The controls and camera were so fucking bad. Got to play a demo unit at a toy store pre-launch and I absolutely believed that Nintendo had completely fucking lost it over the desperation around getting the fucking N64 out the door finally (remember, this was a system that saw tons of delays in the face of both the Saturn and PS1 enjoying success). To this day I cannot understand the reviews and the popularity of that goddamn game. I've tried to play it so many times since, even sitting down and forcing myself to play through the game to the end, and that was one of the most fucking frustrating, terrible gaming experiences I've ever had. And I just got bare minimum # of stars necessary to win. I think it's "popularity" was a bunch of kids that actually had nothing better to do than figure out its poor controls and camera and memorize its peculiarities, much as I did with E.T. back in the 2600 days. Difference is: I did, and still do, think ET sucks.

Gameplay isn't like how a particular food tastes, or whether or not someone likes a particular painting. It's a mechanical way of guiding a character in a videogame and is the exact fucking same for everyone. And I could load up the game and point out dozens of serious, game-breaking flaws in the design of the controls and gameplay of Mario 64, and people like you will still tell me I'm wrong because... why? I've been playing games all my life, since gaming itself was in its infancy. I like to think that I know something about how gaming works, how game controls work, and what makes a game's control and gameplay good and bad. And yet everyone seems to pour out and dismiss all these things and just say "BUT IT'S GOOD REALLY", without really dismissing any of the major control and camera issues (e.g. -- there are so many places where the camera cannot be set to any sane, straight angle to help you make a certain jump or navigate a tricky ledge, and it all comes down to trial and error which is just insanity for a platformer like Mario, whose gaming history was straightforward 2d platformers where something like that was NEVER an issue).

This is why I think there was a bit of brainwashing going on. Nintendo couldn't stand that they had lost out and spent so much time on a subpar platformer as their launch title with their major franchise, so they paid off reviewers and hyped up the game so much that you felt like you were not worth anything as a gamer to dare question its quality.

The hit detection was so weird, it was impossible to tell the actual orientation of things, capships were the stupidest thing ever, and the engine itself couldn't even control its own speed. You could either have a smooth framerate in normal flight and a slideshow in a dogfight, or a cracked-out spazfest in normal flight and dogfights rapidly varying between impossibly fast and just right.

Sure, it was groundbreaking when it released but once the polygons started flying those flying messes of pixels sliding around on their weird vectors and prerendered limitations made it lose its appeal REAL quicklike.

So lately my latest obsession has been the DS port of SM64. I didn't have the game as a kid and I was only ever able to play it at friend's houses, so most of the game is fairly new to me.

The DS port has some issues. The N64 control was cromulent enough in my book, although the camera was pretty annoying at times. The DS version controls like dogshit because it was a launch game, they tried to force touchscreen control, and somebody somewhere along the line was a fucking idiot about it. The camera control is even more insufferable. Yet I STILL can't put it down. Yeah, it's flawed. But for me it's fun! It's not that I'm bored and don't have a LITERAL GORILLION other games to play.

And the only places where the accent would make it sound like that (ie brooklyn, etc) are places where mario is a more common name, making it even more unlikely that you'd say his name like that on purpose.

and I dont see a difference in the pronunciation of "say-gah" or "seh-gah", or even "say-guh" and "seh-guh". its putting emphasis on different letters, but not changing the sound itself.
