“Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.” - Dr. Seuss

Come, children of /vr/, and let us celebrate the Sonic games of old.

To be honest, I have never fully completed an original Sonic game, Ive only done it through cheat codes. I am a completionist and I always fail at collecting all of the chaos emeralds, so I usually rage-quit. So ive decided that after years of playing these games, I need to sit down and beat them for once.

Really?

I mean sonic 2 is challenging with those goddamn bombs on the half-pipe but Sonic 1 and Sonic 3 are easy as shit.

I wish I played Sonic CD when I was younger. By the time that came out I kind of drifted away from gaming and didn't get back into it till the ps1 came out so it completely passed me by.

I really want to get a night where I just chill out with a joint and a few beers and just play through all the 'good' sonic games.

I always loved Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, but could never get into the first Sonic games. Turns out I just don't like Sonic core gameplay at all, I just happened to like those two because they were a little more about platforming and less going fest.

Colors is a decent game but it has really awful blocky platforming that makes it feels less like a sonic game.

Unleasehd Daytime is fun but really unpolished.

Generations is easily the best 3D sonic by a large margin and does alot of things right and is really polished for a 3D sonic game. The physic sand level design for Classic Sonic could be better though.

Colors and Generations are the only 3D sonics a person should really play considering the others are unpolished mediocre trash.

Adventure 1 and 2 has some charming aspects about it at least

>> No.1639436

SA1&2 are fun if you keep the time period in mind and don't think about it too much.
Unleashed's daytime stages were slippery and the controls were weird, but the concept was good.
Colours was weird... it was pretty fun, but not for the reasons you'd play a Sonic game.
Generations polished Unleashed's gameplay and threw in some almost-classic stuff as a bonus.

Did anyone else LOVE Sonic Jam for Saturn?
I know it was only a compilation, but I adored it on the Saturn, even though I had the games on Mega Drive.

It was just such a well put together title, all the originals with Lock-On compatibility. Different difficulty modes (which eliminated the barrell obstacle in Carnival Night Zone for one thing), packed solid with art to unlock, videos to watch and that wonderful Sonic World 3D bonus section with little challenges to do.

I played so much of this game, very fond memories.

Yeah, it's the best Sonic compilation even if it only includes 4 games, and also they're actual ports, not emulation. The only problem it has is some slowdowns on Sonic 2, but on the other hand it has some new options like spindash in Sonic 1 (optional) and Time Attack mode ala Sonic CD in all games, which is sweet.

And yeah the Sonic World hubworld and minigames and all the extra content is probably what makes that compilation so great. It's like Sonic Team saying "sorry guys, we couldn't bring a proper Sonic game on the Saturn, but have this".

I had Sonic 1 first, so I always got used to just hitting down and rolling if I needed to. I remember the Sonic 2 box or manual saying that Sonic has this rad new attack, but by that point I was so used to Sonic 1 that I never used it. Both games felt built around accommodating this (besides a few segments, like the elevators where you HAD to spin dash). Generations completely fucked this up for me.

Also I don't blame OP for not beating them. At least, if he's using an actual console. First two didn't have saves, so I'd always pause them for hours (sometimes overnight) and my parents would get mad at me for wasting electricity.

Maybe it was because I played it using the keyboard (I only had a joystick for the PC back then... as in an actual joystick, not a pad), but years later I tried it again on Gems Collection on PS2, and also found the controls to be a bit off. It took me until the internet to even find out that there were secret rings in the Sonic & Knuckles levels. They're all so stupidly hidden. I understand that it's Sonic 3 Part 2 but even Flying Battery Zone's -- a level that was supposed to be right after Carnival Night Zone -- secret rings are in ridiculous locations whereas Ice Cap and Launch Base's are pretty simple to come across. You really, really have to go out of your way to find them after Mushroom Hill. Even to this day I need a map to even figure out where 3/4 of them are.

Yeah it's not that the games aren't good, it's just that my expectations from platformers are different from what Sonic is mainly about. My very first game was SMB so that probably explains my love for platformers in which you can take your time and do some experimenting, maybe find hidden stuff. You can kind of cheat the system like that but you have to reset the game after each special stage and then restart. Once you complete a special stage, the door locks, but your progress of having the emerald is saved. I feel dirty doing it these days, though.

