From where I'm standing you're the one who seems to have his panties in a knot. If you disagree with me that's fine, but don't make claims that you can't back up such as those regarding the general opinion of the graphics then.

Furthermore I'm not part of any "defense force", I'm not even a huge fan of KF. You might want to remove your tinfoil while posting here, there are no organized groups of people blindly countering every criticism against a game here, I only did so because I had facts to back me up.

With all of that said there's no point in going on with this little feud, it will lead nowhere other than derailing an otherwise fine thread. So I'm sorry for even fueling it in the first place, have a nice day.

Never played Mario Party, I take it?

MP1 had some tortuous minigames that required you to rotate the stick really fast. The most efficient way to do this was to use the palm of your hands to rotate the stick. This, unfortunately, was also detrimental to the skin on your palms. It actually got so bad that Nintendo Power was giving out free Mario party gloves to players who provided proof of purchase to prevent players from drilling holes into their hands.

The joke from the comic is that the man is pretending to be Jesus because Jesus was nailed onto the cross (by his hands) and he shows his wounds as proof. The priest sees through his ruse and produces the Mario Part cart from his pocket.

Not him, but don't get me fucking started on 3d Mario games. Holy fuck.

The controls and camera were so fucking bad. Got to play a demo unit at a toy store pre-launch and I absolutely believed that Nintendo had completely fucking lost it over the desperation around getting the fucking N64 out the door finally (remember, this was a system that saw tons of delays in the face of both the Saturn and PS1 enjoying success). To this day I cannot understand the reviews and the popularity of that goddamn game. I've tried to play it so many times since, even sitting down and forcing myself to play through the game to the end, and that was one of the most fucking frustrating, terrible gaming experiences I've ever had. And I just got bare minimum # of stars necessary to win. I think it's "popularity" was a bunch of kids that actually had nothing better to do than figure out its poor controls and camera and memorize its peculiarities, much as I did with E.T. back in the 2600 days. Difference is: I did, and still do, think ET sucks.

I honestly believe Nintendo brainwashed an entire generation of gamers into actually believing that Mario 64 was good.

Or... Or, and hear me out, you're the one who is wrong. Just an idea.

>> No.1516459

>>1516449
You know, it's really strange to me to hear people that honestly believe that Mario 64 is good. Gameplay isn't like how a particular food tastes, or whether or not someone likes a particular painting. It's a mechanical way of guiding a character in a videogame and is the exact fucking same for everyone. And I could load up the game and point out dozens of serious, game-breaking flaws in the design of the controls and gameplay of Mario 64, and people like you will still tell me I'm wrong because... why? I can't understand. This isn't a difference of opinion; this is a difference of gameplay quality.

I've been playing games all my life, since gaming itself was in its infancy. I like to think that I know something about how gaming works, how game controls work, and what makes a game's control and gameplay good and bad. And yet everyone seems to pour out and dismiss all these things and just say "BUT IT'S GOOD REALLY", without really dismissing any of the major control and camera issues (e.g. -- there are so many places where the camera cannot be set to any sane, straight angle to help you make a certain jump or navigate a tricky ledge, and it all comes down to trial and error which is just insanity for a platformer like Mario, whose gaming history was straightforward 2d platformers where something like that was NEVER an issue).

This is why I think there was a bit of brainwashing going on. Nintendo couldn't stand that they had lost out and spent so much time on a subpar platformer as their launch title with their major franchise, so they paid off reviewers and hyped up the game so much that you felt like you were not worth anything as a gamer to dare question its quality.

>> No.1516464

See, it's the simple, one-off dismissals like this while I try to actually describe the issue that makes me believe that you're just mentally fighting the programming done to you by Nintendo about Mario 64.

It's really sad, and that release actually marked a point in gaming history where gaming actually started declining. Yesterday's N64 owners with its poor games such as Mario 64 and GoldenEye became the XBox and modern Playstation (2+) gamers with their subpar console games, and began this terrible downward spiral into what modern gaming is today -- a clusterfuck of subpar games with terrible controls and laughable gameplay.

There's definitely some camera issues, but not nearly as many as you make it sound, and I felt that the controls themselves were actually pretty damn good, especially compared to a lot of other 3d platformers.

Beyond all its issues, it was also a very early 3d platformer, and it also was one of the first 3d platformers to have a sort of free roaming hub level, with multiple challenges for each stage. Some of the tricks it did, like a level changing depending on where you entered the painting, were absolutely brilliant for the time, and if you have examples of 3d platforming games from the same time that handled the two issues you've mentioned better, I would love to hear about them because they're probably fun games.

