Here it is! The 70s to 90s computer gaming thread!
It's purpose? Well, to talk and share stuff about computers from the 70s, 80s and first half of the 90s. Share your past experiences, your newly acquired machines, your collection, tips about emulator configurations, or about hardware expansions.
Whether it's an IBM/clone, a C64, an Apple II, a TRS-80, an Amiga, an MSX, or any other computer, don't hesitate to post!

Here's a few of my machines:
- A PC-AT clone with an i486-DX2 CPU @66MHz, 8MB of RAM, a Cirrus Logic SVGA chipset with 1MB of VRAM, a Sound Blaster 16 with an MT-32 hooked, and a 3com Etherlink III LAN card.

- An Amiga 500 rev.6 with 512KB of ChipRAM, FatAgnes that allow me to have up to 1MB of Chip RAM, and 2 external floppy units (one need to have a new belt)

- A PC-XT clone laptop with a 80c86 CPU @8MHz, 640KB of RAM, CGA chipset and beeper.

- An Amstrad CPC 6128 who's floppy drive belt need to be replaced.

- A PC-9801 N laptop who's battery broke and spilled acid everywhere. I still need to clean this poor thing before using it (I cleaned most of it, but not everything). Hopefully the motherboard haven't been touched (when i got it, it was already too late. Well, I won't complain, I got it for free).

I do not own the Apple II on the pic (I wish I did).

I don't have any retro computers at my disposal currently (I have an iMac G3 in Bondi Blue at my parents') but have an extensive classic Mac emulation setup. Mini vMac for all software prior to and including Mac OS 6, Basilisk II for Mac OS 7 (the first emulator I set up), and SheepShaver for Mac OS 8 and 9.

I am a huge fan of classic Mac games from the mid 80s to the late 90s. A month or so ago I dumped a large number of screenshots from all the games I had at my disposal, I could dump them all here if anyone is interested though I don't want to derail the thread entirely.

I got an Atari 800 with some games last year for a good price. I've only hooked it up once though, even after buying some diskettes for save files.

I collected all of my Mac game screenshots in one place and there are 125 images. Hoo boy.

Anyway I will start dumping now, in alphabetical order. See the filename for the name of each game the screenshot was taken from.

Thanks, glad to hear it was worthwhile. My Mac gaming experience was mostly from going to my grandma's house, she had some variant of the Macintosh II (pic related, though it might have been a Performa) which she had all my life and then got an iMac G3 in 1999. Since then, built up:
C64, VIC-20
CoCo2 & 3
TI-99/4A
Atari 800XL
NEC PC-8201a (TRS80 Model 100 clone) and a couple of smaller portable computers of questionable utility.

In case you want to upgrade it, some people sell a kit to replace floppy drive with removable flash media. It's not very expensive, but unfortunately requires hacking the case a bit. I think there's also some alternative you just plug directly on motherboard (between a chip and its socket) or maybe even something to upgrade the trapdoor thing to 8 megs. Can't remember all the details, just stuff I read on eab.abime.net last year. Unfortunately my Amiga is long since gone, so just emulate with UAE now...

For those who might wonder, the emulator display DOESN'T represent what is in the real computer's frame buffer. In the frame buffer, there are black strips so the picture don't get dis-formed when displayed on the 4:3 monitor. The 1200 is the best model to start with nowadays as it's the easiest to communicate with from a PC. The 500 is something to get later, when you'll be able to recreate your own floppies, or if you want to invest in a floppy drive emulator. Please, if you replace your A500 floppy unit with an HxC, don't trash the drive, keep it or sell it if you don't need it, but please don't trash it, they're not so easy to find, and for all those people who get a hard-on for old machines that are untouched, it's pretty useful to have spare drives.
Also, on a 1200, the PAL or NTSC signal is set software-side.

First because it was a CISC architecture, and Motorola along with other CPU manufacturer though that RISC CPUs will be the big deal of the new century, so they wanted to concentrate all their efforts in these new architectures.
And the other reason is because they released the 68060 too late, at a price too high (compared to the previous 680x0 CPUs) and at a clock speed too low (no 90MHz 68060 in 1994 was a BIG mistake) while the Pentium had already some advantages with a better implementation of the super-scalar architecture.

But you're right, the Amstrad CPC 6128is a really good machine.

Get a 1040ST

I had the standard ST and a STFM, which you could plug into CRT TVs.

But if you're gonna use 16 bit atari computers, you might as well use the proper monitor

Get one of these (SC1224). Low resolution aside, it's the best monitor I ever saw.

The 5200 and the entire trainwreck that was Atari's home division is what happens when an out-of-touch movie studio gets their fingers into the operations of a video game publisher/manufacturer.

They had a portable with holographic visuals around 1977 that they axed because they were worried it would cannibalize sales of the VCS, not understanding that being a portable, it would probably go for Coleco's or Mattel's market. It also cost them one of their best engineers.

