What's your personal experience with flashcarts for classic consoles?

>> No.1629676

I just recently started browsing /vr/ and haven't heard of flashcarts til now, what are they, cartridges that you can put roms on?

>> No.1629681

>>1629676
Yep.

>> No.1629683

>>1629681
Yes, this one works with an SD card.

Is a chinese copy of the Everdrive, but it's cheaper, like 40-50€.

I was considering building an emulator machine until I saw this.

>>1629681
So each system has it's own type of flash carts I guess, and you need some device to flash it by reading your pc and transferring the image to the cart? then you just pop it in the console and there you go? the z64 was the original one for n64 right?

>> No.1629693

>>1629687
It's easier than that.

Have you ever seen/used a DS flashcart? Drag and drop the roms from your computer to an SD, put it into the flashcart and you're set.

>> No.1629696

>>1629693
damn, so the computer doesn't have to be physically connected to the device no more? interesting. they got any for the n64 that are not too expensive? I always wanted a z64 but by now they're too much.

>> No.1629702

Holy crap, I'm looking at the everdrive right now, 100 bucks if I'm not mistaken is not that bad for something like this.

>> No.1629712

But it still counts as emulation

>> No.1629715

>>1629712
How come?, the hardware is processing the rom as if it was an original rom right? technically nothing is being processed differently, but because it's not an original cartridge?

I found this for 70 bucks.

Not sure if I should get EU or US console.

>> No.1629730

>>1629728
Depends where you are, I live in the states and I know that getting a hold of a US genesis isn't too hard, if it is that expensive, I know that Goodwill's see them all the time, and they price them low as hell.

>> No.1629749

>>1629730
I mean, there's any advantage?

If I'm not mistaken genesis runs at 60Hz while mega drive runs at 50, but I'm not sure if there's any way to force an european console to reach 60Hz.

The region free's useful in the obvious ways, what with some games not getting exports or having regional differences. You may be a European who wants to play Contra or an American who wants to play Probotector, for example.

>> No.1629841

>>1629749

Genesis and Megadrive both support SCART. Yes, you heard me. Genesis has native SCART support.

>> No.1629842

>>1629841
I know shit about connections sorry, are you telling me no mather what region I go for both will reach 60Hz?

>> No.1629865

>>1629842

Oh. Sorry, I thought you were a Euro. Just get one of the model 1 Genesis consoles, and be done with it.

The earliest model 1s have no region-lock what so ever. But the latter two versions of the Model 1 have TSS, which also acts as a region-lock.

Enjoy.

But anon, I'm euro. I always believed that Mega Drive II ran at 50Hz.

I think region of a game is not relevant in flashcard situation.
You should do 50/60Hz mod anyway

My experiance with flashcarts for anything prior than the GBA sums up with looking at their price online and not buying them.

>>1629683
Huh, that sounds more reasonable. Where can I get those? Alibaba?

>> No.1629883

>>1629876

God damn you Europeans are fucking stupid.

The European MegaDrive uses PAL. So yeah, it runs at 50Hz.

There are cheaper options without all the package.

Is there a knockoff for the 64 cart? It's also expensive as hell.

I have no idea, found this a couple of days ago by accident.

I'm interested in something similar for the SNES as well.

Also, found this but I don't know if it's any good.

>£32 for a modcart without packaging
that seems pretty reasonable considering that its less than the price of most new releases and it would allow the playing of an entire library of games, that said i like to have physical copiesayway so im not sure if i would get this

TMSS has nothing to do with region lock
region lock is entirely done through software, by looking at hardwired region code
the region code can be modified using switches and some soldering

Flashcarts emulate cartridge hardware using a FPGA, basically ROM and SRAM access only.

This is also why it has trouble running games which used custom cartridge hardware, like SNES DSP games, Virtua Racing, games using EEPROM instead of SRAM for backup and a few unlicensed games with copy protection when the ROM has not been patched (like Pier Solar)

>> No.1632262

>>1632007
Flashcarts only emulate special chips. As for the ROM data itself, it's read with a microcontroller and fed to the cart pins with shift registers iirc.
