I just got back from the new Godzilla movie and it got me thinking that I've never played a Godzilla video game. I'm hoping there might be one or two good ones out there and it's not all just a bunch of licensed crap. Any suggestions?

Some of them are, at best, okay.
When I was a child I had some fun with Super Godzilla for instance. The one you're probably thinking of, Battle Legends, is a standard 2D fightan game. One cool thing is that Godzilla changes appearance based on his opponent to how he looked when he fought said opponent.
But the best and most Godzilla-y games are the three sixth gen ones.

There's a pretty cool japan-only game for the Game Gear. It's part beat-'em-up, part strategy.

There was another one for the Saturn, and it even supported the mouse peripheral, apparently. It never left japan.

Saturday, the night after seeing the new Godzilla, I did a play through of Super Godzilla. It's definitely a "for fans only" kind of game, but it's very rewarding if you tough it out long enough to get accustomed to the awkward gameplay style. The final fight is an epic boss encounter and the story is better than in some of the movies.

That said, Monster of Monsters on the NES is still more fun. My only complaint is that it gets repetitive. It's like if Super Mario Bros. recycled the stage from the first two worlds ad nauseum. By the time you get to the place where you start fighting opponents Godzilla actually battled, you've already played the same type of level dozens of times over.

Still, it's one that I'm very nostalgic about and would gladly pick up for 15 to 20 minutes of play any day of the week.
