1579356 No.1579356[DELETED]  [Reply] [Original]

Not sure if we ever had a thread for this type of thing but let's try it:
/vr/ High Scores!
How to Play:
Post a photo of a game you played via screenshot from an emulator, photo taken from your TV, or create a video posting it on to YouTube or creating a webm/gif of your high score of whatever game you choose. If you see a post of a game (for example Tetris) and you think you can beat that persons score, reply with a photo/video/etc. of your high score, this may lead to a chain of reply's towards that particular game until people give in leaving the person with the highest score the "winner". So pretty much a friendly competition thread of your favorite game with other folks.
Rules:
1.NO SAVE STATES, while we are not able to make sure whether or not someone uses save states all I can say is please be honest with your scores. Don't be a douche.
2.No bitching/arguing, keep it friendly
3.If you're going to take a photo of your TV or make a video, please make the image clear enough to check your scores or otherwise what's the point of posting.
4.If the game you're playing doesn't have a scoring system, but rather a timer à la speed running, you must take a photo of your record time. If the game doesn't have an in game timer, use a timer via your computer and post the time along with the game you're playing. This requires you to start the time once "game play" technically starts so starting time at the menu screen is not necessary; If you beat a game and there is no further game play please stop your timer, this is so you don't have to sit through cut scenes and credits to officially call your time for a game. If you're going to use a timer, please tell people from where you started and ended the timer.
5.Have fun

are you the Tetris attack guy? I never played the game but judging from the gif you're really good. As it's stated in the op it can be any game so you don't compare different games to each other, you're fine. However if you're the Tetris guy Just you wait, I'm not done with you yet. I'm not at home right now but once I get my emulator started and get a little practice in, you're toast.

What the? I got caught off guard by levels increasing after 50 instead of 100 lines. Are there two different versions of GB Tetris? On my actual cartridge (which is like 25 years old now) levels increase every 10 lines, so you hit level 10 at 100 if you start on 9. I started gaining levels at 50 on this emulator... what's going on here?

>> No.1585237

>>1585209
Did you start on level 9? That's going to make it tough to compare our scores.

>> No.1585284

>>1585237
Should always start on level 9 if you're going for score though... I didn't even notice you guys were both starting on 0. Why?

>> No.1585286

>>1585284
No real reason I guess. That's not really true though, you can get easier points on your way up to level 9.

>> No.1585292

>>1585286
You get more points the higher your level is, and once you hit around level 13 or so it gets very hard to land tetrises, so you want to maximize the amount of time you're at level 9, which, on the right ROM, would be the entire first 99 levels. You get 12k pts per tetris at level 9.

>> No.1585293

>>1585292
>first 99 levels
I meant to say first 99 lines, oops. Optimally you want as many of those first 99 to be tetrises.

>> No.1585297

>>1585293
It sounds like you agree that you should start on level 0 then.

>> No.1585303

>>1585297
No that would be silly, why would you put yourself at a disadvantage while simultaneously playing on a setting so boring that the first ~5-10 minutes of each run give virtually no score?

>> No.1585305

>>1585303
You're not explaining something right here then. The game doesn't sit at level 9 for 100 lines when you start at level 9, it moves up to level 10 at what seems the be the same speed as when you get to level 9 starting at level 0.

>> No.1585312

>>1585305
It shouldn't be. If you start at 9 you should be at level 9 until you hit 100 lines, when it moves to level 10, then level 11 @ 110, level 12 @ 120, and so on, maxing out at level 20 @ 200.

For whatever reason, the ROM I downloaded starts escalating to level 10 at line 50, but this shouldn't be the case. My cart, as well as every youtube video of GB tetris, works the way I first described. A googled wiki page also confirms this to be the case
>when the player line clear (startLevel * 10 + 10), the level advances by 1. After this, the level advances by 1 for every 10 lines
I'm really curious what the hell is causing this. You may be experiencing the same thing I am, judging by your post?

I just found out what's up. Apparently we're playing on v1.0, which was a very limited Japan-only production of the game. The A-Type music is different than normal (didn't notice cause I had it muted) and lines/levels are different. Crazy. I never knew about this even though I have probably thousands of hours on this game.

Hah, I can't believe I didn't notice that either. I thought one of the Tetris themes seemed to be missing. Why is it labeled the (World) version then? Can't Emuparadise get their names right? Maybe that would explain why this version feels a bit unfair too.

Okay it seems Tetris (World) Rev A is the version we all remember playing.

>> No.1585349

>>1585343
Yeah. Also I think I thought it was 50 lines instead of 20 because 12-13 is when it starts getting really noticeably hard to keep up with so I glanced at my lines and saw 50 and thought "what the shit!?". Ill post some scores on a normal ROM some other time maybe.
