What (retro) RPGs would you guys recommend if I'm looking for something with a lot of side-quests/additional content/quests for new weapons, armor, etc.?

Basically RPGs that excel in stuff to do outside of the main plot just to strengthen my party/character.

PC is my preferred platform but SNES and PSX would also work.

Most of mine are PSX.

Final Fantasy 9 is prob my #1. I could do the chocobo digging/chocograph stuff alone for hours.

Final Fantasy 8
Suikoden (the original)
Suikoden 2
Final Fantasy Tactics

In a similar vein, the Baldur's Gate games had tons and tons of sidequests.

Most any Western RPG or computer RPG in general. There's the Infinity Engine games such as Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, PlaneScape and so forth. The Elder Scrolls series, Ultima series, Wizardry series, Fallout series, etc. Hell, just go to GameFAQs, browse PC and sort by genre > RPG.

I don't think OP was referring to JRPGs, and FF9 is the only one on your list that has a considerable number of sidquests.

The Exile games are pretty much just a bunch of optional character-building dungeons and occasionally you come across one that gets you closer to winning.

You actually have Katrina in your party in U7?

But... why?

I've found the Oracle Virtual Machine great for running the Exiles.

I only dabbled in DOSbox- and even then I had to use a frontend.

How easy it that Oracle thing to run?

It's not that hard, I'm not particularly computer savvy, but I managed it. The trickiest part is making a sharing folder so you can transfer files from the host machine to the virtual machine (if you have the CDs, it's easier, as you can just install it in the vm), but again, I persevered, mostly by just reading the manual.

Hell, the first time I played Ultima 7 I just randomly recruited everyone I saw and marched 'em around the world map. I had no idea what I was doing but it was a grand time.

Might & Magic III has side-quests up the wazoo. The others in the series are probably similar...

This game has amazing music for the NES. It's very dark and powerful, effective use of the triangle wave and those meaty drum samples.

Daggerfall and Darklands have unlimited sidequests and are hilariously huge.
Daggerfall is bigger and has FPS controls.
Darklands is more diverse and plays like a proto Baldur's Gate.

Elder Scrolls and Baldur's Gate were both heavily influended by Darklands.

I am 100% brand new to this board, and this thread is exactly what I was hoping to find. I'm in an RPG rut and crave a traditional pc RPG that uses old school statistics and mechanics; actually having stats like Charisma and skills like Artifacts and Lockpicking. NPC's that behave to you differently, and a good party system. I just beat Wizardry 8 again, does anyone have something similar I could try? I've played Baldur's Gate extensively

Sorry for the paragraph
