The thing that I love about modern day RPGs -- especially, for example, Fallout (3 & New Vegas) -- is not only their dense and complex universes, but also how they give you a lot of freedom in how you play.
You can be the saviour of humanity, you can be Satan incarnate, or you can be somewhere in the middle; it's all up to you.
It feels really awesome to know that the complexity of your character is only limited by your imagination,
and also to know that your decisions will influence the game in serious, meaningful ways.
This adds an incredible depth to the game, and really makes me want to keep playing.

Are there any retro RPGs like this?
What are some of your favorites?

there are some fantastic rpgs in retro. see:

>chrono trigger
>final fantasy
>super mario rpg
>earthbound

they're not the same "kind" of rpg as fallout, that kind of game is a recent thing, but they're some of the best if not THE best games ever.

A good portion of Western-developed RPGs are like this. Look into the Infinity Engine games such as Baldur's Gate. If you want to go back even earlier, there are plenty of DOS-based WRPGs like Ultima and Wasteland.

Uh, OP is asking about RPGs that are really open ended and let you choose your own ethos. None of those games are like that. JRPGs in general tend to restrict the player to a specific moral compass.

"Its" is the possessive of "it".
"It's" is a contraction of "it is".

>I just started Planescape: Torment and it's really been living up to it's reputation, for me. If you don't mind reading and using your imagination to complete the scene details depicted in the conversations, it's well worth the time. And even though you can't create your own character and have to play as the nameless one, he's kind of a blank slate that you color in with you actions. Damn cool game.
