I want to like this game. I really do.

But it is so flawed. Disclaimer: the art (and general) style of the game is great. The humour achieves what it tries to do - being an over-the-top adventure space cartoon with silly enemies - and the creative ideas everywhere hit the mark.

But the gameplay, holy hell the gameplay. The slippery controls added with the narrow platforming, the unfocused level design, it's just a mess. It is not fun at all.
Also, the music is kinda wonky at times. It doesn't always fit the level theme.

I am sure there are some anons here who like the games, and I'd like to discuss it and appretiate it more.

I hope you're not talking about "What the heck?", because "Night on the bald mountain" is perfect for a hellish level

That's David Perry for you, awesome visuals, great ideals, but slippery gameplay with weird hit box detection. It's the same problem with Aladdin.

Still a great game IMO, I also thought EWJ2 was better than the first, even on the gameplay department, but they're both classics.

Well, yeah, that's the gist of it. It's a great game when you're a kid and you love seeing lots of crazy stuff going on on the screen, and you don't really have the attention span to appreciate a proper focused gameplay design (I know that was my case). It's pretty much half a dozen different games glued together, and you're lucky if you end up actually enjoying one in three levels. But it was loud, zany, and looked spectacular. We didn't masturbate to character-based roguelikes back then; we liked pressing buttons and seeing shit blow up.

The controls aren't really that bad, though, specially for a time in which mediocrity didn't stop at the line of mere competence like today. Getting accustomed to the inertia and "weight" of such a complex animated character was part of the appeal; problem is, the gameplay shifts don't allow enough practice for your normal contemporary player resilience: you need a lot of burnt 1994 summer afternoons to really appreciate what this game meant for a lot of us.

I still play my Mega-CD special edition every now and then; I've sworn off the second one though; that one was like an overblown parody of the original's patchwork design.

I liked Aladdin quite a lot actually, atleast the SNES version I played. Maybe it was the auto-aimy feel of the animation when jumping on enemy heads that helped, and the fact that it had more linear levels with less small platforms, that covered up the slippery controls. It was more speedrun-friendly, if you want.

They're actually very precise. EJ stops dead in his tracks when you let go of the button.

What you call "unfocused" I call "creative and varied" and "fresh and interesting." I cannot stress it enough that the levels are excellent.
>Also, the music is kinda wonky at times. It doesn't always fit the level theme.
Which levels? And how is this anything other than nitpicking? How are any of your complaints anything other than nitpicks?

And if you're playing the SNES version, then don't. But I think your complaints are just really strange. Maybe come back to it later? The gameplay is good. Perhaps you just were not in the mood, or you had different expectations than what the game actually is.

Agreed that the platforming feels loose and combined with the art style it's hard to tell exactly where you should stand, but I still think you're exaggerating. It's still a good game that just requires some fiddly practice here and there.

Jumping, to some degree, during combat was fiddly, but the punch combos came out fast and furious. The kick has decent pushback and the scepter shoot was fairly quick as well. Only the standing punch was ass, really.

Also, OP, this might seen like a minor thing but you should really play the genesis/megadrive version.

The larger genesis resolution really helps the big sprites, the screen doesn't feel as cramped anymore AND the genesis has one extra level, Intestinal Distress.
There's an even better Sega CD version with a new level and a few new bonus screens.

Uh... they're different games.
We've been through this countless times, I prefer the SNES game because of better controls and level design, but I also enjoyed the Virgin one for the beautiful hand-drawn sprite animations.

A couple months ago, Shinji Mikami (who directed SNES Aladdin) said he likes the Virgin game better, and that he would have bought it back in the day instead of the SNES game, at the same time David Perry (who directed Virgin's aladdin) said he liked the SNES version more and that he would have bought it instead of the Virgin one back in the day, so there you go.

My complaint about the Virgin aladdin is the same as with EWJ, slippery control, weird hitbox detect with the sword, and the final boss is a joke, compared to the awesome screen-sized one in the SNES.
