Let's have a retro puzzle game thread.

For the most part I've played Tetris, Panel de Pon, and the Puyo Puyo series. Anyone have any suggestions for solid puzzle games that are also worth a look?

>> No.1651438

Columns.

Best puzzle game ever.

>> No.1651447

>>1651438
I completely forgot about Columns and I even own that game on Game Gear.

Time to go play it.

>> No.1651474

I play obscure puzzle games obsessively (planning to start a review channel soon as nobody else seems to have one) — here are a few I recommend.

Pikiinya! (Super Famicom)
Money Puzzle Exchanger (arcade, PSX) or Ryougae Puzzle Moujiya (Saturn); they're the same idea but the former's Magical Drop–style while the latter's standard falling block–style.
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo (all sorts) and the related Baku Baku Animal (arcade, Saturn)
Also, barely not retro, but Guru Logi Champ (GBA) is a really good portable puzzle game with some unique ideas.

>> No.1651478

>>1651474

Also just found out that Guru Logi Champ was apparently rereleased recently as Snapdots for DSiWare, even outside of Japan.

>> No.1653430

Assuming you don't just mean the falling block style games, Sutte Hakkun for SFC is good and it gets devilishly difficult.

>> No.1653463

>>1651432

Wario's Woods

Pretty unique gameplay as you walk around with Toad picking up things but once you got used to it its awesome.

Puzzle bobble man. Addictive as fuck. Major Tetris effect afterwards though.

What's with the speed in that game? It starts moving ridiculously fast way too soon.
tapping on the D-pad just a little bit sends the pieces flying to one wall or the other.

>> No.1653628

>>1653562
Couldn't find a download of this anywhere, so I caved and bought it on PSN

So glad I did.

How I Puyo Pop

Oh well, Tetris Attack is my game anyway.

>> No.1653640

>>1653562

Looks fun. Do you need to use any of the other menu options or just the top one?

>> No.1653671

>>1653640
you might want to try the second one, "action," some time. it's kind of like a rush mode where you have to eliminate falling blocks, following the basic rules of story mode. it gets faster as you go until it hits a point where the speed resets, then begins to climb again
i think the third option is a type of vs mode, but i've never had another person to play with
the fourth option toggles the grid and labeling of the blocks, i think. you probably won't need to worry about it
last option changes the music: vocal, instrumental, or nothing. you can also change this during gameplay, i believe

also, for story mode, the option at the top is to view the opening sequence again, the one just above the save option is for the ending

>> No.1653674

Ah no one has mentioned Sakura taisen columns for the dreamcast and sega saturn. Its basically a columns game but with interesting multiplayer mechanics. It's also very cheap and easy to acquire. I highly recommend it even if you dont like Sakura Wars.

Tetris Attack is still my favourite puzzle game.
One of my friends gets all bitchy about it though, and only ever wants to play the Pokemone Puzzle League clone of it. I don't mind, but something about it just doesn't feel quite as good as Tetris Attack.

>> No.1653689

>>1651474
My favorites are Panel De Pon and Puzzle Fighter. After playing Puzzle Fighter obsessively for years, Baku Baku has some nuances that keep throwing me off. I keep trying to make squares even though there's no benefit, and I keep forgetting that "crash gems" (animal blocks) don't activate when touching other animal blocks.

>> No.1653696

>>1653630
I don't mind classic Puyo / Mean Bean Machine, but the newer Puyo Pop games introduce 3-4 square sized blocks which I sometimes have a hard time with

>> No.1654041

You also can't defend against incoming attacks, unlike in Puzzle Fighter. It's a much more casual game, that's for sure. I still enjoy it, though.

>> No.1654043

>>1653782

Yoshi is surprisingly fun, as is Moai-kun (Famicom only). I also really like Fire 'n Ice, the sequel to Solomon's Key, which I really don't like.

It's not a rising screen puzzle game but you definitely need to check out Mario's Picross and the JP only Mario's Super Picross for the Super Famicom.
Shit's great.

i used to love a sailor moon game for the snes (after googling it's "Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Super S - Fuwa Fuwa Panic")
pretty cool, it was battle style, and oh how i raged at sailor uranus...

I was amazed to see how much this cart is worth when I looked up my old games. Easily the highest priced. And yeah, it's pretty enjoyable and gets pretty challenging.

>>1656314
>Lode Runner
Lode Runner was the shit. I'd spend an entire afternoon building a custom level and then make my siblings or parents play it until they beat it. The fake blocks were the worst.

Also, pic related.

>> No.1659086

You know, considering that Tetris Attack was Yoshi's Island themed outside Japan, why the fuck does the box art not have at least a single picture of Yoshi?

I mean look at it. You would never know just by looking at it that the whole game is yoshis. Hell, you would probably think it's just some random tetris game.

I remember loving it because I would think of completely different things while playing it and still get really far.

Fuck man. Those days. Being depressed and thinking about my family while watching columns of jewels fall and disappear. Tetris doesn't have the same effect on me somehow.

Motherfucking Wario's Woods son. Always been my favourite puzzle game. I think a big part of the appeal has to do with the fantastic music:
