Why is this game so perfect?

Fantastic game, but it unfortunately falls into my "cannot replay this anymore"

Because world map + exploration + saves + secrets + semi-long game.

That's the main formula in Nintendo to make "critically acclaimed" games in the SNES.

OP here. I'm a huge Super Mario Bros 3 fan. It was definitely my favorite game from my early childhood. It will probably forever be my favorite Mario game.

I've noticed something on 4chan. Many people seem to love one Mario game, and hate the other. Why? I find both of them to be perfect tens. Each game is similar, but has its own style.

It's not exclusive to Mario by any means, just look at any thread about Final Fantasy or Zelda. People like to feel that their opinion is superior to others, it's just kind of how the internet works. It's best not to engage in arguments over which game is "the best", but rather what makes each game good in its own way.

I know /vr/ probably isn't the place to talk about this, but I feel like it had fantastic level design, a perfect difficulty curve, and the addition of challenge modes that highlight how well the stages were designed. Sure, some people bring up the argument that the NSMB series has a multiplayer focus, but I felt NSMBU was decidely single-player focused and better for it. In OP's screenshot you can see what I immediately put me off, level design isn't very good if you put a big canon like that flying out of nowhere in the very first minute of a game.

Super Mario bros 3 is an action game with some exploration. Super Mario World is an exploration game with some action. This may be the one thing that separates people on the two games.

In order to like both games, you have to keep an open mind. Super Mario World is a beautiful game to look at. It has super tight controls, too.

There's not as many power-ups in SMW as in SMB3, but the power-ups fit the levels and gameplay, so that's what matters.

Yoshi's Island is by far my favorite Mario game. I guess it's technically a part of the main series since it was originally dubbed "Super Mario World 2," after all.

I loved Super Mario World as well, but it felt a bit regressive compared to SMB3. The world didn't seem to have quite as many features and themes. It was just one continuous trek through Dinosaur Land, seeing the same enemies and environments. It kind of sucks that they removed all the different power-up suits and themed worlds.

I used to like SMB3 more than SMW but I then realised it was nostalgia goggles. I went back and replayed SMB3 a number of years ago after like... a decade of not touching it and it wasn't anywhere near as good as I remembered. I detested how short many of the levels were. I newly found the thematic worlds needlessly gimmicky. Most of the powerups were either useless (frog suit anywhere other than the water themed world, for example), too rare to matter (hammer and tanuki suits as well as Goomba's shoe [which can't even be used outside of a single stage]) or existed in older games anyway (flower/mushroom).

But hey, if you like SMB3 more than SMW, sorry if it seems like I'm putting the game down. I don't intend to, just that I used to feel the same. And then I didn't. :-(

I didn't find the suits at all useless. There were water stages interspersed in most worlds, and the frog suit was pretty much mandatory for a couple of stages that appeared long after world 3.

The hammer suit is pretty useful in the 7th world due to allowing you to maintain proximity from all the fireball-spewing piranha plants. Remember that there are numerous pipes between you and them, so the fire flower is pretty useless. You have too many pipes obstructing your fireballs. The hammer suit also allows you to absorb enemy fireballs if you're ducking, so that was handy as well.

The tanooki suit's statue ability was useful for dealing with enemies in fortresses because they couldn't otherwise be knocked out by any other attacks, except maybe hammers. Plus you had all the standard benefits of the tail.

Why not? When the entire concept of the game is centered around that character? If Yoshi met up with Mario in the middle and ferried him to save Luigi, sure. But that's not the case. It's a story about Mario was separated from his brother, and with the help of Yoshi, was able to find him, save him, and get home. That's how the game is framed. It starts off with Mario and Luigi being carried by the stork.

I knew you would bring that up.
So I prepared an argument. And it's simple.
The gameplay has absolutely nothing to do with Peach. Barring certain titles, nothing can happen to her that with determine whether or not the game is lost. It's not a story about Peach sitting in a cage while Mario is out there somewhere trying to save her. It's a story about Mario going through trials with the ultimate goal of rescuing Peach.

In Yoshi's Island, the intro tells you that Mario knows where to go to find Luigi. So we can assume: Without Mario, Yoshi would not know what to do (he can't even figure out how to read the map that the stork dropped). Mario is trying to reach his brother, and the Yoshi's decide to help. They can only do so because baby Mario's connection to his twin brother is able to guide the Yoshi where to go.

That's true, but Super Mario World is a different style of game than Super Mario Bros 3. The power-ups in SMB3 do not fit the style of SMW at all. The cape and Yoshi, however, match the colorful land of SMW perfectly.

It's also true that SMB3 had more themes. In fact, each of its 8 worlds had their own themes. But again, SMW only having one world and theme is all part of its style.

In the end, preference determines which Mario game the player likes best, but if you ask me, both games are perfect tens.
