spot with the first four games. I agree that the mode 7 games are tough to deal with, but as one who grew up with MK64, I have no trouble playing that game.

>>1666606
Mario Kart Wii demands you stop on some tracks, unless you pick the right carts and practice a lot. It's probably the 2nd hardest Mario Kart, right behind Super. The shit that game pulls is unreal.
