I miss these rumors.

But Mew and Arceus are both easily available in their respective games.

Wasn't the real mew cheat only discovered years after most people lost interest in red and blue?

The pause glitch in the trainer fight close to vermilion, right?
Either way mew was avaialable through gameshark codes much earlier than that.

Well it goes without saying you could get mew from hacking the game. You can get anything that was programmed into the game from a gameshark.

But without an external device to change the games code, then there was no known way to get mew other than from Nintendo or a trade.

/vp/ here

you both don't have any idea, the mew glitch was discovered not long after red and green came out in japan with modest sales and the discovery of the pokemon sky rocketed the popularity of the games. Gameshark didn't come out after so many years later

The actual method of the mew glitch wasn't understood or documented until 2003, although other unknown glitches led to mew appearing in some player's games in early Japanese versions. It is possible that some people may have accidentally triggered the mew glitch we know today, or it is possible that different events led to the exposure of mew.

However, it is true that the "legend" of mew led to increased success for the franchise. After Nintendo acknowledged that the rumors of mew being a playable pokemon were true and began to schedule the now famous "events," the games received a noticeable bump in popularity.

Oh I thought the date applied for all games

For console games, the cut-off applies to the console's date of release, not the game's date of release. FFIX, though released after /vr/'s cut-off, is /vr/ because the Playstation was released before /vr/'s cut-off.
The cut-off applies to the release date for arcade games, pinball machines and computer games directly, however. The only exception to this rule is that Dreamcast was released after /vr/'s cut-off but is still allowed here due to its relatively short lifespan.

> The only exception to this rule is that Dreamcast was released after /vr/'s cut-off but is still allowed here due to its relatively short lifespan
But that's not true, Dreamcast was released in 1999 which is firmly within the acceptable date range.

The Dreamcast was originally banned because it was perceived to be a contemporary of other non-/vr/ consoles released in the early 2000s, until common sense and good evidence finally put that misconception to rest. The dreamcast was off the market before the xbox was even released, etc. etc.

Yeah, pretty much.

There's a glitch that lets you catch Mew without using a game shark, and it was discovered about five years after anyone would have given a shit.

How the hell do you glitch Arceus? I'm aware of the trick for Mew and Darkrai.

I used to give them out at school along with other starters.

Sometimes kids would give me cold pizza or chocolate milk as thanks, but I did it for free because I was nice.

I cloned them for pokemon cards, then I sold the pokemon cards at my local game store for cash and bought vidya.

Eventually pokemon was banned at my school because parents were complaining that their kids were losing all their cards in trades and then crying about it later. Plus a ton of its stopped doing anything but playing/trading pokemon during breaks.
