I second that notion, TokiMemo is a good start. Most of the show's appeal (at least for me) is how funny Arino is (the rest is on how clumsy he is and the AD antics.)

Him playing TokiMemo means he won't be stuck on a platforming bit for half an hour or anything, so there are no parts to lose interest, really.

And to this day, I still love the answer he gave when asked who his favorite gal is.

Because that would take much longer and cost more, for something 99% of the target demo isn't going to notice or care about. You are downplaying the huge difference between coding for the NES and coding nowadays with modern high level languages.

I don't know man... Back then, where you could only play games in arcades or at home, having one to carry around with you was pretty great. It didn't matter how short the game was back then. You had a couple of minutes to kill, so why not jump over some barrels while you're at it.
Having a full length, at-home game experience just wasn't a thing back then... So of course it's going to be bad.
Nintendo has a ton of really shitty games that do not hold up today, most of those being the earlier games. Even you yourself said "unlike good NES games."

The games were fine. The gameplay was alright for what you got, and people still enjoy them for nostalgic reasons. You don't like them, and that's fine. You've done a good job expressing your opinion on the matter. Other people still enjoy them. That's all there is to it.

I unlocked the ARPG you were asking about, it's a pretty good Zelda clone. Some unique features are the 'rupies' in the game are expended when you use disposable items like bombs, arrows and the rifle, and you have multiple lives. When you die, the broken toy soldier stays there and can be used to block enemies and protect yourself.

It's pretty good, but the last dungeon is really hard, if I can't clear it soon, I'll likely either give up at the shrine (this is the only game that allows it) or have the ADs help me.

How about some retro zombie games? Now I know that nowadays every single modern game has a some sort of pointless zombie DLC and people are getting kinda of sick of them, but these old school zombies are a different deal.
By "old school zombies" I mean the Romero zombies and other similar zombies from the same era.
I like Corpse Killer. It's good pointless violent fun with extra cheesy full motion videos. I like the zombies in this game because they remind me of 70s/80s italian horror movies.

I finished the game today (aside from a few coin games not yet unlocked), but I think what's really noteworthy about this game is how much it was aimed at big fans of the show.

That's why I think if you don't pick up some references it might not be as fun. For example, Wing Hero is an almost straight clone of Sky Kid (down to what Arino shouts out when you play), and the adventure/town segments are full of references to the show (favorite one: a game stops working, so you look for someone to fix it. You find Suda, who scrapes a screw driver across the game till it works). I think these small, aimed-at-fans touches make the annoyances in the game not just bearable, but part of it.

tl;dr, The game might not be totally fun if you're not a Japanese fluent GCCX fan.

"What are you doing to my pure and innocent game-related show, writing a skit like that?!"

>> No.1525630

I don't know Japanese so perhaps someone who both speaks Japanese and saw the translations can answer this.

I don't doubt the accuracy of the translations, but whenever I watch GCCX, it seems like they just find the perfect words for everything. May it be game related or pointing something out. Maybe some of you also had this kind of phenomena.

And this isn't only in GCCX, but also in Gaki no Tsukai. I know Japanese comedy is much about pointing things out and maybe I'm projecting because I myself can't manage to find the right words in many situations throughout my life, especially not the words that seem to be spot-on.

>> No.1525641

>>1525630
The hardest part about translation isn't understanding Japanese - it's understanding both Japanese and English intimately enough that you can create the "perfect" rewording from one language to the other. Which is especially hard here when you consider that Japanese and English have completely different grammar.

The mark of an expert translator is that "they just find the perfect words for everything".

>> No.1525645

I guess that depends on your translations skills.

>> No.1525746

Pretty much this.

If you translate it word for word, it wont come out sounding so great in English. You have to take what they are saying it, and change words around a bit so that it makes sense (and has a good flow) in English, while still keeping true to what they said in their own language.

"Catch Copy Special" came about when the SA thread wondered what iconic English-laguage flyers and magazine ads would suit the format. The translation team took these suggestions, had ZG overdub the taglines into Japanese, and then took a Samurai Pizza Cats approach to the available footage (throwing out the real script and just writing something funny, but matching the original's timing).

