What is the equivalent 2D genre for hack n' slash, if there is any? I would like to play some 2D game where you constantly walk forward beating people up like there's no tomorrow. Bonus points if it has a good attack upgrade system. Pic very much related.

I STILL don't understand what this damn "genre" is actually supposed to be. Last time I heard it referenced some idiot was calling Gauntlet Legends one of all things.

Mindlessly button mashing action and walking forward.
although that's only on easy level. God of war is pretty hard if you go for the hardest mode.
It's an alternate name for beat 'em up. Don't think too much about it.

Kind of, but beat'em ups tend to focus on bare handed combat, while hack and slashs are more weaponised.

This shit used to be much simpler. Even fighting games like Virtua Fighter got classed as Beat 'em ups by Gamesmaster and co. when I was a kid.

Despite trying to stick to using simple genre classes, one of my transgressions from since around gen 6, is using the term Hack 'n' Slash to describe games like Gauntlet, Diablo, Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance, Champions of Norath, etc.

To me Streets of Rage, Comix Zone, Devil May Cry, God of War, Godhand, etc. are all beat 'em ups. I understand what games people are talking about when they say spectacle fighter, or character action, but I'm not conditioned to use those terms naturally yet.

>> No.1585249

hack n slash games are just beat em ups that use some sort of melee weapon. Its not really a different genre. Thats like saying soul caliber and street fighter are completly different genres.

The main difference between a 2d beat em up (final fight, dnd world) is the 2d ones have a greater emphasis on crowd control and proper positioning while the 3d ones are about mashing out combos and pressing a dodge/block button when an enemy does any action

so does final fight change its genre from beat em up to hack n slash if I pick up a sword?

does devil may cry change its genre from hack n slash to beat em up if I put on Efrete (the punching weapon) instead of using alastar?

Nah man. Golden Axe, TMNT IV, hell, even Castle Crashers, they're all beat-em ups. The name just describes a style of gameplay.

It's called a beat'em up. If you want a sword-themed beat'em, play Golden Axe. Whether it's a sword or knuckled does not affect the genre at all, though.

Most of the games in the genre are on the arcades. Some of the top ones that feature weapons are the two Capcom D&D games - Dungeons and Dragons Shadow over Mystara in particular, which has been remade for PC just recently, complete with 4 player co-op internet play and all.

If he didn't, well yeah Diablo is the epitome of hack n' slash, and like with >>1585547 suggestions, most ARPGs would fit the bill

Like a leveling up combat system or something along those lines. That's basically what differs beat'em ups from hack n' slashes to me, although many people on this thread group them together.

throw rocks at me, but the Souls game look like beat em ups to me, it may have character creation and stats, but I don't see much role playing in it, it is an action game in which you beat enemies with medieval fantasy weapons, like golden axe.

>> No.1591854

>>1591836
You can't just grab any weapon you like and start wailing on enemies. In order to get the most (or any progress at all) you have to manage your characters stats and items and resources. Much more so than a typical "save some meter for the boss section" style of resource management.

Consider my rock thrown.
