So I am very interested in all the older multiplayer, specifically FPS games. Like all the Unreals, Quakes, Tribes, Dooms, etc. I am also a huge-ass poorfag.

So I am curious how I would go about playing these older games without having a legit copy. I know there is also open source stuff for these games. But I am just dreadfully unaware how to get through this stuff.

I have Halo CE installed on my computer, which I simply got by downloading all the files off of some mediafire link in the Halo CE threads on /v/, and I can play with everyone and all with no problems. Is it something like that?

I've never played Unreal or Tribes online so I can't say about those, but with the Quake series you can easily play them online with out any CD-Key easily and with Doom, just grab a Doom 2 IWAD and one of the various Multiplayer sourceports like Zandronum and you're good to go pretty much.

You'll likely get better and possibly more detailed in the Doom/Retro FPS general on this board

Ah okay, I'll check out the Doom general thread.

Alright, but where to download Quake games? Just a general piratebay search will suffice?

>> No.1547059

>>1547039
Yeah piratebay or bitsnoop search should suffice, look for "Quake Collection" as it's got all three plus expansions in a single ISO and then look into the various sourceports (like Dark Places for Quake 1).

Just in case anyone (like maybe OP) was curious, but Unreal 1+2 and UT99 are all on sale for cheeaaap on gog

>> No.1547136

Actually that's why I started the thread. Seeing the GOG sale made me remember how badly I want to play multiplayer again.

>> No.1547143

It's been a while, but I believe with Quake 1 & 2 you just need the right sourceport while with 3 you need the right soruceport and be sure any servers you connect to aren't running punkbuster as that checks your CD-Key I believe and I don't think any sourceport supports punkbuster too.

Also, like running the Doom games with sourceports, you don't need to install the Quake games you just need the required files for the sourceport like the PAK files from the ID1 directory for Quake 1. Oh also, if you want music with Quake 1 there's a separate file you can load up that contains the soundtrack, I don't have a link on hand at the moment though.

>>1547136
I do recommend buying Unreal from GOG as well if you haven't yet, as it's ready to play online the moment you install it if I remember correctly.

>> No.1547153

>>1547143
I would buy them if I could. Poorfag shit, otherwise I wouldn't be looking into pirating it and going through all this headache.

Do many of the Quake servers use punkbuster?

>> No.1547164

>>1547153
Nowadays I don't think there are any servers that still use punkbuster for Quake 3 so you should be good, well aside from maybe some inactive ones it's been a while since I've played.

>> No.1547193

Tribes should still be free.

Unreal and UT both don't require any sort of key, so it's just install and play online. I highly recommend UT the most. So many unique modes, mods, total conversions, weapons, etc.

I'd love to get some of /vr/ together for an Assault day.

Really? They don't require a key at all?

Which Tribes are you talking about?

>> No.1547291

>>1547271
Nope, no key for Unreal/UT. I remember all you had to have was the CD in the drive and you could even circumvent that by editing the INI file to point the CD path to its install path.

Sometimes I wish we had a wiki or something to give complete guides for those who have the retail versions, gog versions, pirated versions, etc.

So, I can download the GOG versions of Unreal and UT, and I'll be good?

Do you know anything about Unreal Tournment? Do I actually need a key for that?

You can join anyone with the original UT and have no problems. Not that I condone piracy or anything, I firmly believe in purchasing a legitimate copy of this fine game!

*ahem* butit'llworkseriously *ahem*

Later UT games are another matter (and outside of /vr/'s scope), you need a legit key to use those.

>> No.1547360

Also do not buy any id games. All of the money goes to Bethesda, and fuck them. None of the original Doom or Quake team is there anymore, apart from Willits, and he's no Romero or Carmack.

Personally I prefer owning games, more so physical than digital.

Sadly, I don't have the ability to get games even when they are cheap as shit.

I would much rather prefer owning them on steam or gog, but hey it's out of my reach, so I'll just pirate for now and enjoy.

Surprisingly there's not much gog unreal torrents on piratebay.

>> No.1547369

>without having a legit copy
Unreal works like a charm, in fact GOG even has it.
Quake is pretty much required to not use a CD nowadays, thanks to sourceports.
Same with Doom. Check out Doom General for that specific one.

>> No.1547372

>>1547360
Even if it did go to id, don't buy them. The Steam releases are absolutely awful. They just took the executable and run them through steam. No music if it was on CD. Its just the exact game you would download off the internets, running through a pre-configured dosbox.

I'm not even biased and don't really care who got the money. I downloaded Quake 1 and Hexen last time they were on sale for next to nothing. I got ripped off. Quake has no music, Hexen has the soundblaster FM (worse than the CD version I actually have lying around somewhere and the N64 version I also have) and runs through a pre-configured DOSBOX that suffers from slowdown at points.

Punkbuster is dogshit anyway. It did it's share of fucking up the multiplayer with it's constant breaking and requiring manual updates all the time as well as shitting on peoples performance.

What does that have to do with anything? What you're paying for is the IWADs, they and everyone else knows that source ports exist.

If they grabbed someone's source port and sold it bundled with the IWADs there would be a huge outcry, are you serious?

1000 times this

I had nothing but problems with punkbuster, it was ridiculous.
I would constantly get booted because it thought I was cheating after like 5-7 minutes on the server, it wasn't even immediate so it was almost worse in a way.
At one point, I could only do duels because I didn't want to risk fucking up a 4v4 TDM game and have 7 people be mad at me, rather than just 1. And even then I was really only comfortable with playing with clanmates who knew I might get kicked randomly.
It was one of the major reasons I ended up having to quit the game originally.

It totally ruined Q3 for me, fuck pb.
