Yah, nah.

>Only 6,000 copies were first produced for the game’s American launch in May 1998, and many retailers failed to meet pre-order demand. Sega released a second batch of 12,000 copies the following June and then another 12,000 in the late summer.

I agree; only because like most Saturn games it's become so highly praised by a small audience, and so few people have gotten to experience it, that absolutely nothing can live up to it. It's still a great series.

>> No.1660549

My biggest problem with the PD franchise is that is came too late for the 2D era, and too early for the 3D era. None of the games managed to replicate the beautiful style of the artwork all that well except Orta, which still looks good. A proper 2D spritework PD game on a 16 or 32 bit system could've looked gorgeous (though perhaps 2D wouldn't have captured the immersion of the game as well.)

There were a bunch and I mean A BUNCH of games that should have been localized for Western release but weren't and the evidence of PDS and SF3 seeing drastically insufficient press runs makes it clear that it wasn't an issue of translation. It was spite over Tom Kalinske's SoA doing so amazingly well with the Genesis. SoJ wouldn't develop for 32x either, even though Sega 32X + Sega CD was a fully realized next gen platform first to market.

CD32x was hell to develop for and most companies just didn't care for it as a platform. Plus the hardware was very unreliable.

If they released the Neptune as planned, and SoJ didn't decide kill everything but the Saturn, then it might have been different.

If Kalinske was left alone, he could've made the Saturn a success and at least keep the Genny alive for enough years to outsell the SNES.

All Moebius did was the first game's cover. They took influence from his work, of course.

I really like Panzer Dragoon Saga. It's not very challenging and I think the soundtrack's got more diminishing returns that others would argue (still love it), but the variety of areas you explore, meaningful side-quests you take, and generally great story progression all work well with what's a pretty good combat system. I'd certainly take this over most other JRPGs, anyway. Art design is amazing as always!
