I'd love to be at one of the marketing meetings when these games were being evaluated by the game companies.

I can imagine a group of suit wearing office workers sitting at a round table, staring drearily at a large print of the Japanese cover art plastered on the board. One of the workers pulls down a silk cloth from the board, unveiling an even larger print of the newly designed American cover art. Everyone stands up in unison, applauding the new design, some of them misty-eyed. Meanwhile, right outside one of the windows, an American flag can be seen flapping vigorously in the wind, along with the boom and crackle of fireworks being set off in the distance.

These japanese covers are better because they were often drawn and designed by someone who worked on the actual game. It's why they actually look like them. Simple stuff. That being said, American covers of games made in the USA are generally good as well.

Okay, and who are you?

That's funny because small development teams often take on lots of roles. Why do you think the team is so small? It's a top notch team that was put together for the sole duty of completing the task. I read something about this a while ago - I think it was a Tom Kalinske interview (SEGA CEO during the "sega does what nintendon't" years).

Basically, back in the early 90s, gaming had relatively little market penetration. You didn't have everyone knowing what Call of Duty is and so. You didn't have so many review sites, youtube, etc., only a handful of gaming magazines and the TV ads.

People just didn't knew what games were good or not, other than a select few hot-seller titles where word-of-mouth was big enough. They were actually buying things based on the covers instead, because when they went into toys'r'us, that was the only thing to decide upon which games were good or not. Often they bought games based on just the cover. So having a motherfucking rad cover often did help.

Also, you have to remember that back in the 90s, especially the early part, anime had very little presence too. The style as a whole was just not taken as granted.

With that context in mind, a cover with a gun-wielding angry bikini babe surrounded by GLADIATORS AND A PIRATE SHIP AND EXPLODING PLANES AND A MOTHERFUCKING PTERODACTYL would be very popular. A bug-eyed bikini babe running on an ice field with something blue/green behind it, not so much.

It was all about appealing for the market, you know.

It's funny how weebs view anime as some radical artform that westerners just didn't "get" in the 80s and 90s. The fact is it just didn't stand out at all.

I grew up with Voltron and Speed Racer and there was nothing distinctive about them except for the fact that I realized in retrospect that they were clearly Japanese. They didn't, and still don't, look that much different than American shows like Thundercats or G.I. Joe or Masters of the Universe, especially compared to cartoons that did have radically unique art styles.

Unique character design has always been a constant in American cartoons and in the Nickelodeon/MTV era it had just begun bordering on bizarre. The thought that anybody would think Time Gal was "too weird" for American children is laughable. These kids were collecting Garbage Pail Kids cards. Try selling those to Japanese children.

The fact is that video games just weren't marketed in the US with ANY cartoon-style illustrations AT ALL. Japanese or otherwise. Sci-Fi/fantasy are niche genres in the US, so it makes sense that those games were marketed the same way as novels and tabletop games of the same genre, and it probably worked wonders. A cheesy animation cell of Link wouldn't capture the imagination of a kid playing D&D and reading LotR the same way a cool picture of sword and a shield would.

>> No.1599652

>>1599170
I think the bigger issue is that publishers thought Japanese covers looked "too cute" for American audiences. Look at Sonic. His American redesign full of edgy 'tude was an excellent contrast to Mario's wholesome cuteness, and, I think, a contributing factor to the game's success. To this day localization teams add subtle touches to Japanese covers to make them look more hardcore. Even freaking Kirby has been subject to this for years.

Well, GI Joe and Thundercats were animated in Japan.(Toei and Pacific Animation Corporation respectively), but Masters of the Universe?

You honestly didn't see the difference in style between MOTU and the style found in most anime of the time?

Also, if you think "true" anime didn't stick out in the 80s, you should probably do a bit of research on a little title known as "Robotech".

Man, this fucking box art
>The original Japanese cover art to Dead Dance/Tuff E Nuff is taken from an issue cover of the UK gaming magazine Computer and Video Games. CVG created the artwork for their preview feature as there was none available at the time. Jaleco were so impressed with the design, they asked CVG to make it the official artwork for the game. It appears on the Japanese and European versions of the game. Jaleco USA decided to use their own box art instead for the American release which is often considered to be one of the worst designs for a video game of all time. It can be seen in the first level of the original arcade version of Jaleco's Game Tengoku.

Here's a pic from said game. The guys at Jaleco must have thought it was hilarious.

Jaleco USA sure had some funny ideas about how to market their games:

The Japanese cover is just what appears an animation cell from some random cartoon I've never seen and don't know anything about. It's marketed towards somebody who's a fan of the character and fuck everybody else. Why should I care?

On the American cover, I see bloodthirsty dinosaurs, exploding WWII fighters, a burning pirate ship and dueling Spartan warriors. It's obvious that this is a game about a woman travelling through time, across the world, and kicking ass. That swirling background must be a time portal. The cover has captured my imagination and if the image was something that appealed to me I might buy the game.

If I was a weeb who'd buy the game on the strength of Generic Anime Girl #313 alone, I still to have to choose between other games on the shelf featuring Generic Anime Girls #1-312.

It's just the same game with different sprites, though. That happened a lot when it came to other games localized in the west, so I'd say it counts.

There's a development retrospective by some of the original team that talks about all the changes they had to do for the Japanese release. iirc, the music composer had to redo all the music in like, a week.

'Merican here...

Some other 'Mericans just reminiscing about the World Trade Center. I dunno, it's like some of us just get weirded out whenever they see old pictures or illustrations of it. Some other 'Mericans just have to make reference to it; they can't help it for whatever reason.

The original artwork for Yuri's Revenge had some famous landscape in the backgrounds being trashed, that included the Manhattan skyscape, WTC included. They had to change the artwork and remove those backgrounds before production.
