So how does /vr/ feel about console FPS games?

>> No.1637568

They were fine before a certain non-Retro piece of shit ruined things.

Honestly, completely inferior to their PC counterparts. They can be alright but they just can't compare, and this is coming from someone who played the shit out of N64 shooters including GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, Turok, etc. I loved those games in the past but I can't play any of them anymore. Meanwhile I can still play Doom, Blood, Duke, Quake etc just fine and enjoy them just as much as I did then. In fact I enjoy these games even more now than I did then because I know they're a dead breed and it's unlikely we'll ever have first person shooters like them again.

Some are quite good. Many are bad. Framerate is usually the biggest offense.

Pic related is not a game I care for but I can at least appreciate that it was a little different from most FPSes at the time and had some cool weapons and features.

I agree but kinda don't. I don't know I tend to give draw distance in that generation some slack. It adds to the atmosphere. Like silent hill......

Nah. That's just rose tinted glasses.

Yeah, unlike everything else in the game which is "necessary." What a dumb word to use for something you don't like.

So uh, let me know this before we continue. Are you really trying to defend platforming in FPS games, which is probably the last (if not the last, it's close to it) genre it belongs in?

>> No.1637618

IMO one of the worst retro genres. The genre as a whole peaked at quake 3 arena (PC) and has been in decline since then

Nah I know what you mean, actually. It kind of worked for Turok now that you've reminded me. It kind of felt like being in a really misty jungle. lol you made me do a 180 kinda, but I think the game would be better if you could see everything ahead.. although it would probably feel a lot more empty.

Actually the the game was designed with the low draw distance in mind. If you could see everything then you'd just see soldiers standing there in the distance and they wouldn't be able to see you. hmmm

>> No.1637632

>>1637619
Right. I guess the easiest way to look at it is the AI and level design was created with that limitation in mind. Would have to overhaul a lot to satisfy that unfortunate "feature".

I never beat Turok without cheats.....
I did beat two though. I loved that game.

>I did beat two though. I loved that game.
One of the few games I gave up trying to beat. I don't remember which level it was, maybe 4 or 5. 'Lair of the Blind Ones' or some shit. It was just such a big fucking level. I never figured out how to navigate it. Would get lost/didn't know where to go. I think in the end my memory card got corrupted and that was it.

Well done though. As far as I'm concerned, beating Turok 2 is actually an impressive thing.

>> No.1637659

I liked console FPSs back when they actually tried to be unique games instead of just dumbed down versions of other games that are superior on PC.

I always have thought that Quake 3 was the worst of all the Quakes. Pure arena games are shit, especially if you don't have internet, and even worse if you dislike competitions. I wish Quake 3 had a progressive campaign like the games that preceded it. Would have been fantastic. Glad Quake 4 brought it back.

>> No.1637794

As a retro genre, console FPS games suffered a lot from framerate issues. The best version of Perfect Dark is hands down the 360 HD release because it fixed some of those issues and pretties the game up without ruining its aesthetic or classic gameplay.

Turok was damn good. I beat it a few years ago after having never gotten past maybe level 3 on it as a child, and it feels very much like a supped up version of Doom. Very quick combat, awesome weapons, great sound and music. Easily one of the best alongside Perfect Dark.

Either way, console FPS didn't really come into its own until the introduction of dual joysticksm though the N64 did well enough with what it had (except the framerates, seriously). I'm not experienced enough with the Playstation to name any notable FPS games for it besides Doom, which was easily the best Doom port besides Doom 64.

These days, they're mostly worse versions of their PC counterparts.

I didn't find Q3 that interesting. Q1 was simply badass, especially for deathmatch. Q2 had an amazing SP campaign, but not as interesting for DM (slower paced). Then there's Doom and Duke3D, the kings of SP, with tons of mapsets and mods, and delightfully easy to map for! I can't really pick a "best" game, because all of those have something unique to offer. I'd say the FPS golden age was from Doom through Quake 2. And there's still a bunch of fine games in there that I have yet to play, like Blood, Redneck Rampage, Marathon series...

Pic related: all the amazing games supported by the Chocolate Doom port.

Gotta disagree pretty strongly there. Whoever did that remake totally changed the characters and style the original game had, instead of simply touching up the models like they should have. For the worse.

That's because you've gone soft or at least lost the groove. Games with elements similar to Doom, Blood, etc still are getting release these days, not to mention those games are easily moddable. There's nothing like Goldeneye or Perfect Dark now. Nothing even close.

Yeah but both have disgusting framerate that put me off. Just can't touch that shit anymore. This is coming from someone that 100%'d both games btw (every mission done double o agent/perfect agent, unlocked all cheats by doing the required speed runs, trashed his friends at multiplayer, etc).

I would like to try the rerelease of PD on 360 but I don't own a shitbox so that won't happen. I'm sure that's great. As the vanilla PD and GE stand however, no thank you.

Better when they have a Total Conversion to play on PC:

>Doom 64 TC/EX
>Doom PSX TC

and now

.... Turok EX.

Yeah, I think this one had a PC port too. But good luck getting that to work. Turok III is console only so, so let's hope that gets remade next.

Why does Doom 64 have such mediocre ratings? I've seen it mentioned here quite a few times in a very positive manner. Is it just nostalgia?

Because back in the day magazines would actually punish games for "being too similar" to other games. The fact that it was yet another Doom sequel was held against it.

It's quite the opposite.

Doom 64 arrived at a weird time. It was very much seen as an old fashioned throwback when relatively slick 'real' 3D stuff was still a novelty on consoles. Doom was stuck in the past, Turok was THE FUTURE.

I remember Doom getting panned at the time for being 'more of the same,' or for not being true 3D, for even daring to use crudely animated sprites instead of a shiny polygon dinosaurs. It got written off by knee-jerk reaction rather than on its own merits. It was only after the dust had a chance to settle and the novelty wore off on the slicker titles that people started to reassess the situation and realise that when 'more of the same' means 'another incredibly well crafted Doom campaign' then that's no bad thing.

It coming to PC via the TC and emulation probably helped matters. What was written off by PC gamers as just another console game has been looked at with fresh eyes there too.

My advice would be to do it in Doom 64 Ex and with the framerate limit turned off. It's certainly still a great experience when played with a pad on the original hardware but these days it's just that bit more comfortable on the PC.