>>1516470
You write off that post for being a "simple, one off dismissal", but the only actual points you've brought up in so many words for disliking the game is that "The controls and camera were so fucking bad". Beyond that you just call it frustrating and make odd accusations about Nintendo rushing the game out the door and brainwashing.

You say shit about how gameplay is a mechanical way of guiding a character and it's the exact fucking same and I'd have to strongly disagree. Even in the realm of 2d platformers only, there are wild difference in how characters control and interact with the game environment.

Give some specific examples of how it doesn't work, and stop pretending that walls of text mean you're view is better argued. Fag.

You simply listed the most commonly overcriticized aspects of early 3D games then launched into a rant about how Nintendo spontaneously decided their new game was terrible and how modern gaming is terrible. Don't expect people to give detailed responses to pure bullshit.

Nigga what? 2D Wing Commander was FUCKED. The hit detection was so weird, it was impossible to tell the actual orientation of things, capships were the stupidest thing ever, and the engine itself couldn't even control its own speed. You could either have a smooth framerate in normal flight and a slideshow in a dogfight, or a cracked-out spazfest in normal flight and dogfights rapidly varying between impossibly fast and just right.

Sure, it was groundbreaking when it released but once the polygons started flying those flying messes of pixels sliding around on their weird vectors and prerendered limitations made it lose its appeal REAL quicklike.

And I'm saying that as a big fan of the games, even though your post reeks of bait.

So lately my latest obsession has been the DS port of SM64. I didn't have the game as a kid and I was only ever able to play it at friend's houses, so most of the game is fairly new to me.

The DS port has some issues. The N64 control was cromulent enough in my book, although the camera was pretty annoying at times. The DS version controls like dogshit because it was a launch game, they tried to force touchscreen control, and somebody somewhere along the line was a fucking idiot about it. The camera control is even more insufferable. Yet I STILL can't put it down. Yeah, it's flawed. But for me it's fun! It's not that I'm bored and don't have a LITERAL GORILLION other games to play.

And now you're trying to tell us that your SUBJECTIVE taste in gameplay is an objective construct. You think it's bad, so it's a terrible game. Open your mind, man.

The N64 had no games, and what few games were released are praised to hell and bacl as masterpieces. Rare's collectathons are examples of shoddy game design, with DK64 being the "this is what you shouldn't do" example. Even Banjo was guilty of this, the notes were laid out in a way that they serve no other purpose other than to guide the player. The fact so many N64 games forced the player to revisit areas to collect everything they can so that they can progress shows off the N64's glaring weakness; carts were small, so the games had to be small.

This is incredibly stupid. The whole joke is 'This guy pronounces things differently, therefore he's stupid. Also, anti-Americanism is hilarious'.

Once you realize how diverse the world's languages and dialects are, you realize how petty and dumb something like this is.

That whole big display of people from different countries pronouncing it the exact same way? That doesn't exist. Every single one of those people would pronounce the word differently depending on their native language and dialect.

Honestly, I've seen similar advice in other modern games ("hit it till it dies" "don't get hit"), and I genuinely believe it's good advice. It's in essence what you should do, the rest (learning attack patterns, timing your openings, minding your surroundings) comes as a result.

American here, I'd never heard someone say "meh-ree-o" until /vr/ was created. seriously, where would you even get the idea that you pronounce it that way? Mario is an actual name. And the only places where the accent would make it sound like that (ie brooklyn, etc) are places where mario is a more common name, making it even more unlikely that you'd say his name like that on purpose.

and I dont see a difference in the pronunciation of "say-gah" or "seh-gah", or even "say-guh" and "seh-guh". its putting emphasis on different letters, but not changing the sound itself.

For my 3rd year medial (analogous to US 8th grade) final project, each student pulled random coordinates from a hat and had to create a fictional nation around those coordinates. The project had to create an encyclopaedia-like paper about this fictional country based on the coordinates you were given and using the cultures/languages/history of surrounding regions as inspiration. I got a patch of landless ocean just southeast of Japan, so I made Neo Kobe and used much of the same setting points as Snatcher omitting bioroids and all that crap.
My "article" discussed manned taxis, credit cards not being "accepted in some parts of the city," the nation's space programme recently launching its first exploratory shuttle (the Beagle Jerusalem) and more allusions to the Snatcherverse.
