Underrated Squaresoft games

>> No.1571598

But Threads of Fate is well liked and got good reviews. If anything, it's slightly overrated like most of Square's playstation library.

it has great texturing

that's pretty much it

Ooh this is a good place to ask for help instead of starting a new thread. I have $20 to spend on classic JRPG on psn/ I want to grind and get lost in some dungeons. Right now I'm looking at Grandia, Suikoden, Vagrant Story and Xenogears. It will be my first time through any of them. Could anyone who cares point me in the right direction?

Out of those you've mentioned, Vagrant Story fits the bill the closest, but it's still not quite it. Get Wizardry

Vagrant Story is kinda.... one big dungeon, there isn't really any respite or a hub to work from.

Of course grinding in Vagrant Story also doesn't work very well either.

I haven't played those, but I heard from a friend Xenogears is excellent, but I don't know if its what you're looking for

>> No.1572318

>>1572281
Vagrant Story is what I would pick, but Suikoden is not a bad choice and it is better to spend $20 on it than trying to find a copy of that for the PS1

Xenogears is an anime in JRPG clothing. The actual "game" part is a rather primitive and easy JRPG with little to do. A major part of the game are cutscenes.

That's interesting. Sort of a Phantasy Star/ Etrian Odyssea? I would never have checked that out. Going to youtube to investigate. Thanks

Strange how people always remember the japanese dungeon crawlers and never the western originals that actually spawned and popularized the genre in the first place

>suikoden, beyond the beyond, soulblade, jackie chan stuntmaster, medievil 2 all in basically mint condition

Kinda shit for soulblade because its dirt cheap, but it rounds the price down for everything else.

It was a sequel sure, but its not cool to shit on everything that got accomplished in Trigger just for the sake of it.

Every time I see a post like this, I point to Satchbag's video, which opened my eyes about a lot of things.

Do you seriously expect me to watch a 16 minute video of a game I didn't like?

Chrono Cross was terrible. It tried to be different but every thing it tried was done terribly. The magic system, the huge plethora of characters, the story was a fucking mess. It has zero link to Chrono Trigger until the last quarter of the game.

They called it Chrono Cross to garner favor with fans, and thats dirty as shit. They could've called it fucking anything else and this game would've been universally panned.

This wasn't really even a good counter-argument.

Suggesting that you don't need all the characters to develop is fine and true, but how does Serge develop when he's the silent protaganist-archetype? Why have 40 other characters if you realistically just wanted to tell a story about Serge and Kid? There is so little focus. Throwing Grinding out was fine, but contrary to what he says, level ups are not based on what you do, they are purely random, in fact you can actually sometimes get fucked over and cap out early, while other times getting much more stats per boss kill. The "do multiple actions per turn" thing being compared to a hack and slash in between is a fucking joke. Its not even comparable, its just a typical JRPG with a different ATB which is what Square's been doing for fucking years.
>Unleash super combo's by filling the entire grid
He acts like this was an easy task. 1 unlucky enemy turn completely breaks your chain and you end up having to push the colour our and try again. He doesn't even mention the horrid finale.

But Chrono, Lucca and Marle were in the first half of the game... weren't they? It's been a while since I've played, but they were definitely on disc one.

I haven't played Cross, but I don't get this logic that a sequel has to have the same characters and be a direct continuation. It's a video game. As long as it has similar gameplay, themes/concepts, and is set in the same universe, that should automatically make it a sequel. If it was meant to be Chrono Trigger 2, it would've been called Chrono Trigger 2. Do you think people whined when Final Fantasy VIII didn't continue where VII left off?

>> No.1572530

Funny but I was really surprised to see Chrono Cross was so unpopular, back then all my friends and I absolutely loved it. Even a pal I met later has the same fond memories of it.

Well, ok. But why did people stop being idiots after that and realize it was no big deal while people are *still* complaining about Cross being a fake sequel?

Honestly? I have no idea. Nobody pissed and moaned about aLttP not being continuation sequel, did they?

>> No.1572562

Zelda isn't really big on story though, so it doesn't much matter in that regard. Besides, it's still Link and Zelda, just "ancestors" despite being the same character.

>> No.1572606

>>1572562
Nope. Not ancestors. Entirely different Hyrule and characters and all that stuff.
And tLoZII was a direct continuation of the the first game. And people were upset it wasn't like the NES Mega Man games where each subsequent addition to the series was just more of the same. Possibly a devil-you-know sort of deal. Dunno.
MM nuked the fridge IV onward. For me, Zelda nuked the fridge from OoT onward. Goddamn did I hate OoT. To be fair, I don't usually like 3D games.

It's been so long since I played Chrono Cross, that I can't even remember half of this worthless cast of characters.

Who the fuck used more than a handful of them each playthrough? Or gave a shit about really any of them?
