Can we have a Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts thread?
first two games welcome as well.
I made it past the spinning dragon bitch at the end of the level 3 and now I'm stuck in the weird esophagus looking thing.

how far have you made it?

Oh man, trying to get though that last lvl the second time around with the Goddess bracelet was a nightmare. I think I logged more time suck there then I did on my first play through of Megaman 2. Eventually I beat the game. Just make sure you know where all the treasure chest are located, collect as much money as possible (you might have already realized by now that it's pretty important) and learn the Red Arremer's attack pattern, and with patience and practice you to can make it to the end.

I did not know that. I set for 9 lives and just kinda kept going until they run out, which they did like 3 times on the run that I finished on. Other times I've always turned the game off before running out of continues because I tunnelvisioning out of gameplay and in to reflex-playing.

You quit before you run out of continues, because a continue for you is 3 times as many lives as it is for normal players.

But I would recommend against doing that. Running out of continues in a game like Makaimura gives a very nice sense of closure. In good games, running out of continues is a part of the game's pacing and difficulty curve.

The bow is a miserable weapon, I mean unupgraded it's okay enough but once you hit jade armor that third homing shot will deliberately miss everything, gimping your ability to shoot.

I personally like the lance, I just wish you could throw more than one once you upgrade it to the rocket lance.

Yeah the unupgraded bow is great, especially against Red Arremers and taking out enemies in the ice level. When I use it I avoid upgrading my armor for as long as possible.

Of course you still have to deal with only rattling off two shots at a time, and the angle of those shots are slightly wonky.

But at least it isn't as awkward to use as the fucking tri blade.

Is there some specific instance that the tri-blade is good for? Does its attack pattern work well against the flight path of gargoyles or something? To me it just seemed like an "aw fuck, looks like my weapon was downgraded" powerup, like the torch.

Any stage that slopes upwards or features red aremers say otherwise.

Granted the magic is absolute shit, but every arrow from the jade deals 2 points of damage, so it can easily deal at least 4 points per shot which is enough for most enemies. And the "last" (second-to-last) stage is pretty much built around having an iron armor and bow.

Then you must have good luck with the homing shots because the homing effect never works properly for me. Man Super GnG frustrates me because so many of the weapon upgrades make the weapons either worse or so awkward to use it's not worth it.

When you're used to the homing crossbow it's all about choosing whether to duck or not before shooting to get the shots to hit before they start circling around like they are Wonder Boy IV Fire Storm shots. And you never try to shoot double-jump shots with it unless you're fighting a single red devil with no other hazards.

In short, you want 2 shots to hit and the 3rd to go off-screen without homing on anything. Hard to explain, but it's a bit more of a planning weapon than, say, the knife which is more about quick reactions and mobility.

But then again, I'm the kind of person who'd recommend the torch in the very first chest just for the safe angle on the first burning skull pillar on higher diffs, so I might not be the best authority on the subject.