"Quest of Ki First Hour" was a response to people jokingly asking for the full 8 hours of the challenge to be subbed, right after the SA thread had kicked up a storm about TV-N's nonsense. Everything about the release was a checklist for the 'bad practices' fansub groups have been known for (hosted on a crap filesharing site, obscure file format, watermarking, honorifics, not translating certain words, bad spelling/grammar), but the translation buried under all that is actually serviceable.

Just kidding, the more people hear the Kacho gospel the better.

I remember back when I started watching, absolute squat had been translated. SA had only started semi-recently and zari-gani wasn't even in the team yet. Most we had were those fuckawful TV-Nihon subs of Season 1 + a few others, but since they were almost all we had it's not like there was much room to complain.

Man, the amount of episodes we have now was pretty much only a distant dream back then and didn't seem remotely realistic.

I watched a few episodes of games I know (Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island etc), and being a bit of a fan of both trains and Japanese games I checked out Densha de GO! and loved it so much I downloaded all the episodes and started from episode one. Season 18 information!

General stuff

Episode wise, season 18 will apparently have 20 episodes

The opening - new music remix, but old classic games scroll. Feels kind of lonely.

AD? Matsui's still on duty

Snacks? Apparently Arino is well and his eyes are okay, but his doctor has recommended he quit salty/sour snacks (bad reception, not sure which), so his squid snacks were confiscated (and later returned).

The King? The 'six seasons curse' is alive and well. He got transformed into an elephant and is being quizzed on the 10th anniversary celebrations by some circus clowns

Age wise - apparently him playing with his glasses on, shoulders hunched with a cooling pad on is okay. Makes him look way older in my opinion

New corner? Arino's at a hot spring resort playing with the Famicom Box, which has 30+ games to challenge. He played Super Mario Bros.(not understanding that he was playing with a time limit per 100 yen coin), claiming it'd be easy for someone who beat the game at the Budokan.

...

Still, Arino playing Famicom/NES games with an NES controller, kind of sweet...
More Info - http://famicomworld.com/system/other/famicombox/.

The game:

Opinion? One of the cheapest looking games I've ever seen. I almost want to track it down just to confirm how bad it is. Every level ends with a "choose-one-of-four-doors lottery" and if you get it wrong, back to the start of the level! So cheap.

Last boss? Recycled from a previous boss. Hooray Tonkin House!

Result? Beat with little AD help, might be another great season

Next game? "That game requested by so many people!" No clues at all really.

Yeah, no. The Tonkin House games they've played ARE shit though. Everything Hudson made for the system is pretty much gold, but I'm guessing the recent demise of both them and Irem have made it next to impossible to play anymore games by either publisher because Konami keeps being a cunt with the rights.

Don't make a thread after this one dies. The GCCX threads on /vr/ are completely stagnant and dead nowadays. There is no discussion at all and the few hardcore fans are rather obnoxious fanboys.

This thread is merely a rss feed for new episodes and I don't think that /vr/ was made for that reason. If you want actual GCCX threads full of live and discussion there is sometimes one on /v/ (hard to believe but it's true).

This general was completely killed trough the lack of new fans and the obnoxiousness of the hardcore fans. Also because it's no general material in the first place. Threads about stagnant subjects tend to be shitty.

This is not to imply that threads that live long and are constant are shitty--if they have things to discuss, they aren't. But when people have run out of things to talk about, it's best to let it rest until next time.

For example, there are certain threads on /vg/ which could use a break because for whatever reason, people feel compelled to sit around and talk even though they have nothing to talk about. Shitposting and whatnot skyrockets during these periods.

ANYWAY, none of this matters because I'm about to go watch the Street Fighter episode for giggles. Peace.

Pretty much this. A janitor/moderator should be objective at all times. Also it's uncomfortable as fuck fearing that your posts will disappear just because a janitor dislikes them.

Seriously, heavy moderation is never a good idea. Don't remove the spice the thread needs. Maybe the little bit off-topic and the actual talk about the problems is the spark that we need to improve the thread.

