On more serious note do French or people in other countries that got localized versions of games prefer the localized version they got or the English version? Personally I have tried playing fan-translated Finnish versions of Chrono Trigger and Tales of Phantasia myself and they just didn't feel right.

Depends. In older games, the difference isn't that big since both are more or less terrible translations made with not enough time and/or people whose Japanese skills aren't exactly stellar. If the quality is on par, I usually go with our (German) version since I simply prefer the language over English.

As far as I was ever able to ascertain, it was mostly plot nuances. In other words, nothing major. Slight details that lead to major misinterpretations. Like the Sephiroth "clones" in Neibleheim. The original character is a separate mod you can download, they are creating seven different custom mods for optional use with their translation such as a difficulty mod, cheats, or a new quest.
Though that still doesn't alleviate my concerns with their translation. With that level of cognitive dissonance I wonder how 'accurate' it will be. especially after I've read some of their forum posts and they continue to say FF7 was a 'dark' game originally. Maybe the translation is butchered, but to me the game always seemed mostly lighthearted adventure.

I'm shocked to have anyone describe FFVII as a lighthearted adventure. I think with the original translation in mind, the story was a tad darker than anything else done in the series to that point. I'll give some examples: gene replication gone awry, genocide (of the ancients), implied rape and sexual torture (of Areith as well as her biological mother), insanity, the coping with death and loss, murder in general, prostitution and general exploration of women from the slums, the threats of genital mutilation... I feel like I could go on but I'm too tired.

Nothing minor either. I've played the original version. It's exactly as silly, and jsut as terribly written as the English version. The myth literally is damage control performed by fans who, as they age, need to find new ways to explain how their favourite work of art is so amateurishly scripted.

I just want to point out that I don't disagree with you. I have no first hand experience with the original script. These days people complain about the priority by companies of graphics over story. The fact of the matter is that this was no different in '96. FFVII was considered an enormous graphical advancement at the time, and I personally believe that the idea was to make a simple story that could essentially be read within 4-5 pages seem as edgy and convoluted as possible. It wasn't done with much finesse.

This was probably the tamest thing you listed there. Threatening to stomp/slice off someone's nads is such a generic taunt that I wouldn't take it at face value. It's like how someone says they're going to kick someone's ass but an ass is never actually ever kicked.

FF7 is a FANTASY adventure. It has elements that are dark and disturbing, elements that are fun and light-hearted, and everything in between. Every classic Final Fantasy game has had comic relief, silly characters and zany antics to offset the more serious elements. Sakaguchi understood that colour and joy was important to any RPG inspired by the imagination, even if the plot was "dark" in nature. This is why his FF games were always the best and why the series went to shit immediately after he left.

Low level runs are conceptually palatable because they mean a challenge which can't be negated by mere level grinding, which is the case for shit like initial equipment runs or no magic or all magic or solo character or whatever. I don't think I would have the tenacity for it though.
There's this bit in EarthBound where if you call your dad, he'll tell you how much exp you need to get the next level. But if you reach the level cap, he'll say something like "Oh, you can't level up anymore. That's just fine, but..." I guess there's a few ways to interpret the line, but I like to think of it as Itoi quietly shaking his head because if you managed to pass level 80 or so, you've put entirely too much work into his silly little world and have likely forgotten to have fun with it.

>you've put entirely too much work into his silly little world and have likely forgotten to have fun with it.

Some people find grinding fun. And let's leave it at that without folks trying to argue over something that is oh-so-very subjective.

>FF7 is a FANTASY adventure. It has elements that are dark and disturbing, elements that are fun and light-hearted, and everything in between.
thank you
every time some dim shit blathers on about 7 or 5 or 9 or whatever being a "lighthearted adventure" I pray for my own death

5 pretty much is a lighthearted adventure, though.

5 IS more lighthearted than basically every other plot-driven installment, that's pretty much a fact. It's brimming with jokes, puns and shonen anime moments. That however doesn't mean that it didn't have its serious moments and drama, is a joke game and doesn't have a good story

The cap is 99. It's been years since I played it so 80 might not be the level you're likely to end the game at. I dunno. I'm pretty sure Ness usually winds up like 10 or 15 levels higher than everyone else though.

It doesn't work that way! You need:
-255 ragnarok
-255 revelation
-255 nuclear winter
-255 lucifer's hammer

or at least 127 of each

Madou Monogatari games nearly all have a hidden final level that has a much higher than usual required EXP. It also unlocks desperation attacks for normal use (at least in the Saturn game, but I believe it does something similar in the others too).

In the Saturn game, every character has a set of spells they learn based on their level, and the next highest spell is available only when you fill up your SP meter in fights. Then you can use one spell at 2x power, including the next highest level one which you can't even cast yet.
Normally, everyones ultimate spell is only useable if you maxed your SP meter, but at lvl 99 you unlock your ultimate spell, and can use it regularly (mana points permitting).

So basically it's like if Final Fantasy 7 made Limit Breaks available as a regular command once you hit the level cap.
Though, SP meter can still be maxed for a 2x powerful magic attack.

Also in that game SP meter charges different per character, some of them have it charged as they get hit (FF7 style), but some charge as they DEAL damage, or get healed, etc.

And the final character you use in the last dungeon has an adventure-map-only special move (every character has one), that fully charges your SP meter at the cost of some mana.
