Welcome to the Retro Game Gauntlet, gentlemen.

Continue from >>1600891

Start at NES, and work through in the following order:
NES
SNES
GB/GBC
Megadrive/Genesis
Turbografx16
DOS
NeoGeo
GBA
Commodore 64
Playstation 1

You have three days to complete the game without assistance (each game gets three days, though RPGs are allowed a week due to length).

Select your system here:
http://s3kr.it/gauntlet.html

You can also do it manually if you don't trust the random number generator:
http://s3kr.it/systems/

Rules:
1) Savestates are allowed ONLY for the purpose of taking screenshots and ONLY if your emulator/game in question does not have a pause function.
2) Rerolls are allowed under the following conditions:
-The game you get requires some sort of hardware functionality that cannot be accurately emulated to complete (eg, Boktai)
-The game would otherwise require cheats, hacks, or alteration of the software to complete due to a bug (eg, Cheetahmen II)
For games that have a high score or no end, the rule is
>if no high score has been established, set a goal and beat it
>if you.re playing something another anon already has a high score on, beat their high score
>if you are playing extended rpgs/pokemon/whatever you get a week (Depending on the game: needs to be asked in thread)

AND BRING ME SCREENSHOTS PARKER

IRC channel: #gauntlet on irc.rizon.net (Mibbit link on site)

NEW RULES/GUIDELINES TO POSTING IN THE GAUNTLET THREADS:

-Do not post screenshots every other screen, make them few and meaningful
-Do not start a new thread before current one bump limit is exceeded

Oh hey, new gauntlet thread! The last one did pretty darn well, hoping it'll keep going.

Managed to finish my NES game tonight, Bonk's Adventure. Was a decent game, I'm sure the TG16 game is better but this game looked nice and have some nice sound/music design. Just wish it had slightly better controls; there's a bit of momentum to movement, and it just doesn't feel right to me.

So, onto SNES. Not much time to play tonight, but I'll pick it.

>Your game is "Rap Jam: Volume One"! Now go play it

Oh great, that sounds VERY exciting. Guess it's a crappy beat 'em up or fighting game.

Not as bad as I expected. A very comfy and simple little game. Your objective is to water all the flowers on the level to progress, and you are armed with a hammer you can use to control the direction of moving platforms and to stun enemies as they try to get you while watering each flower pot takes a few seconds. There's not much variety to the levels, but it just doesn't have enough time to become tedious: the game only has 18 stages and you can beat each in like a minute. Very relaxing.

>SNES
>The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang
Um...this is an RPG right? Might have to shelve it for a while in any case. Do I have to beat the game from the moment I roll, or the moment I start it?

I got it on my last gauntlet and couldn't defeat it, even in a week (it's arguably an extended rpg). It's a translated rom, and there are a lot of shitty translations that make no sense. The game is pretty similar to Castlevania 2, so all the information from NPCs is crucial to beat the game.

Hey all, I've' been gone for a bit and I'd like to give an update.

I did indeed try playing Rap Jam: Volume One. Not a beat 'em up or fighting game, but it was my third though: a basketball game featuring rap stars. It was awful: it was hard to see things, the frame rate was awful, and you can't even select other players to control on your team (3v3). I just...couldn't stand trying to do its championship mode.

So I let it slip through the 3-day period, and before going to bed I picked a new NES game: Dr. Chaos. I've seen this game before, and it's...interesting. I'm not saying it's good, but having a sidescroller and first-person adventure combined is something I've only seen in one other game - Goonies 2. Except that did it a lot better.

Pictured is the first boss, which is pathetic. It went down in about 5 slashes from my knife. I picked up a device that blinks in the 1st person mode when I'm facing the right way in the right room to find the portal to a (not necessarily next) level, as well as the first part of a gun I'm supposed to be assembling (seen in the right part of the hud).

I'll probably put up a few more pics to show a bit how this game works.

Today I finished Mega Man 3. As expected, a few of the Wily robots were pretty tough. Rush Jet was a godsend with the Wood Man clone.
By the end, however, the game got too easy. The fortress levels just throw e-tanks at you like there's no tomorrow, and the bosses aren't hard enough to need them all.
Also, Dr. Light was really hyping up the final boss, essentially saying it's like the nuclear bomb or something, when it's first phase is basically just a regular enemy! You can just stand still and the thing won't hit you. The second phase is a bit trickier, but still, you'd probably have at least 8 e-tanks anyway.