It's one thing to be subtle about it or to filter a thread of all things you dislike. Seriously, you could argue that all the problems are because of the janitor. Every thread has some form of shitposting. It's is the price for the freedom we receive. The janitor not only deletes blatant shitposting but also controversies and basically all the fun.

Who the fuck wants to discuss anything if a janitor babysits you? All the spice gets removed from this thread. We either strictly speak about GCCX or we don't speak at all. Do you know why other generals work out and this one doesn't? In the other generals they form a little community of people that like the same thing. They discuss about the fun and the fundamentals of the show. Sure they get a little bit off-topic and people are argueing all the time. but that's is exactly what makes a thread lively.

What we have is the opposite of 4chan. We are in a fucking prison here. There is tension everybody especially the veteran fans feel. No one new wants to participate because our thread looks lifeless from the outside, and it fucking is. It is absolutely no fun.

We are essentially just forced to circlejerk till the end of the days. We're in a typical forum scheme where the big daddy clearly shows his balls and stumps everyone who doesn't get in line.

Please janitor. I think I speak for everyone in this thread if I say that you should fuck off and get the hell out.

Only delete something if it gets reported. Let the JD guy alone, everyone ignores him anyway. That one post doesn't hurt anyone.

I had a recurring problem where I would say that I disliked Donkey Kong country because I thought the controls weren't responsive and the platforming somewhat floaty. My posts would be deleted minutes later, where I would repost them and was suddenly banned for "excessive shitposting."

After the second such occurrence, I made screen caps and emailed them to moot. It stopped being a problem shortly thereafter.

The obvious conclusion is that while this board was new, the vetting process for mods and janitors was somewhat hasty.

You're free to think this. That's about it. You can think and say all you want. You should be allowed to, you should be able to be free.

I'm just fucking fed up with the janitor.

ha, I had that exact thing happen to me in this very thread. I said something about how I wasnt a fan of some game(i cant remember which now, it was a while back) and I had my post removed. For simply stating that I disliked whatever game for whatever reason. Then when I posted something to the extent of "hey, why are my posts being removed" I was then banned for "complaining about the staff" or whatever that rule violation is. Pretty ridiculous.

It's a platformer made by the same team behind R-Type! It's actually hard as balls, follows the same design principle of depending on powerups to survive and dying at every checkpoint a hundred times.
The game really shines through when you have a choice of different powerups to use in the same session. It's funny how much your route changes based on what power you chose.

I actually recommend placing a savestate every checkpoint and giving yourself infinite lives, the difficulty is kind of insanely high.

I think it's because they can get away with it without the whole thread devolving into various posts of "MODS = GODS/FAGS" like it would on most of the other boards.

Anyways, if it happens, run it up the chains; this is 4chan - discussions shouldn't be squelched because someone with some modicum of control don't like them. The only reason I'm here instead of any other gaming forum was to escape from all that bullshit.

it's alright. with some refinement and fine tuning it could have been a real good game. my main complaint is the somewhat awful controls, mainly when you dash (which you need to do quite often) the screen scrolls so Rocky goes from the center of the screen all the way to left, and jumping and dashing is even worse as you pretty much lose all control of Rocky when you land as no mater where you jump it's like you landed on solid ice. it does have some cool ideas like using the different hairstyles gain new abilities to get through the levels

Like Larry Summers who gave three explanations of why women are underrepresented in higher sciences and maths then gave several possible fixes for these issues. So identifying a problem (women are underrepresented in academia in the hard sciences and in maths because of X, Y and Z) then offering solutions to these problems (doing A, B and C to get women better represented in academia in the hard sciences and in maths) is bad. Clearly, one should never identify possible reasons that certain groups who are supposedly systematically withheld from certain positions are actually underrepresented in them. It's easier to blame The Man (the big, bag bogey man: the White, Heterosexual Male) than actually figure out why these people aren't included.
Samuel Huntington received similar flack for examing various world cultures and offering explanations as to why some of them are more economically successful than others in his book 'Culture Matters.'

I remember Stephen Pinker said in defense of Summers something like 'everything is within the scope of academic discourse so long as it's presented with rigor; that's the difference between a proper university and a madrassa.'

Women just do better at some things than men do and men do better at other things than women do. It's not that serious.
