Does anyone else think this should be more popular?

Its a decent game. It is fairly popular what are you talking about?

>> No.1640263

I enjoy it and my friends hate the fact that I keep demanding they remake it for the 3DS. I honestly have never played the second one though.

It's probably the most forgotten Nintendo series of all time.

>> No.1640295

It was good and I enjoyed it but its really archaic to todays standards

>> No.1640308

>>1640295
The only thing archaic about it is having to turn before you can actually move. Other than that flaw the game is still great. If there were a patch that removed that it would be much more fun.

I'd definitely like to see a new StarTropics game.

>> No.1640318

The storyline and the character is archaic.

I thought the movement was actually unique

Games don't need stories to be fun.

Sure, Mike Jones is presented as a typical 90s kid, but that character design really isn't as archaic as you think. He's wearing a T-shirt and jeans. That's about as basic and timeless as you can get. If his hairstyle is the problem, it can be changed. Same with sticking bananas in the ears.

With how it's on roughly the same level as Earthbound, yeah I wonder that too.

I'd play a StarTropics sequel. Captain Rainbow was his last return though, and it was terribly unsuccessful.

The first game is an underrated gem and the sequel is a solid title. It deserved a SNES followup, or at the very least some representation in Smash Bros.

>> No.1640390

Wasn't this game never released in Japan? That could be why it never took off. I only played the first one. First two islands were great, then you get to island 3 which is giant and has that magma boss, that's when you know they took the gloves off and stopped fucking around.

>> No.1640396

>>1640390
it was one of those weird reverse situations.

adventure of lolo 1 is another odd one that is easy to miss as adventure of lolo in japan is actually the sequel, though i think it's part of the eggerland series that we didn't get most of.

They stopped fucking around in the first dungeon, with that trap room that existed for you being too greedy.

No damn Western Release.

I got StarTropics on the Virtual Console when it came out and thought it was really unique. Never heard about it until that moment, and I was also surprised as to why it just disappeared from the world.

You don't really see that sort of thing these days.

I agree, I don't think his design is archaic.
Though, the banana thing is one of the more iconic parts of the game, so I wouldn't mess with that.

His hairstyle is also pretty timeless. It's medium-length hair combed up, kinda like Peter Parker's in that new spider man movie.

That's not even remotely true. There's no warning, no indication what you're doing might be a bad idea until you're waist deep in it. It's random punishment for the kind of exploration you get rewarded for the rest of the time. I didn't mind it not because it was fair, but because it was fucking funny.

Yeah, Captain Rainbow is the super-powered alter ego of Mike, who hails from "Mamerica" in the game. As a further connection, Captain Rainbow fights using yo-yos, as this image demonstrates.

The whole game is about an island of forgotten heroes, like Little Mac, the Famicom Wars soldiers, and Birdo. Who better as a main character than Mike Jones, the hero so forgotten almost no one in Japan knows who he is?

Yeah, I thought so too. I forget where I read about Captain Rainbow, maybe in a preview section of Nintendo Power before it went defunct and before Captain Rainbow tanked and made a localization out of the question. All I remember is that tidbit about Mike, some of the island's inhabitants, and the part where you help Catherine/Birdo find his/her missing vibrator.

Birdo is a chick, right? And they just made her a boy for Mario 2/USA because of the stigma about fighting females in games? I don't know much about the whole 'characters whose sexuality varies in localizations' thing.

Startropics was pretty Radicola.

What's sad is it's still going on. Three new Batman games and you can never fight a woman. Even Poison Ivy has to be taken out with batarangs because god forbid Batman lays a hand on a dangerous super criminal trying to kill him. At least you can finally punch Harley, but that's only in the DLC.

Funny thing is, the part in Captain Rainbow makes you prove Birdo is indeed a woman.

Birdo, or Catherine in Japan, seems androgynous enough, also considering both East and West state that the bow and stuff is all to look pretty and feminine anyway.

It's probably made worse with games like Mario Strikers that make an entire species of Birdos all wearing the bows and stuff. At this point, Birdo is merely Birdo. I feel the same way for other Mario and game species and characters unless proven otherwise. It isn't even until the RPG games that we have specifically gendered characters for Goombas, Koopa Troopas, Bom-ombs, and such. Things like Birdo, Yoshi, and Vivian and cronies are are left vague whether there's any real difference in male or female, if they have any at all.

>> No.1644713

If you think Birdo has any possibility of being male I'm surprised you are able to read.
