Why do people do this lately? Do you really think anyone cares about the thing you're referencing in your post enough to sit down and watch a 20 minute playthrough? Seriously, cut it out.

Or maybe they are doing it to save the time for someone who was going to look it up to see what the game is like. /vr/ has a lot of problems but linking gameplay videos when listing a game you like ain't one of them.

>> No.1638893

Vert. More logical gameplay (left means steer left, right means steer right). It's a shame that verts are dominated by generic bullet hells than traditional shmups with decent level designs, though.

>> No.1638910

I've always preferred vertical shmups. For some reason they seem easier to play.

>> No.1638913

>>1638893
I think that's why I prefer hori shmups. They were generally slower paced and allowed for survival through twitch, reactionary gameplay versus straight up memorization, which seems to be the basis of most verti shmups. So is that why bullet hells basically all we get these days; they're just so easy to make?

>> No.1638919

Vertical. The only ones I played when I was a kid were 1942 and Raiden and I got back into the genre after playing toohoo a few years ago. So horizontal always feel really weird to me, and I don't like the wall hazards that are frequently there.

>> No.1638921

>>1638919
I guess it just comes down to what you played first. I started on R-Type, Gradius and Darius on the SNES.

>> No.1638928

>>1638921
Not necessarily, but it often helps. Out of those two games I listed, I really dislike 194X games today, everything is for ants and this seems common in Capcom games. Raiden (especially 2 on the Playstation) rocks though.

I agree with the other guy about bullet hells, too. I don't really like them. The only bullet hell I have that I really love is Mushihimisama Futari. Even with the touhou, my favorite one is 4, who's status as a bullet hell is debatable.

>> No.1638930

>>1638928
OT, but would you recommend Raiden IV: Overkill?

>> No.1638948

>>1638930
I'm not sure the exact differences, but I have 4 and it is a qualified "yes". The firepower and challenge are great fun. The purple death beam is back and it is kind of a hybrid between classic and bullet hell style. The music...kind of sucks and it does suffer slightly from enemy bullets blending in with the explosions/backdrop, though. So it isn't perfect and I enjoy 2 more.

>> No.1638964

>>1637791
because it was the only link for the video that didn't have an obnoxious 14 yr old talking over it, or a 30 second annoying intro. It jumped straight into the game

>> No.1638967

>>1638964
Also, it isn't like you are expected to watch a 30 minute video. Use the little bar at the bottom of the video to skip around and preview....

>> No.1638985

From what I've noticed horizontal shmups seem to have more terrain obstacles than vertical shmups which rely mostly on enemy projectiles to create obstacles. Of course there's exceptions but I guess it really just goes down to what you're used to. Best shmup I ever played was Tyrian and it was a vertical.

Bullet hells require less memorization than old school space shooters. Just because there are loads of bullets doesn't mean you need to know exactly where each one will go. And most bullet hells have slower bullets anyway so there's plenty of time to see them coming.

I don't really have a particularly preference, but for some reason I'm much better at vertical shmups than horizontal ones.

I just can't seem to manage space effectively in horizontal shmups. It's weird, as they tend to be signficicantly less bullet hell. But I just find myself running into bullets constantly. Not sure why.

Because of how the game lines up with the player. When you a vert, it's like the bullets are coming toward you, allowing you to perceive openings in the patterns better.

Genres aside, this is the main reason verts are better gameplay-wise. Hori shooters often look better, though.
