1643412 No.1643412[DELETED]  [Reply] [Original]

Going to replay Chrono Trigger, and am wondering what is the best way to do so?

My first encounter was with the attrocious PS1 version, and I still have nightmares about the loading screens. Between emulating the SNES version, and playing the DS version with the *extras*, what is the best method?

Also as an aside, why do so many Trigger fans have such a disdain for Chrono Cross? I read a lot of people dislike the new ending to Trigger that legitimizes Cross, and...this baffles me. Cross was a fantastic game that is right on par, and in my opinion, surpasses Trigger in almost every regard, soundtrack included.

Was it because DBZ man didn't lend his art?

DS version is the best version, but ignore the optional content. It's absolute trash. Especially the whole up the mountain down the mountain up the mountain down the mountain bullshit.

DS version is best if you want to play it on a real console. I can't recall any particularly compelling content but I think it had a turbo button and a better translation?

I'd say SNES for being on a larger screen and without all the lousy extra content, plus I prefer Woolsey's translation over the more faithful one.

It's all up to preference though. The DS version is a fine port and works the exact same performance-wise.

Cross' story is convulted and it's very unclear at the begining. Also combat system is very unorthodox.

>> No.1643531

DS version is just the SNES version with some extra content that really doesn't add anything.

Just emulate the SNES version.

Square really handled the DS version really poorly. They completely remake FF3 and FF4, and then they just do a lazy port for Chrono Trigger, charge $40 for it, and then when it obviously sold like shit, they shot down any potential sequel saying "lol guess no one likes chrono trigger anymore".

Also, it makes Chrono Cross canon, which is a shit garbage game that takes a massive steaming dump on Chrono Trigger and is an absolute embarassment. The music is good though. Fortunately, Yasunori Mitsuda is brilliant regardless of how retarded the developers are.

Chrono Cross plays almost entirely differently than Chrono Trigger and features a completely different story almost completely divorced from the original game. How do you not see why people wouldn't like it? Not to mention it's one big snooze-fest.

I actually kind of liked that idea, it's just that it takes forever to get to the cool character designs. This, pretty much.

I was unfortunate to not look into it before playing it and didn't want to stop before I started, but you can get up and down the damn thing (for useless equipment) without triggering any battles anyway. It was a waste of time, completely unnecessary and adds nothing.

I don't know who thought it was a good idea at all.

>Was it because DBZ man didn't lend his art?
DBZ is shit. It's a hypermasculine soap opera for little boys. Toriyama's character design is primitive with every man, woman and child looking like a roid-raging caveman with crossed eyes, ballooned foreheads and the absolute most retarded fucking hair styles on the planet.

Yet Chrono Trigger was a great game and why you people continue to lump CT fans in with DBZ fans is beyond me. It's not a piece of shit like Snatcher that dwelled in rightful obscurity until its creator became famous for something else. CT was considered a great game long before Toonami and Pokemon churned out a generation of weebs. The claim that CT's and DBZ's successes are in anyway related is a pretty good indicator that you're underage and/or new to retro gaming.

Dragon Ball was popular world-wide except in the USA by the 90s when Chrono Trigger came out (which is why I find it extremely weird Square never released it on Europe, would have been a HUGE hit).

Also, Dragon Ball is not just DBZ, americans only got to know the heavily edited and censored DBZ.

It's funny then that Dragonball Kai cuts out a huge amount of episodes and heavily edits fights to make them shorter, and is much better than DBZ.

Kai was a huge missed chance. It was supposed to make it have a more similar pace to the manga, but there's still filler shit in it, and not even the good kind of filler.
The editing was lazily done, they changed the background music (for the worst), and their attempt at digitally remastering scenes also failed.

The original DBZ had a lot of flaws, but yeah it's better than Kai. A shame really.

Anyway, manga is the best way to experience Dragon Ball, no question.

>> No.1643795

>>1643763
If nothing else Kai is nice to have if only because it allowed FUNimation to give the show its first good English dub (Not counting the awesome Pioneer dub of the first 3 Z movies from the late 90s, anyway), it's just too little too late anymore, since I stopped watching it in English years ago. Chris Ayres is such a good Freeza, though.

Only the midgame optional quest area is bad. Lost Sanctum it's called, I think.

The postgame dungeon bonus content is worthy of being in the game and offers a somewhat more challenging end. The new endgame equipment also improves weak characters, like Master's Crown actually giving you a reason to use Marle instead of Haste Helms, and other characters like Lucca getting even more unique equipment. And the translation is much better. If you have a dual-monitor setup there's no reason not to emulate the DS version instead of the SNES one, but if you don't then you at least have the fullscreen argument as the only reason to play that.

The DS version is the best. The only new content that sucks is the Lost Sanctum, the rest is actually pretty good. I like the monster fights and they can get you really good items really early. The Dimensional Vortex stuff is good, on par with the rest of the game.

People who complain about it making Cross canon are right, but it's not a bad thing (I happen to like Cross, although it does have some glaring flaws) except where Dalton is involved. The new Superboss fight is fun.

Play it, I say.

Whether intentional or not, that was an outstanding comparision.

Fallout 3 was the more successful title that pleased the simple folk, hordes of fanboys will forever sing the praise of its quality, and will always omit any sort of healthy criticism (just like Chrono Trigger)

New Vegas (and Chrono Cross) on the other hand was the smarter title intended for a smarter, older audience. Those with a modicum of taste and intelligence appreciate it, while the unwashed masses despise it for not being a direct sequel.

Cross wasn't Chrono Trigger 2 so people hated it.

It's more a story focusing on the indirect consequences of time travel rather than a sequel based the characters of the last story, which i thought was a cool idea so I enjoyed it.

PS1 version has minimal extra content and best quality cutscenes, the original script, but has horrible load times.
SNES version has the original script but has no load times and no cut scenes.
DS version has worst graphics, has cutscenes (though lower quality), extra content that's mostly pointless, and fucks with the script a bunch

Verdict: Play the SNES version. If you must see the cutscenes play the PS1 version or watch them on Youtube.

You know, I always recommend the Chrono Trigger Retranslation under certain circumstances. If you're replaying the game, and find that it's too familiar and you remember the story really well, then and pretty much only then do I recommend going the retranslation route.

Reason being is the retranslation is an extremely literal translation of Chrono Trigger into English. They make all sorts of disclaimers about how it's not really intended to be a localization or replacement for the official versions, but is more just a curiosity thing to see what the original text was. They pretty much just translated everything word-for-word so that it is as accurate to the Japanese as possible. This leads to the occasional engrish or weird wording, but it definitely gives an interesting perspective into some of the stuff that the official translations - and other fan translations - kind of gloss over or alter slightly. The translation itself is also really accurate, and the next best thing to playing in Japanese if you're curious about what Japanese Chrono Trigger is like.
