GBC or SNES?

>> No.1613073

SNES. Actually, I don't know, I don't remember playing all that large of variety on either, but the games I did play, I played the shit out of. However, I mostly remember playing GB games on my GBC.

How is there a choice? SNES version looks amazing, some of the best graphics on the system. I appreciate what they tried to do on the GBC, but it just can't compare.

>> No.1613085

Doesn't the GBA one have extra content? I can't remember.

GBA?

It doesn't matter, which is good because that's actually a tough question.

SNES obviously has more colors, higher resolution, and better effects. Battles have pretty backgrounds which are entirely nonexistant on the GBC. On the other hand, you move half a tile at a time instead of a full tile which is a total pain in the ass when you're searching for hidden items. The second tile layer makes some areas look strange and it's slightly harder to tell where you can and can't walk, but this is nitpicking.

Music is naturally better on SNES. There's instruments and even countermelodies not present in the other versions. Occasionally they're a little washed out (like in the last dungeon), but they pack a punch when it counts (such as the final boss).

The GBC version truncates some names and the text box is tiny, but the SNES fan translation has a handful of text bugs such as garbled status effect indicators. The worst is appraising items, which gives you incorrect information and can even crash the game. Also a few script mistakes like the Sacred Talisman getting inconsistently referred to as Holy Crest.

GBC has one extra dungeon in the post game I missed during my playthrough, but I hear it's not very good.

Is there a list of all the personality speciffic dialog in the game? I know the guard in the king's room comments on Smart.

I'll go with GBC then as I can't figure out how to get SNES 9x to let me assign fast-forward to a controller button.

Uggh, way too many lines that would be abusable but don't show up on screen all at once.

Sometimes I forget how (relatively) recent the GBC was (and this was released in the west very late in the GBC's life). How did the NES script dance around all this?

>>1614136
I've tried that. Only accepts keyboard keys. For a game that is as frequently slow as an old jRPG, it's much nicer to have it on a bumper than constantly reaching to my keyboard.

>> No.1614208

Also: Not a single boss fight so far. I suspect the guy who stole the crown would have been the first if I actually bothered to resolve that plot thread and not just grab the dream ruby.

I can assign keys to it from my PS1 controller going in via USB, in Snes9x v1.53. Not sure what your issue is.

I can see why boss fights are so infrequent so far: Increase just makes made that thief gang pointless.

This game REALLY deserved its T rating.

I took a few months off during my first playthrough of this game, and I can never get back into it. It's not an easy world map to jump back into. I keep debating whether to start over or not so it stays in my backlogue

SNES for the graphics, GBC for the extra content.

Nah, it's actually kind of fun, some exclusive items and some background info on Rubiss.
The problem is that...to complete the thing you need to collect EVERY SINGLE monster medal. That's fucking madness.

GBC, because then I can actually take it with me. (Cyclo DS Flash Cart)

>> No.1615071

The GBC version is probably the best RPG on that system, while the superior SNES version is just one among several greats. Funny how that works out (maybe).

Side note, why did Squeenix not immediately continue the remakes on the GBA, instead waiting until the DS?

Either way, I need to replay this game at some point.

>> No.1615384

>>1615071
Well for whatever reason, I'm glad they didn't/ I would hate to see my precious Dragon Warrior series butchered on the GBA with low res graphix and Horrid staticy sound quality.

Funny thing though. Now that I have a 3DS. I am starting to notice that even the DS has sound quality issues as well. Not anything real noticeable without headphones on, but it's there.

>> No.1615403

>>1613085

>> No.1615425

>>1615071
Because they decided to continue the remakes on Sony consoles. Don't forget that DQ4 and DQ5 were on PS1/PS2 respectively.

>> No.1615560

>>1614332
Just start it over, you'll later get to a part where you can access the whole world and need to remember some clues/things that happened earlier to get what you need and progress. Same thing happened to me, I just tried to wing it without remembering what the old towns/locations were and had to lean on a guide to get through the end.

Restart and carry on, anon. But do finish it, it's an amazing game.
