I have to say that his later reviews (like Alien 3 and Bill & Ted) have gotten incredibly stale and only rely on it's made by LJN, therefore it's shit, HURR rainbow of shit DURR thing he has already made way too many times. I know it's a running gag but he seriously needs to have some other content for his new episodes, at least he seemed to be on right track with his Big Rigs episode.

Also pic related, it's a game I have been waiting him to review for 8 years and making an entertaining episode about it and the show it's based on shouldn't be too hard but knowing AVGN he is never going to review it since it doesn't have the LJN logo on it.

He's not a good actor so I just prefer him to be genuine, and I don't buy into his insistence that AVGN is a "character". I mean it is, but you can tell its based on his personality and his frustration with the games, at a most extreme it's an exaggeration of a side of him I'm sure. In the earlier episodes you could tell he was either genuinely mad at a game or channeling rage of when those games pissed him off as a kid. And it seemed genuine, because he had history with those games and it gave him genuine grief in the past. Now he's just forcing this whole anger as a shtick and it just comes out forced and awkward, and you can tell he gives zero shits about most of the new games he's reviewing, as his well of games that pissed him off as a kid has dried up now. I just rather he would give me his actual impression of a game and not just shoehorn anger as his go-to emotion.
If you see his other non-AVGN videos you can see that this guy has a truly empathetic personality and is great in front of a camera when he's being genuine, so really what I want is for him to just try and be himself instead of forcing this whole anger shtick.

I don't entirely agree. When he first started he was much more of a character. His more recent videos have him talking more chill about the game and analyizing it. Of course there's still SHIT FUCKBALLS but that's just the character.

I do like the fact it's a character, because otherwise I would think it feels very forced. I think it's an interesting concept, to review something but do it in a theatrical way. It's more than just a review, it's well an experiment I suppose. How can this be entertaining or interesting? What I like about the Nerd character is that it's a character, but still a rather "normal" one that can talk intelligently about the game. If someone wasn't doing it as a character it would seem kind of stupid.

In every thread where games typically considered hard like Contra or Ghosts and Goblins are mentioned even in passing there will be tryhards who emerge to tell us how they can beat those games while blindfolded and handcuffed without dying once; that means the games aren't really hard and do nothing to deserve their memetic status as difficult despite being universally recognized as such. It's like I am in kindergarten all over again. Of course, AVGN's videos are also not representative of the actual extent of his skill because he will specifically create and choose footage to display a game's perceived shortcomings and make fun of them. His aim is not to play games perfectly to the extent of his ability you fucking autists. Go to tasvideos or something if that's what you want to see.

I liked most of AVGN's latest episodes tho, Big Rigs was pretty great, maybe one of his best. I just hope he'd make episodes more frequently. Also with the E.T. graveyard being excavated before AVGN got to exploring it, doesn't that essentially defeat the entire point of his movie? Is that still in the making?

I think the thing you have to realize about the AVGN is that he's trying to convey what he felt as a kid when he played the game. He's looking at it from a kid's perspective, rather than analytical point of view. He does a pretty good job summarizing how a kid would feel with a game, which is fucking frustrated.
Kid's don't have refined tastes, they either like something or hate it.

That said, it's really easy to tell when it's forced.

Key to the Kingdom was my favorite board game growing up. I wish that was a longer episode.

I like him, but he seems to try and change it up too much lately. He's not really angry anymore, he's more softspoken lately. It really started to go this way when he moved into the current room he's in. All the episodes before it, when he was in that other room, without the wood paneling, he was always really fucking angry and he had that accent everyone loved. The show has pretty much gone from just screaming at a shitty game to just reviewing a shitty game. It's not bad now, I still like it, but it's nothing like it was before.

I mean just watch Independence Day and anyone of his newer videos. He's just so fucking angry in that episode, yelling curses left and right and just yelling all the time, then he does that stupid shit like throwing the disc around the world back at him and those kinda things are really just what made the show.

The old show is Angry Video Game Nerd and the new show should be called James Rolf reviews.

Someone has already said it, but he's pretty much given up the nerd character. It's pretty much just James in a nerd shirt now. I like how he used to have just seemingly thrown the shirt on for filming and looked like he didn't wanna be there in his earlier videos, it really added to the angry and drunk part of the character. I like his new videos, but not as much as his older because I really like the nerd character. He's also doesn't seem to have as much of an accent as he used to.

I get what everyone is saying about how the character changed, the review style changed, all that jazz. And while I agree, for me that's not what's important. I've watched all his reviews, and re-watch most of them fairly often, and I've figured out what it is that makes them enjoyable or not: passion.

When James is passionate about a particular game, or console, or era, it really shows. You can hear how much he enjoys talking about it and how familiar he is with it. Watch the start of the first Castlevania review, or the multi-part Ghostbusters one, and any time he talks about the NES as a console / cultural piece. It's heartfelt, honest, and passionate. This is when I enjoy watching him. I don't give a shit about the anger, with or without is fine, and while I love the homemade effects he uses, even if you stripped it all away, I'd still like watching it.

That's why most of the recent ones to me seem dull; a lot of the games he has been reviewing lately are games he didn't play, or isn't familiar with. There's plenty of shit episodes, but I'll still keep watching.
