Oldschool hentai games? Recently the art style and retroness of the games has been appealing to me and I was wondering what there is to try that's been translated?

That depends on the specific title. There are eroge of a large variety of genres, not everything was an adventure like nowadays.

As for translated titles:
Rance series is a good start for classic ero RPG.
Pia Carrot and True Love for dating sims.
Yu-No for point and click adventrues.

It's true, it's still a really good adventure game though. To be honest I'd rather it wasn't an hentai game so people could take it more seriously, it really deserves way more attention than it got. Also that epilogue fucking brings the whole game down.

It may have been nice if they included an option to skip the h-scenes like in the Saturn version. Some of them were ridiculously out of place and detracted from the rest of the game.

>> No.1572125

>>1571785
Well I didn't mind them enough to want to skip them. What I mean is, from the get-go I wish this project didn't start as an hentai game, I wish Hiroyuki Kanno would have gone "legit" game designer and make a proper adventure game instead of trying to pander to horny otakus. The best parts in the game were definitely not of sexual nature, although the flirtatious nature of the main character did lead to some pretty funny dialogues.
I'm pretty sure that Kanno respected eroge as a proper medium, but still he deserved better, he should have been making proper adventure games. But still I don't know the fellow, maybe he was doing exactly what he wanted. RIP

Everybody go here and play Divi-dead. Sure the translation of the sex scenes are hilarious but otherwise it is pretty gosh darn sweet.

Almost all its plot twists have this great fore-shadowing to them and the sex scenes themselves just contribute to this creepy occult atmosphere that it just revels in. Might be a bit too much clicking to find the place where story events will trigger though.

>> No.1576192

If you're interested in retro eroge I recommend getting into the PC98 as that's the platform were most of them were released on and which defined the styles with its technical limitations. Only a small number of titles are translated but there are plenty of games that don't require Japanese such as Night Slave.
There are several site with lists and descriptions of the games.
The PC88 is interesting for the even older school but is less documented

It's effectively one story, it's the whole thing that takes 30-50 hours including the prologue and epilogue.
You regularly have to jump back and pick a different option but your inventory remains the same.
The worst case if you start with a route that can't be completed without an item from another so you either have to bind a save crystal for a long time or repeat the whole route at a later point.
You can hold CTR to skip through dialogs to speed things up when you already heard them.

I'm not a fan either but why would you care if some people don't take it seriously or find it problematic if it has sexual content in it? In non-nukige games the ero is just there to grab some attention, just like action scenes; it's not really an end. The obstacle here is a cultural one.

Also in general ADV/VNs/eroge don't get a lot of attention compared to other things. While it may be true that some will be put off by the sexual content, I don't think it's the only reason, I wonder if it has to do with reading.

What you're saying is absolutely right, there is no inherent problem with it, however there comes some situations where the sex just feels shoehorned in, to the detriment of the story and the characters' motivations. Luckily Yu-No tackles this issue very well and there's very few situations where it just feels forced down the player just as a reward system or to force an ending/closure. There are segments where you can't help but sigh at "oh, she craves your dick as well huh, well that's interesting" and you roll your eyes a bit, knowing full well that you're playing an eroge.
To be pretty clear though I'm not coming down on the eroge genre, this sort of shit has its place, but I just get the feeling that Yu-No would be a better game if its initial planning didn't involve making an eroge, and just making an adventure game that might have some sex scenes, instead of an eroge that forces to fuck every single female character that you talk to more than 5 minutes with.

I'm just being nitpicky though, it's a great game and I recommend everyone playing it, regardless of your feelings towards the genre.

>> No.1580447

>and just making an adventure game that might have some sex scenes, instead of an eroge that forces to fuck every single female character that you talk to more than 5 minutes with

I don't think this is the case with YU-NO or the majority of scenarioge; or in other words, the ones not focused on sex.
You can check out this interview as an example of creating an eroge.

But I agree that some sex scenes might seem out of place.

The PC-98's limited colors and heavy dithering give those games a washed out, antique look, like hand drawn cell animation. That's where the appeal comes from.

Divi Dead was made by C's Ware, which I think had some popularity from Eve Burst Error, so it probably isn't super obscure.

But yeah, most of the US localized VNs at that time wasn't considered great... e.g True Love was one of those games that Japan just saw as being a shitty ripoff of better games.

Yes, not that many, and I think Rance is the only one that has been on the market for 20+ years and they are still making games. I think Miyazaki was talking about how the industry became made up of people who liked the pandering shit and kept running with it. He was also commenting how many characters today don't resemble actual people, even by cartoon standards or some shit.

I think the best way to have fanservice is by having actual content backing it. To the point where the content beats the fanservice at being interesting.

Plenty of older anime had great-looking characters of all sexes. Even my normalfag friends would tell me how much of a hot slut Bulma was. I don't think it's an otaku thing, but when it became exclusively about that... Yeah.

For an example of a good fanservicey video game, see Skullgirls. It's one of the best fighting games I've ever had. People stigmatize it and are pleasantly surprised when they actually play it.

My main problem is that it uses renewal to work as seen in pic related.
I would love it if they could make the engine use everything from the original but add voices from renewal, it'd be an ultimate version.
Anyway, doesn't any compatibiliy mode work for the original? If not, then I guess I'll play it online.

