cockpits, motorcycles, that one game with the chair that moves around,
>*cough* *cough* outrun *cough*
and other gimmicky pieces of shit are all welcome.

If I want to, say, build an mame cabinet like the OP, how fucked would I be trying to play fighting games (obviously no two-player). Also how well do different racing/flight games play with each others wheels. Cause if I can use the same wheel for pole position as I can for Outrun, afterburner, and starwars, then I'm about to have one bitchin' ass cabinet in my house.
I'm also thinking that one of these would be perfect for racing/flight sims.
There's gonna be more buttons than a PVM in there.

I've always liked cockpit machines, they're just so comfy to sit in. It's like you're encased in your own little world.

well sheeeiit, thats a good idea.
you could do a vs racing game that way, or a vs dogfight, either would work.
I've been giving it some more thought, and a completely enclosed cabinet sounds like it would be best, I'll probably go with the design of the original pole position or a similar kind of sloped shape, and have doors on either side.
That way you can set up a full sound system inside.

I've looked into building a mame cabinet in the past, and I have some diagrams for interchangeable control... decks? I'm drawing a blank for the correct term. Basically you can swap between a stick, or a wheel, or trackball, etc... and its all just plug and play.
I'll sit down with photoshop and some CAD programs tomorrow to pump out a design. Then its off to the plywood and paint store, maybe the CRT thread to be spoon fed on what computer monitor I should buy. If its not too much of a pain in the ass then I'll set up another cabinet and daisy chain them or something. I'm guessing LAN is how you'd do it.

Yes, but they've been stolen by the mice people. The only way to enter is by offering a sacrificial child, usually a first born son.

Update on the Mame,
There aren't really any existing patterns out there for diy cockpit machines. Lots of info on building your own starwars set though. Looks like I'll be trailblazing through most of this process.
Funny enough, every forum thread I've seen on the topic has said to pick up a gutted Pole Position cabinet and use that. I dont like fucking up existing machines (gutted or not), so I'll be making one from scratch. Everything I come up with will be tossed into a rar file and posted here in case you guy's are interested in doing this yourself.
Some idea's I'm tossing around
>actual used car seat, or just a standard (cushioned) bench
>older MAME only computer, more up to date computer (for sims/consoles + MAME), and/or console support (GT, forza, ace combat, etc...)
>2-seater or 1-seater (can add removable arm-rests for when its just one person)
>size of the screen, and type of display to use.
It's been years since I've been to an arcade, so I'm relying on subjective input from the rest of you on what frills should be included.
Also, to get the most of the cab, I'll be relying on pics like the ones ITT to figure out how many buttons and of what kind I'll need.
And dont worry, tron's covered.

True enough...I dunno, I guess as a kid, I thought we'd be so much further...or something like that. Something like, "If we can do that NOW, what will the future be like?!? We'll be living in Tron!"

...fuck, being a kid was great in a lot of respects.

Personally:
>actual used car seat, or just a standard (cushioned) bench
bench
>old computer, modern computer, or consoles
Whichever you have on hand and will use the most. You can always just add support for them at a later date.
>2-seater or 1-seater
2 player. extra space on either side of you isn't that big of a deal, and if it really bothers you that much, you can build fold-down armrests, or perhaps some kind of snap-on, or slide-on armrest with extra controls on it for throttle, gear shifter, cup holders, etc. Plus you can still get in some final fight (and have room for the controls as well)
>display
That depends upon a few things. A good PC monitor (one that can go down to 15khz) is the easiest to set up since you'll be using a PC. Other than that you can get adapters to plug a computer into a TV, as well as consoles into a monitor. Just pick up the same screen you'd use for anything, a pixel is a pixel. You really cant go wrong with a PVM
As for the size, I think most arcades used 20" screens. So I wouldn't go any smaller than that. Unlike with /vr/, widescreens are not necessarily bad, they can be turned over for top-down shooters, and other mame games can be set up to just ignore (black bar) the extra space on the top and bottom. On the other hand, you can do the same for top-down shooters, and tell mame to ignore the sides. So basically, whatever is on hand is best.
If you make it two player, then you'll have plenty of room to swap out for a bigger (or smaller) screen if you wish.

Once I tried one of those bicycle games and the bike had these sharp as fuck metal pedals.

Lost my footing on the pedal and it swung around and carved up a good chunk of skin on my leg (I was wearing shorts)