Alright, still working on Dr. Chaos and going strong. Have 6 of the parts of the gun you need (5 shown in the screenshots), and have also got a diving helmet (can go underwater without losing health) and jump boots (can jump almost the height of the whole screen). The latter has been REALLY useful with these large batlike enemies that only drop down to the bottom of the screen once in a while. Also got a few e-tanks, which is helpful in getting through things but tedious to pick up health for. But honestly, this game isn't terrible. Not great, but not terrible. Definitely know I'm going to finish.

Pictured is the 1st person exploration mode where you get to stock up on items and find the warps to the levels. This is entering my 6th level.

OK I HAD IT

I tried and my lord this is tough. You need firepower but you have to collect humans with your submarine that has 60 seconds to live (unless you grab a powerup) and if you shoot crabs you can get gold to bring to the surface but the gold turns back to a crab in under a second which REALLY pisses me off and it kills me half the time because im in a rush to get fuel so my submarine dosent crash but even then enemies are too quick to react too sometimes and you die die and die some more.

I am NOT playing this game ever again, its pure rage fuel

And I did it. The final boss was pathetic, some form of lion that shot fireballs out of its mouth that do a lot of damage, but it's easy to finish the boss off before you're in danger of dying. So yay, 2nd NES attempt in the last couple of threads completed! It was pretty decent for a Pony Canyon game, most of their stuff was pretty darn awful, but this had a bit of charm.

So, time to select an SNES game. Hopefully something I'll try bothering to play.

Mission Abort! Return to base! Serously, I've been playing Jungle Strike for the SNES, and I'm wondering how am I supposed to do flawless timing and aiming in a jet plane that I can barely control? This thing moves so fast you hardly have enough time to see whats in front of you to avoid crashing into it, let alone shoot it. Think I'll just go back to the NES. It's too late to finish this in three days.

The game up to this point has been decent enough. Most of it involves flying around your Comanche helicopter and doing missions, usually of the "blow stuff up" or " search and rescue" variety. Do all the missions in the level, and you can progress to the next one. Each level that I did get to see had a unique touch to it, enriching the experience. Not much music, though.

You are equipped with a chaingun, Hydra rockets, and Hellfire missiles. You have a depleting supply of fuel. Scattered throughout the level are items that will replenish your stock, but they are limited resources, so you have to do some planning.

When your armor is depleted to zero or you run out of fuel, you crash and lose a life, starting right back up where you lost your life. Failing a mission results in you having to go back to base and start all missions in the level over again. In fact, nearly everything is started over. Everything is restored to when you started the level, only you start with the amount of lives you had when you failed the previously mentioned mission. So, failing a mission is a bigger penalty then getting a game over. At least with me, game overs happened much more frequently. Also, there are a couple parts of the game that require unusual solutions, such as shooting something you would not expect to have to shoot to get some game mechanic to work.

Also, this isn't the worst NES game I've ever played. It may have weak controls, but it has okay graphics even for a '91 title, and it's playable. Also, the animals don't take too long to actually round up, so that's a plus.

I don't think I'm going to be able to finish this in time. It's not impossible to play and I'm guessing it can easily be completed with enough dedication but it's got problems out the bunghole.

The levels are absurdly long, the layouts make no sense and they're not fun to play through. Combat is a chore, even with the aiming reticule trying to line up a shot is cumbersome. The visuals are cluttered as hell, important switches and keycards blend into the surroundings. The majority of your tacti-cool moves like sidestep, roll and even running are useless. Grid based movement in a real time action game is just a horrendously poor design choice. I expected much better from Origin but this is not something I can recommend. However, I will finish it one day for completion sake and also because I dropped ten bucks on both games on GoG.

Time for a few days break and then back to NES I go.

My buddy bought the game and we played it for the first time last week. I agree that it's hard to get used to the controls, and the levels are absurdly long, but I still find myself enjoying the game. I wish I had a full-sized keyboard so I could try all the input systems they designed, but I manage well enough with just arrows and ctrl-alt-shift.

I have no idea if I can ever beat level 2 though. We started it after the 4 hours it took to clear level 1, and could barely make any progress. Good luck to you on your quest to beat it.

So apparently I got the bad ending for whatever reason but this game is over.

I'm not a fan of brawlers but this did its job. Whatever story it was trying to tell was all over the place, the AI is far too easy to trick and the game is way too generous with its health pickups but the controls are responsive, the music is alright, visuals are nice and crisp and I will give it points for having a block button that actually works in this type of game. Uh, okay.

There's no real goal to this, just races and score attack. There's one course per event to unlock but they don't look different from each other and besides that there's nothing else, no high score table or additional characters or boards to work towards. Despite having stats, the characters all handle the same and since you're against an rubberbanding AI most of the time the stats mean even less. The controls are sloppy, the music is bad and the visuals are, well...