If you enjoy exploring for hidden powerups, the original four Sanics are some of the most rewarding platformers you can play in that regard. I think you're just shit at exploring, mate.

As long as you at least try jumping into suspicious walls, you'll find them easily. You can get 6/7 Chaos Emeralds before you even complete Mushroom Hill. The game practically showers you with them. The only stupid part is that Flying Battery has no bonus rings at all, to the best of my knowledge.

It has two in each act, hence my point. I don't mind exploration in Sonic games -- hell, I've loved CD since childhood -- but the Sonic & Knuckles ring locations are really, really out of your way. Even Mushroom Hill Zone Act 2 -- which is the most liberal level in the game -- has a lot of the rings in pretty off-the-wall locations. Finally someone else with this opinion. As a kid, I always thought Sonic's sprite was badass in Sonic 1 and 2, I felt his sprite for Sonic 3 looked goofy, like they tried to make it sort of pseudo-3D rendering ala Donkey Kong Country instead of the sharp 2D sprite from previous games.
Still loved the fuck out of 3&K, but yeah.
I also didn't like the more realistic/less psychedelic color palette of Sonic 3&K, and got some time to get used to the music. I still enjoy 3&K's OST, but at first I didn't find it as appealing as 1 or 2's.

Quite literally every single person I know who has played SCD prefers it to S2 and S1. Every single one.
For me, personally, it's S3 > S&K > SCD > S3&K (too fucking long to be more enjoyable than S3 and S&K individually) > S2/S2&K > S1 > S3D. Amongst S players I know, the order of the first four in my list will vary, but the bottom three are always in the order of S2/S2&K > S1 > S3D. Always.

For me it'd go:

Between my Sonic-playing friends, only I and one other share this opinion. All of them put S3&K either first or second (after SCD), but the majority have it at the top. Of the ones that like SCD better, one made an argument that I entirely disagree with: she felt that the elemental power shields were basically worthless and needlessly gimmicky. I like the elemental power shields, even if 66% of them just disappear if Sonic, Tails or Knuckles touches something wet.

Consequentially, she also dislikes SMB3 for the same reason (gimmicky and worthless powerups) preferring SMB2JP/Lost Levels as her favourite Mario.

I and a very, very fatty fat friend of mine (hi Dan! I know you lurk and troll /vr/ a tonne) agree that S3&K is too long to be enjoyable but no one agrees with us at all.

And I also sort of think some levels in 3&K drag for too long, when I was a kid I usually dropped Sonic 3 around Garden Marble, unless I was serious about finishin the game, I usually gor bored around there.

I agree. I mean, mechanically I love it, I'd put it between S3 and S2 for me, but... the level design. It is so shit I can't stand. Most level are a mumbled mess of mazy platforms, and while I know this is because of a different design philosophy, I still don't think they're fit for a sonic game. It's a top notch in other aspects.

Goes like this for me: S3&K > S3 > S&K > S2 > S1 > Sonic Spinball > Sonic 3D.

Way to miss the point entirely, Anon. I was saying that it's /not/ the worst. I enjoy it quite a bit. So bad that it's not even on your register as a Sonic game, huh? Eep.

>>1645324
Yeah, she's pretty hardcore. Although we differ in age only by two years, she's adapted to newer gaming far better than I. I simply detest all this hifalutin newfangled gadgetry so I've never gotten into online competitive gaming. From what I understand, though, she kills on online FPS games. Like whoa. She won't actually talk on them, lying and saying she's a dude and that she's deaf (hence no talking) because she doesn't want other players fucking with her because she's vagina'd.
I know for a fact that she fucking owned at UMK3 when it was in arcades. I have witnessed her asswhuppery skills firsthand.
She's really bizarre. She's hot, thin/fit, pleasant and a gamer. I thought all gamer girls were fat, gross and bitchy.

I didn't misunderstand you, I just made questionable quoting choices, sorry. And, uh, I meant to put SCD after S1 there.

