During development the original system was known as Playstation X but for some reason Sony dropped the X before the system was released. However gaming journalists at the time (gaming magazines in particular) kept using the acronym PSX and most gamers also kept using it on internets all the way up to the time Playstation 2 and PSOne, the new resigned version of the original Playstation was released. At this point the acronyms and their meaning were crystal clear to everyone PSX meant the original bigger version of the original Playstation and the new smaller redesign of it was referred as PS1.

Yes, there was another box called PSX in Japan. No one bought it and it wasn't and still isn't anyway relevant to the rest of the world apart from underage shitposters on internet forums.

Xbox. Or original xbox, or xbox huge.
An xbox 360 is a "360", and an xbox one is an xbone. The original xbox would have been the xbox one, of microsoft hadn't used the name for their new console.
Though I called the ps1 a "sony" when it first came out, but now say "ps1" when talking about the first playstation. I use psx as a generic term for all playstations, or all versions of the ps1 depending upon the situation.

This stems back to Nintendos and Sony former partnership in the 16-bit era. There was a planned SNES-CD add on as well as a stand alone console in development, which they called the playstation.
When Nintendo blind sided Sony, they decided to retool their console and rebranded it internally as that playstationX. This is still evident in the serial numbers of games where they all start with PSX with a number, which is the main reason the acronym is used. We actually see the same thing with the GameCube where the serial number of games all start with GCN.

PSX was probably used to differentiate between IBM's PS line of computers, PS/1 and PS/2, that were still popular at the time. While the PS/2 wasn't so common by the time PS2 came out, PS/2 mice and keyboards were standard on all PCs, and were marketed as PS/2 compatible, so I was often confused as which P-S-2 people were talking about and I'm sure other people were too, so why the PS2 wasn't called PSX2, I don't know.