This is what it looks like. The 3D effect is done with fake scaling sprites but the actual distance between you and an obstacle seems to be randomized. Doing tricks isn't easy since you'll still fall off your board even though the shadow underneath your character indicates that you're still way up in the air.

Terrible game.

And it's a light puzzle game from Infogrames. I can't get away from these fuckers today.

The goal is to step on all of the safe floor tiles, turning them pink and then warping you to the next level. It's like Q-Bert and Dimo's Quest had a portable kid. This should be fun.

And thus ends a rather mediocre adventure. At least the little furball manages to get his freak on.

There no real puzzles here, just step on all the floor tiles and avoid the enemies. Pretty simple except for a few levels which rely on two certain enemy mechanics, being the ability to destroy blocks and place new floor tiles in the empty void, and getting frustrated that they never work. All but one enemy will wander around aimlessly so you cannot get them to move towards you to build a bridge or remove a wall, leaving you stuck in place until the timer runs out. The levels also don't reset when you die, which can either be great or a nightmare depending on how fucked up thing are. Thankfully the game will spawn random bonuses which improve your firepower or, as shown in the image, spawn a green door that will instantly end the level.

The controls are nice and responsive, collision detection is somewhat off resulting in you getting hit without touching anything, music is toe-tapping and easy to listen to for hours on end (thank fuck), the visuals are easily readable but nothing special and put a bit of strain on your eyes after a while. Overall, it's a pretty poor game that offers no challenge or returning interest.

This is also available on other platforms under the name of Skweek. I wouldn't bother with it there either.

Polite sage because of talking about meta.

If you ask me, take out GBA and add in something like Virtual Boy, Win98, or MAME before the cutoff date. It's not like we're at a shortage of consoles or anything.

You could even throw in a popular (possibly optional) ROMhack/translation category for all platforms at the end of the gauntlet to replace GBA. For fun!

I'm rather enjoying this. It's as simple as can be but also has a fair bit of challenge to it.

I don't think this would count as an RPG though. There doesn't appear to be any stats to manage, equipment follows a linear progression, there's nothing I've found to spend gold on and the only thing you need to keep an eye on is your food which can kill you if you have too much.

But yeah, it's pretty neat so far.

That's it. And I don't like it.

No matter what equipment you have, the combat system just flips a coin regarding whether or not you actually land a blow and frequently results in your death. Enemies can be easily kited around until your health regenerates, including the final boss, which trivializes most encounters. The Medusa has the ability to reduce your total HP without any way of getting it back, which can leave you royally fucked if you run into two of them in a room. Most wizards have a confuse spell that lasts forever and makes you wander around aimlessly getting buttfucked left and right. Items come in various colors but their uses are randomized, so a blue potion may kill you when in a previous playthrough it healed you. Spending too long on a floor will resurrect all the enemies making going back for that vital piece of food (that can kill you) frustrating instead of challenging. The music is also grating as fuck.

There's no save function but dying gives you the option to continue, placing you on your last visited multiple of fifth floor I think. I did have to use a savestate to keep my progress overnight because of this.

Interesting at first but outstays its welcome with bad gameplay mechanics. Would not recommended.

And done. This was harder than I anticipated.

What's to say? It's pool. There's 6 variants, 14 challengers, a "story" mode, a coaching system and some setups to practice your trickshots with. The visuals are nicely done and the music is pretty chill, but the ball physics are stiff and you can make them freak out and spin for ages with the right shot. The controls are also less than friendly, requiring you to navigate three menus just to set up a shot which makes the long matches even longer as you swap back and forth to get things just right.

Overall, it's not bad, it does the job. However, there are much better alternatives out there, so if you're in the mood then just get Virtual Pool instead.

Let's see what horrors DOS has for me this time.

Ooh, I remember that game. It was cute and fun at the same time.

I recall someone tried computing the speed the penguin runs at, and turned out that he is running at something like Mach 30.

Ok first big complaint is that everything takes a giant chunk of your health and you move slow as balls

This game was really weird at first I hated it, and then it grew on me. I got stuck on stage 9 and was beginning to think that the last level just looped infinitely, but I had to look up an exact path to take or else I couldn't progress.
You get so many points from later bosses that a few times I was up to over 50 lives, I went from 50+ lives to game over plenty of times though. time for the next game.

Nope. im done. I have played this game for no more than five minutes and im done.

Slow movement, slow shooting even with turbo, everything munches your health bar about 1/3 except the powerdowns, and it isnt fun.

NEXT GAME COMING UP

Back to it.
This boss is just three rotating platforms that you have to shoot a bunch and not fall off of.
It's a pain in the butt.
