So, let's talk about retro puzzle games. Not just falling block puzzle games, but anything within the broader genre, like action-puzzle games such as Bomberman.

I still play Tetris 2 and Super Columns pretty regularly, especially for their vs. CPU modes. Interestingly enough, both sequels were often overlooked because of their differences. Tetris 2 deviated so much from the classic Tetris formula that it's pretty much Tetris only in name, and Super Columns added several new mechanics that later sequels never reused for some reason.

You don't deserve to call yourself a retro player if you haven't played Chip's Challenge.

An honorable mention also goes to the Logical Adventure of the Zoombinis.

I'm a big Tetris Attack fan. Would play the Gameboy version religiously on car trips and such. I never had the SNES version until two weeks ago.

Sometimes I wish HAL would go back to making one of these games instead of another Kirby game.

do you play time attack? that is the only way to play it. Vs mode would never end. I play this with friends competively for over 12+ years. 2min avg is around 60k +

But if they did, it will just be called Kirby's Block Mover.

If anything, be glade that HAL has not fall under the whole moe/cute girls thing like Namco (Pac Man to IdolM@ster) & Konami (TwinBee to Love Plus) like most of Japan's gaming industry.

Few things beat having a sweet soul brother and playing Puzzle Fighter rounds that end up lasting 6 minutes each because holy fuck do we know how to counter each other.

My craft is Tetris though. I recall in high school some Asian kid bragging about having a ridiculously high score in Tetris DS in programming class. I beat it handily thanks to the dumb "roll" thing newer Tetris games have now.

Problem is, no one ever wants to play me in Tetris head to head on either the SNES version of Tengen Tetris. I've only met one guy who came close and we traded off high scores for a high.

Sokoban: this game's old as dirt and has been remade a zillion times. Pic related, this version was coded in sed (the "stream editor" for Unix systems...)

lol You're either conflating a score from another version of the game with Tetris Attack's or you're just straight up full of shit. No way in hell can you get that score consistently, if you can even get it at all.

Also stop playing on level 5 speed, that's an easy solution to matches lasting 30 minutes. Vs. most is the true meat of the game, competing in simultaneous score attack is a poor substitute.

Tetris 2 is awesome.

Here's list of my favorite puzzle games:
GB/GBC: Tetris 2, Tetris Attack, Dr. Mario, Mario's Picross, Boulderdash (if it counts)
GBA: Guru Logic Champ, bit Generation: Digidrive, Polarium Advance (a gba sequel to nds game :D)

yes you can get that score easily if you played as long as I have. You can hit the 40-48k range with level 2 thats if you never mess up and do what i call a secret technique. The secret to high score is get it to the highest combo 12x. anymore will give you a question mark. question mark gives you less point than the initial 1x start combo. (up to 35k points if you dont mess up). To get to the elite group with 40k+ score is to pop a few blocks on the side or start a different chain (very difficult for chain) during 10x without clearing out to much block to stop the 10x to getting 12x. You score will rocket up fast. Because when you pop different blocks during your 10x, anything you pop will count as the 10x point. Thats all their is to it. So to get to 60k+ range, you have to play lvl 8+

And for VS like I said, it's just a endurance match for hours. Whoever get tired just quit. Each time you pop that big block, you just move the pieces over, its not even hard. you just keep going and going.

But like i said, I have a competitive group of friends that plays. At one point the whole neighbor hood was playing this around 50+ people. We even set up a tournament for this with 54 entrants back in the days.

That's because HAL is a subsidiary of Nintendo, and they don't have to go to desperate measures to make money. Had they been a normal third party, they probably would've.

Plus all Konami makes nowadays is MGS and PES.

>yes you can get that score easily if you played as long as I have.
I've been playing the games since the SNES release.

>You can hit the 40-48k range
This is much more reasonable.

>The secret to high score is get it to the highest combo 12x.
It's 13x. How anyone could claim to be intimately familiar and make this mistake makes me doubt your credibility even more.

As for running large chains on the side the problem is Tetris Attack has that extra set of shapes for a total of six which ends up making it very considerably more difficult to do this consistently compared. 60K consistently is just plain bullshit, there are too many random issues that rear their head making it more about chance than skill.

>So to get to 60k+ range, you have to play lvl 8+
Hmm, you know what I spend most of my time getting high scores alone, which actually has some pretty major discrepancies between two-player time trial. In singleplayer you can only choose from three block falling settings. Perhaps two-player scores aren't really comparable to one-player scores at all.

>> No.1625717

>>1625709
I don't think it's impossible, I think it's extremely improbable to get any score like that consistently given the mechanics of Tetris Attack.

But enough talk. There's an easy for you to prove your skills to me. Let's setup some netplay over ZSNES 1.36. Your bullshit will remain bullshit until you can demonstrate it.

Deadly Rooms of Death (1997).
It has very simple game mechanics but when combined in various ways they can be made into ridiculously complex puzzles. There are tons of levels and the difficulty curve rises steadily through the whole game. It's also the only puzzle game I've played that is so immersive it feels more like an action game, kind of like turn-based Devil May Cry.
I recommend the free remake from 2003 (Architects' Edition) which works fine on modern machines.

>>1624850
I played that when it was mentioned in one of the previous threads, but didn't like it. The gameplay is basically just simple door & key puzzles while avoiding more or less unfair situations (mostly because of your small FOV), including plain trial and error like invisible platforms over water and dead-end corridors.

Am I the only one who played Tetris Blast? I think it's the only iteration of Bombliss that made its way out of Japan, but I could be mistaken.

It's sort of like Tetris, except there are bombs attached to the Tetrominoes. When you form a line, any bombs intersecting it are exploded, and you can cause chain reactions that clear away several adjacent tiles.

There's also a versus CPU mode that involves characters that move around the screen and try to mess up your progress. You have to wear down their hit points by exploding any bombs near them.

My friend and I just started playing Tetris Attack last night, and now we're hooked to Vs. Admittedly, I have some single-player experience, and have been practicing combos and hot combos on the GBA game, but playing Vs. (and experiencing level 10 play) was exhilarating. It's like a fighting game but I actually enjoy it.