遊撃手: THE MAGAZINE OF COMPUTER GAMING WORLD
http://www.gamesetwatch.com/2008/02/column_game_mag_weaseling_the_8.php

>You know how people sometimes whine that there's no video-game equivalent to Roger Ebert or Lester Bangs, no truly unique-sounding game pundit whose views are trusted and influential in a way that transcends whatever publication they're written for? Yugekishu (which is Japanese for "shortstop," as in the baseball position) was an attempt to attract the wannabe Eberts of video games and gather their longform reviews and commentaries into a single magazine, one meant for hardcore gamers and industry insiders. In 1984, I remind you.

When my Dad was a student at Whoopie Tech, I got to play Lunar Lander with a light-pen, on an oscilloscope screen. I was hooked.

I'd go to work with my Dad at times, I would play Adventure, or Rogue. If I got bored enough, I'd make some funny ASCII Cows.

When I was 8, my parents bought a Royal Guards pinball machine.

At home there was Atari. Then the 5200. My Dad got a Tempest machine for $150 in like '83.

Then I got into the friutbox IIe, Commode, Trash-80, etc.

Then NES came out, changed my attention.

In '91 I went to the PC. Played lots of stuff. Sim City 20k was awesome. Blake Stone. Wordtris, BBS doors.

I went back to console with the N64. Been with the console since.

The IIGS is mainly a curiosity, as it had an extremely short lifespan, it's curious capabilities (2.8MHz CPU for a late 80s GUI-based computer? Really?). The analogy with the SNES vs Megadrive is a good analogy: look at how the developers had to take advantage of the co-processors in order to allow the SNES to have shoot em ups that run at the same speed as the one on Megadrive.
The problem here is that this time, it's the Amiga that has a bunch of co-processors while the Apple IIGS only have it's 65c816.
I think it would have been simply better if they used something else instead of the 65c816 and just added a 6502 on a compatibility board.

Some people, even on NeoGaf what to do homebrew for this, when I always want new game for older hardware, the X1 is not that popular, the X68000 has more power and has alot more fans, if it has to be a 8-bit computer, let it be a PC88/PC88-VA and/or a MSX, at least a good amount people have said computers unlike the X1 when the easiest model to find is the one with the built in PC Engine (the X68000 needed this, not the X1).

It's weird that NEC allowed their competitor to build it at all.

>People had a PC-88VA? I thought it was another blundered 16 bit version of a 8 bit computer ike the MSX-TurboR or the Apple IIGS.

It is.

>It's weird that NEC allowed their competitor to build it at all.

It's because Hudson developed the PC Engine with NEC (The PC Engine CPU was designed by Hudson, based on the MOS6502, along the HuCard cartridge). At the time, Hudson was working with Sharp too (they made the BASIC interpret for the X1), so it's no surprise if Hudson allowed Sharp to use their CPU and cartridges to make a system compatible with the PC Engine.

>>1671209
Like the Turbo-R, I said the VA so that homebrewers can work with more freedom like using the MMC5 chip with 32KB of extra ram in both the work & video ram banks with the Namco 163 chip for sound (cutting off the MMC5's sound bus) on a NES game.

Plus, you always need a emulated release on newer systems like the Wii U, PS4, XBox One, 3DS & Vita.

>Apple IIGS
I will not call that to much of a blunder, Nintendo made Super NES games with it.

>It's weird that NEC allowed their competitor to build it at all.
Hudson made the PC Engine, NEC just sold it as they were also making the DPS chip series for Nintendo at this time as well.

The Master System and the Game Gear have the same CPU, look how good they are at graphic stuff.
The MSX line have the same CPU, look how the MSX2 and 2+ are good at graphic stuff.

I've participated in a few J-PC threads, they quickly descend into hentai game screenshots (not that I consider that to be a bad thing).

Western PC threads (at least for Sinclair, Atari, Commodore and Amstrad machines) tend to get trolled early by console kids. They tend to avoid doing that in the J-PC threads, and I didn't notice any in this thread.

Some computers don't fit either category completely either, like the MSX. They were plenty popular in the Netherlands, France, Italy and Spanish speaking territories, all of which made native software.

I kind of like the idea of keeping east and west together, but I'm not going to be upset at several separate threads.

I'd like to give MSX stuff the attention it needs, since a lot of the games on it get overlooked in favor of Kojima's. It's worth noting that WOOMB, the site that sold translations of MSX games legally, was a Dutch operation; I wonder if anyone from The Netherlands would frequent said thread.

But yeah, the biggest annoyance is when people look at NEC PCs and think they're only good for eroge and light adventure fluff. Knowing that a lot of the pixel art in those games is digitally scanned, the only things I find impressive about them are the abundance of hourglass figures and how effective dithering is in bringing color. The PC-88 actually had a lot more CRPGs, strategy titles, and Sierra-inspired adventure games relative to the amount of h-games on the PC-98. So I'll encourage people to give that stuff a look, it's not as though they can't read the text in those games as well as with something from Elf.

Many of the games are better played on the PC-98 because they require less disks and have higher resolution text.

The PC-88 had about 1000 games, maybe a fifth of them eroge.
The PC-98 had an estimated 5000 games, less than half of them eroge.