But, don't get me wrong, I just said that they aren't so focused in realism as, for example, Dostoevsky or Tolstoy. You can get realism with recent works of fiction in this industry. The problem is that they aren't centered on it, in other words, they are willing to sacrifice these aspects to create other situations that aren't so believable, in order to entertain the reader/player (eg., Harem or Shounen fights, or common tropes in RPGs). Also you have to take into account that they want to sell too. So if some shit sells they will keep making it.
This is just my opinion, though.

>You can have realistic characters in a world with magic and unicorns and shit.
This.

Take Hamlet, for example. It's been adapted so many times through so many stories because it's a human story that people get.

As much as people want to believe, you can't emphasize with a fox lizard space otherkin banging robot harems. Characterization is defining the empathy, and when you don't have a grasp on what you're trying to get people to emphasize, you're taking shots in the dark and even if it works, people will say it was lazy and generic.

You guys have no idea how invested I am into visual novels. It's so Japan that it inverts into itself and becomes anti-Japan. Japan is great for fine tuning copycats, but they're not innovators. They take ideas and products and improve them. Here, you have a completely untouched medium that is literally ripe for today, it's visual, it's interactive, very touch screen capable, and what do they do?

Waifu simulators. Waifu simulators that are overpriced because the only way to justify the industry itself is to mark up the price for a niche market to support the next endeavor.

They made something new, decades ago, and I think Type Moon was the only one that took full advantage on licensing opportunities. Excellent copycats, not so much innovators.

You can if you learn about them. You get to know them as the writer develops the character. It all depends on him doing a good job; if he's good, you'll feel exactly how he wants you to feel about the character. If he's better, people will feel in a multitude of ways because the character is actually open to interpretation.

Eve Burst Error is good, but awkward in a few spots. You have to use the "dual souls system" or whatever of playing parts of the game as the guy and some as the gril; the game will eventually stonewall you if you go too far as either. Some humor that didn't translate was replaced with topical jokes about the Clintons during the Lewinsky scandal; expect a few awful clunkers about Lina Tripp's nose. There is no sex whatsoever (it was clean enough even for a DreamCast release).

Despite the flaws, the game presents a good murder mystery with good pacing. One of the better VNs I've played.

I almost didn't get what you're saying until it clicked. It's almost not Hollywood's fault, the themes and emotions are just that low level

>You can if you learn about them.
>It all depends on him doing a good job
There's some miscommunication here, mostly because I was trying to condense so many things into few sentences that I didn't explain in fear of writing more than I already did, and making a mess. My point was to compliment the other guy in that when anime creators just create anime to act like other anime instead of people, it loses depth. It's practically fan fiction tier, in that you're not creating characters, you're borrowing caricatures or entire characters point blank in the case of actual fan fiction, and using them as a template. It's more of a plot device than a character, and that works and gets an excuse in games because you are the plot device, you are the one making the game go forward so the story is supplemental, but everything else, it feels forced, which is why you often hear some critic saying something has forced drama, that's when it's particularly getting to that shitty threshold.

Empathy is what drives characters, and it's people that live it in its raw form, not other anime characters, they are only one interpretation of one design for a particular story, and that is a terrible base to start creating another character with an entire different story for. It's the story writing the characters, rather than the characters writing the story. For the latter, think Ghibli movies, no surprise there.

Ergo, you can't emphasize with fox lizard space otherkin banging robot harems. Not that it can't be done, but I picked an outlandish example to illustrate the mindset of the bad writing, that is to just have an idea for the sake of it rather than a purpose.

And that is why Arceuid is best girl thank you for your time.

Not for good reason, he is just the easiest guy for casual (not using the in a derogatory way) anime viewers like movie critics to know after he won an oscar for Spirited Away. If anyone should be named the Walt Disney of Japan, it is Osamu Tezuka whose body of work dwarfs Miyazaki by a long mile. The man is the main reason the medium evolved after World War II. Nearly every '60s and '70s manga owed their designs and inspiration from Tezuka. Tezuka himself admired Walt Disney so much, all his early work apes or tries to be like Disney. The guy loved his craft. He is called God of manga in Japan, a title that makes him more worthy of the Walt Disney comparison than Miyazaki.

Finished Divi-dead, I got the asura ending which after googling I've found out is the 'lame' ending (probably because it's a happy ending) I had no idea what was going on though, but it was good. Playing nocturnal illusion and liking it too.

So I was puttering around on here with some of the games and I've been going through May Club and May Club DX. When I try to follow Satomi's route in DX I find the girl in pic related. Her entire route is untranslated. The only thing I have found anywhere is this entry here with her name http://www.animecharactersdatabase.com/character.php?id=8206 Maina Ichijou. Does anyone know anything about this character or her route?

Unlike the other ones, Nigh Life was marketed as an application for married couples, you can even input your partner menstrual cycle and it will calculate the "safe days". You can look at the menu screen, the safe day calculation is the first option.

May Club is ALMOST a guide-only game.
Playing it without a guide is a cruel experience. You pretty much need to meet girls repeatedly to woo them, the choices are rare and obvious.

The problem is knowing how to find them. You have limited cards and 3 time slots to visit the Club. It's slightly more obvious with some of the girls but it's still pretty cryptic.
I suggest doing a single blind playthrough to get thoroughly frustrated, try to meet as many girls as possible. And then find a calendar guide and look up how to follow one of the girls.
I'm afraid I can't remember if there were some generic rules to know, since a hint would be better than just getting told. Oh well.
It still has a couple of pretty fun routes that play on the early internet "online dating" common places.