Oh, I see, I see.
Apologies, then. But still: never heard of this SCD hate until /vr/'s debut.
My friends vary a bit on opinions when it comes to S2 but none of us particularly like it. Some of them even go as far as to detest Tails for being a Mary Sue, like Diddy Kong in DKC and Dixie Kong in DKC2. I'm mostly indifferent, feeling it's not as well designed level-wise as S1 but has some superior play mechanics. It eeks by S1 just barely but had S1 had the dash in it, it would rip S2 a new fuckhole. I assume hacks are not considered in this thread, otherwise, I'd put S1+dash above S2.
And SCD's bosses are the best in the series, hands down. Getting to them, though, can be a fucking chore, I'll admit.

My feeling from looking around the net is that feeling on SCD are quite mixed, but liking SCD goes hand in hand with liking S1. They have vaguely similar level design philosophies.

Does S1 really play well with the spin dash? The level design isn't very friendly to it. It's full of pits and walls, whereas S2 and forward have mostly continuous landscapes with curves/hills to absorb spin dashes and let you use them to propel yourself.

>> No.1645665

>>1645657
I feel it's greatly improved with the dash. As you've noticed, SCD and S1 have some similar level designs. That makes SCD basically S1 with dashing.
I like the mechanics of S2 better than S1 and of S3 better than S2. You know what, though? Were we including hacks, Sonic Heroes Classic would be my favourite. ^_^

Sonic Jam has spindash in Sonic 1, so that'd make it an official release of Sonic 1 with spindash.
Still I don't see what's so bad with Sonic 2... I thought for the most part all zones were pretty fun and to me it still is one of the best games in the series.
And I'll disagree with Sonic CD's bosses... most of them were pretty meh and required almost no strategy, and were basically reused ideas from Sonic 1 and 2. The first boss looks AWESOME, that big sized mech was always something I drooled over when I saw screenshots in magazines back then, but the actual fight is a joke. However, the Metal Sonic race makes up for all the uninspired bosses. The final boss in Sonic CD is also lackluster, but then again, the original final boss ("Final Fever Zone" or something) was cut from the original game, or something along those lines IIRC, the track "final fever" can still be found in Sonic CD's sound test I believe.

And i thought you guys would fuck me up for saying that. /vr/ is the canadian board of 4chan.

Anyway don't liking a game for the sprites is stupid, but it happens...

The thing with S&K was special for me, i mean, while i was on the run i was realizing the good mapping work and then the music draw me in and i found myself playing it with a smile the very first time.

Flying battery and Lava reef 1 tunes got me loving this, specially the catchy reef. And then there were sky sanctuary and Death Egg. Fuck, i was having pure fun like a kid but on my late 20's.

All i learned from S2 was improved in S&K.wich is weird cause i like modern Sonic the same way old Sonic, but i fancy gottagofast sonic; i'm a Sonic 2 man, but i like plattform Sonic the same way.

All of this. Sonic 2 was my first Sonic experience, the Christmas of 1992. Then I got Sonic 1. When Sonic 3 + SK came out, it has been my staple Sonic game since.

Of all the 90s Sonic games, I come back to S3K the most, followed by Sonic CD, Sonic+Dash Sonic 2 and Sonic.

This coming from someone born in '84 that initially grew up on Hitachi, Amiga 500 and IBM PCs, while playing my uncle's Atari and C64, before getting a Mega Drive.

I remember this! Fuck I used to watch the movies in Sonic Jam over and over.
What was this from anyway?

Also this thread makes me want to play the classic Sonic games through again, or at least Sonic 3+K. I don't think I ever finished that as a combined game, only S3 and S&K seperately? Or maybe only once, either way, not enough times.

Sonic 2 I've played through a bunch of times though.

Did you guys enjoy playing Sonic 2+Knuckles? I remember at the time it blew my mind that they could do that with the lock-on cart. It was also kind of weird since Knuckles couldn't jump as high, I remember having trouble with the Metropolis Zone boss. But you could also get so many extra lives just by climbing walls in Chemical Plant Zone.

That short animated film was made by the same studio that animated Warner shows like Tiny Toon or Animaniacs (who were japanese, I believe).
Never knew what was it... probably some pilot for a cancelled TV show?

By the way, you ought to yourself to finish S3&K with all 14 emeralds.
