SMB2 is merely the oldest game that I remember playing; my older brothers had other games and even an Atari once upon a time I might have played. Also I can't say I have a true & absolute favorite game, but FF6 is at least a top 3. I think I've played through it a half dozen times now.

I don't really have any current favourite games as I haven't really played many more recent titles after the PS2 gen and usually just casually play older titles I already know or missed out.
I kinda lack the ambition to invest huge amounts of time into games these days.

I'd rather make games than play them now.

Honestly the only shooting game/franchise I really got into and could play both with friends and online for hours without getting bored was the Gears of War trilogy. The games got better at each installment until GoW4 came and I lost interest.
I still play GoW3 a lot, it's basically the only reason I haven't gotten ridden of my eggsbox yet.

I played mostly platformers as a kid. Didn't try out shooters until much later.

It has such a tight gameplay system that it allows for almost infinite challenge without becoming unfair and annoying. Presentation-wise, it has exactly what it needs and skips on everything else, which I adore.

Simply put, it's a game that consists only of gameplay-driven stages that get harder the better you play, and where you might die constantly, but it's never the game's fault, and you know it. And between the stages there are joke cutscenes starring the game's bosses. It's my one perfect game.

Tough call as I rate them both equally, although, I dread the capra demon in ds1, I feel no matter how well you play you're always underleveled for it, same with ornstein and smough, and having to feed 30 humanity to queelags sister in order to save solaire, the camaraderie between me, benhart and vengarl spoke to me more than solaire for the final boss fights.

Was surprisingly hard to track my gaming history and pick favourites. Probably missed some of my big ones, but eh.

here,and yeah, FF7 totally defined my young adulthood. That 'young adult' period, 96-2000 for me was the era when I played the most video games relative to any time of my life. Clicking O and X buttons on Square RPGs deep into the night when I should have been writing papers.

Well, with the exception of my high school years where the CD Add-On debacle, combined with my imagined maturity had me thinking I was past it, I've been a serious gamer my whole life. Every gen felt different to me up to the "modern" era, i.e. non-retro. I thought it was just because I finally really grew up although I do still play the good modern games they just never feel like any kind of huge innovation so much as just more money we have to spend to play the new stuff, with barely enough stand-out titles to be worth it and manufactured exclusivity for no purpose other than to get you to buy everything.

Basically, everything beyond 5th gen is like one big CD add-on.

The odd thing is I feel like I do have some things in common with people who were born in the early 80s. Maybe it's because my family still kind of lived as if it was the 80s for a few years in the early 90s (a few of my aunts and uncles still dressed as if it was the 80s). Plus, I had a lot of hand-me-downs from my older cousin who had 80s clothes.

I feel ya man. When I was 5 (at 1989), dad bought an IBM PC (for Lotus 1-2-3) and placed it in my room. Bad move. I actually formatted one of his data diskettes just because the only thing there was DOS and the DOS instruction book.
In the end he began buying/getting game diskettes and the PC ended up becoming our entertainment station (poor Lotus 1-2-3).

Since this is /vr/, I didn't use any modern video games. I still tried to make the list as accurate as possible using retro vidya that defined my life at that time.

Obviously I played Majora's Mask before adulthood, but I feel like I see something new every time I go back, and it still blows my mind today to see how dark it was, while still focusing primarily on gameplay.

Duke3D just needed a fast 486. A 486DX/33 like mine was a bit too slow, but a 486DX2/66 was good enough. Faster machines could run in high-res mode.
Since my machine was too slow, I ended up playing Doom, Heretic, Hexen and Descent instead. Those all ran fine, although some later mods needed more horsepower (big maps with lots of details).

I don't understand why the 3x3 mosaic thread on /vr/ didn't succeed, and this one did.

I never liked these because it makes me realize I'm older than most of /vr/, mosaic would be better.

I don't post graph because frankly there's no "defining" game I have for any period. Always played a variety of games. I could make a list, but there would be like dozens for each period, and hardly anyone would know what they are (most people here probably aren't familiar with Amstrad and Amiga games, except the most popular ones that were also on other platforms). And that's not even talking about text mode or BASIC games. So it's a pointess waste of energy to even try and make this graphic...

Mario was a big part of my early childhood. At the age of 10, Super Mario RPG began the development of my love for RPGs. But it was Breath of Fire III that truly captivated me.

I played sooo many games when I was younger. Some games I was probably better at back then!

Some of these aren't my favourites as I remember great times and loving Smash Bros, Dynamite Heady, Sonic 2, Perfect Dark and a million other games. These are ones that first pop in my head as 'defining' just because I've got a specific memory attached to each of them, so they're defining in that way.

The first game I ever PLAYED was my friend's Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt/World Class Track Meet 3-in-1 cart for his NES when I was ~3 years old, but the first game I ever OWNED is Super Mario World (which is why I don't have that 3-in-1 cart pictured). Ironically enough, those same friends gave me their NES + games last year, 22 years AFTER I first played their system--I just found that same 3-in-1 cart a few days ago when I was fixing their PC!!

Welp, here's my clearest answer. I've got a ton of other games that could fit on the list, but that would take a lot of time. Not pictured, all the old DOS and early windows games I used to play.

Out of curiosity, I've done a count of the years claimed, and took out one or two obvious trolls. In case anyone was wondering...

1984,1989, and 1994 were the three most common ages posted. 15, 12, and 14 posters respectively.

The Super Nintendo was what I grew up with and I still think it had some of the best games of it's day.

I find it hard to go further back to NES era though, and I think that's just because it was before my time. However I can play older arcade games without difficulty.
