Does /vr/ like oldschool first person RPGs? If yes, what are the really good titles?

Fate: Gates of Dawn. Probably the best RPG I've ever layed hands on.

>> No.1528305

Might & Magic IV and V are probably the chillest first-person CRPGs ever made

What game is this? I've tried to describe it in one of those "games you can't remember" threads, and I think that may be it

Aside of the controls, it did. It has that smooth buttery, no-bullshit feel that every good retro RPG is capable of giving, and it's very easy to get into. And the runemagic system is still one of my favorite spell systems ever.

Pool of Radiance
The Elder Scrolls - Daggerfall
Wizardry VI - Bane of the Cosmic Forge
Wizardry VII - Crusaders of the Dark Savant
Wizardry VIII
Betrayal at Krondor
Ravenloft - Strahds Possession
Dungeon Hack
Eye of the Beholder II - The Legend of Darkmoon
Might and Magic IV and V - World Of Xeen

Do not limit yourself only to first person RPGs.There are plenty a good ones that are isometric and in top down view.

>> No.1528404

>>1528387
How do I get into Pool of Radiance? The controls feel clunky and are putting me off greatly, having to look up every third line in the manual is tedious and the game economy and loot system feels incredibly botched.

Add the first three Realms of Arkania and you've got a pretty legit list right here.

>How do I get into Pool of Radiance?
It is simple:
>look up the date the game came out
>take everything the way it is
The game is very old.
Just try and play it as if it is the first game you ever played and your taste in gamaes is yet to take form.

I am no stranger to games of that era. I've finished Might & Magic 2, Dungeon Master etc. and loved them. It's this particular one that puzzles me. It's my first SSI RPG however.

>> No.1529392

I tried playing Champions of Krynn (always like Dragonlance...) but couldn't deal with the battle screen. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but it's hard to tell where the enemy is, until you're almost right next to them. At the beginning of a fight, have to keep scrolling the view around until you see them. Maybe there's a zoom function or something I missed?

Otherwise, I really liked Dungeon Master, and Might & Magic III (never tried the others in that series). Oh and Bard's Tale is fun also.

How hardcore are these games? I heard they're pretty brutal.
Do I have a chance of making a blind playthrough? I finished Drakensang so I have a vague understanding of the underlying mechanics.

>> No.1529736

>>1529728
It's not as difficult as it is convoluted. The manual has 60 pages. Drakensang is like Skyrim in comparison tbh.

The town music is burned into my brain for all eternity and I hardly played it. My brother was obsessed. He still remembers the way through the first dungeon almost 25 years later lol.

I just started it and I'm kind of struggling as well. Just hauling my 5 unconscious friends around the town looking for a place to rest. Fuck you, city guard.

I'm playing a cracked Amiga version, so I think I'll be spared the manual checks.

If you really feel like dropping it, consider playing the FRUA port by Ray Dyer instead. FRUA is the final evolution of the gold box game engine and a lot more polished than this. I've played dozens of Ray's other modules on that platform and trust him to make it fun.

I've also enjoyed playing Black Crypt and Ishtar series.

Hired Guns. One of the top-10 games on Amiga, as far as I'm concerned. It's basically a futuristic version of Dungeon Master, and each character can be controlled by a separate player.

The same company that later brought you GTA

I forgot the name of that one game that was like "Dungeon Master...except in space". I have it on my hard drive somewhere. Anyway, if anyone thinks of it, post it, because that's my contribution to the thread.

Captive? Dunno if it was taglined like that but that's basically what it is.

Tip if you're starting out, running only 1 character can work out easier in the long run.

You and an alien Sean Connery go on an adventure to save Patrick Stewart from a Scrotum witch pretty much.
