Mega Man 2 is a masterpiece. It's rare when everything in a game comes together so well. The art style in the game causes its 1988 graphics to age like a fine wine. Its soundtrack is one of the best composed for any game during any era. And its gameplay remains just as fun and challenging as ever.

For my money, it's the ultimate Mega Man game and one of the greatest games ever made. A must-play.

How so?

I just thought that Megaman 2 was not nearly as creative as Megaman 3, and also Megaman 2 is too easy. The levels of Megaman 2 did not flow as well, and the gimmicks were not persistently interesting. Plus, Megaman 3 introduced the slide, which I feel was a great addition to the series. The challenge is very fair and it had Protoman. Also, I feel that Megaman 3 is balanced well and 2 isn't balanced as well.

Come on guys, let's keep it civil in here. Is there any point in debating whether 2 or 3 is the best classic Mega Man? They're both amazing games in their own way. Personally I prefer 3, but that doesn't mean I hate 2 and I can totally see how someone might think MM3's challenge is "annoying". Specifically I thought that the Doc Robot stages were stupid hard compared to the rest of the game, and it really doesn't flow as well as it could.

That being said I still think Mega Man 3 had the best music in the series. I do love me some Snake Man.

Something about the bosses and the enemies in the game. I found many of them to be cheap. The Yellow Devil in Mega Man 1 is considered by some to be the hardest enemy in the whole series, but yet, the challenge seemed fair to me. What are unfair or cheap are Quickman's stage in Megaman 2(which is just memorization) and the dragon from Megaman 2 Wily's Castle (if you don't know not to stand on the left side of the screen you are dead) and the crash bombs boss and final boss (if you don't have enough crash bombs or bubble lead at that point, you're fucked).

No it isn't. You clearly don't understand the terms of discussion. An enemy that appears from nowhere obliterating everything in its path(Quickman's stage, the dragon) is the very definition of cheap because it is impossible to survive without memorization or luck(same goes with the crash bombs boss and final boss). That you think Mega Man 3 could have been better is your "opinion," but it's worthless because you haven't backed it up with any facts. By the way, having beaten Mega Man 3 is not evidence of your being good at the game because even if you are bad you can get through it using energy tanks.

I beat the Mecha Dragon on my first try. You are naturally running towards the right of the screen when it appears, so naturally you will continue heading in that direction.

The Quick Man lasers are cheap. But I still think more cheap difficulty plagues Mega Man 3 over Mega Man 2.

>beating Mega Man 3 is not evidence of your being good at the game because even if you are bad you can get through it using energy tanks.
I can beat it without using energy tanks. In fact, I planned to attempt a no-hit run of the game at one point, but instead turned my focus to Contra (which I was successful at).

>your opinion is worthless because you haven't backed it up with any facts
Then so is your opinion, because I don't see any facts to support them.

Most all gamers died the first time trying to dodge Quick Man's lasers. That's just a part of the game. If you think to think that's cheap, that's fine. But I rather like those lasers. They give a sense of reward when you master them, and are now legendary to the series. And that IS fact.

I think Mega Man 3's difficulty is a little more annoying. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. I don't suck at the game. You are wrong to say that.

You're contradicting yourself. Look, when I give examples of indisputably cheap moments in Mega Man 2, that is me giving facts to support my "opinion" that Mega Man 2 has parts in it that are cheap. I made a claim, the burden of proof was on me, and gave proof. You refuse to prove your claim that Mega Man 3 is cheap, even though, were it true, it would be easy to do so.

Worst in my book is 4. Many of the levels just... aren't fun. Music-wise, I think Dive Man stage was the only song I liked, and this is the point where Mega Man just started introducing stupid unnecessary crap such as Flip-Top or that... wire ability. Ok, so your arguments are "You have to guess weapon weaknesses!" and "It's annoying because it's annoying!" The first is true of any Mega Man game(including Mega Man 2)(and you can look them up online nowadays anyway)(and that makes it difficult, not cheap) and the second is just tautological so not an answer to my question. >Well, I beat the Mecha Dragon on the first try, so I certainly didn't find him cheap. And I still don't.
Your opinion is irrelevant. You focus on this point to the exclusion of others. You got lucky.
>Not really. My argument is more "I find it annoying." I never said it was annoying for everyone. Again, if I find something to be annoying, how can that be argued? If you don't find it annoying, then good for you. I could never argue that you don't find it annoying, because only you would know.
The question was "Why do you think Mega Man 3 is more annoying?" Do you not see how "I find it annoying." doesn't answer that question?
>Yes, that is my opinion.
You're baka. Read a book.
>I didn't give "many" examples, I only gave the ones that annoyed me the most. I didn't like guessing the weapon weaknesses for the MM2 boss revisits. Did we not just discuss this? Did you forget?
Ok, so you provided one inane example that it wasn't even clear what you were trying to say. Gee, you really proved your point. Everyone can totally see where you're coming from. No, they can see that you are flailing around and that you can barely fucking talk.
>You're the one who came on here and said I sucked at Mega Man 3, just because I found parts of the game to be annoying. I have my opinions about the game, just like everyone else does. I already stated why I have such opinions. If you don't agree with them, I can expect that. But if you say me disliking something about a game only means I suck at it, then you are arrogant.

What was not clear about it? I said MM2 boss revisits annoyed me. What don't you understand about this?

>You're really this butthurt because you think that someone has insulted your "gamer cred?"
I'm not butt-hurt. I'm merely answering all your questions. Isn't this what you wanted? And just because I corrected you when you said I suck at a game that I'm actually good at does not mean I'm butt-hurt.

Question: Why does it mean so much to you prove my opinions as false? That's impossible to do. My opinion was I find something annoying in a game. What are you trying to prove? That it does not annoy me? How would you know what annoys me? And what I find rewarding in a game?

fucking shit son, im not the guy youre arguing woth but your arguments fuckig suck. Spouting how you feel about something doesnt qualify as arguing. You say that the boss revisits in mm2 are 'annoying because they are'. you cant back up an opinion like that, a normal person will think youre a moron. if you say something like 'i think the idea of a boss rush is inane and adds unneccessary length forcing me to repeat a task i have already completed, and i do not think this is fun', youd look less like a troll. Im not saying this is the reason you dont like it, but youre arguing in circles here.

I think you may indeed be the guy I am arguing with. No offense, but your grammar is sloppy. It looks to me like you're just trying to disguise your writing style. Of course, I could be wrong, so I'm not saying for sure.

I feel I have been trolled here. I don't wish to argue my opinions, but I was heckled about them. I gave examples of why I have such opinions as well. Anon made the mistake of saying my opinions are invalid because I have no proof to support them, when in reality, opinions do not always mean facts. However, here are some facts: (1.) I'm good at Mega Man 3 when anon said I was not. (2.) Many gamers think Mega Man 2 is the best in the series. (3.) The lasers in Quick Man's stage are legendary.

I like the design of Mega Man 2 better than 3. Shit. Get over it. And learn to respect other's opinions, even if they do not match your own.

I never disrespected your opinions. Please, cite where I said your opinion was stupid. I said your arguing was, and I indeed called you a moron, but I never said you had bad opinions. I'm just saying that the other anon was looking for reasons WHY you held the opinions you did, and you constantly responded with 'I just have these opinions because I do, get over it'. I don't really think you actually read my post, because I gave an explicit example as to why you spouting your opinions was not what the other guy was looking for. and as your your numbered points here:
1) honestly no one cares whos 'better'. we're not fucking 12 here, as far as I know
2) you can not prove that by any sort of definitive margin. Many people like Mega Man 2, but who's to say Mega Man 6 isn't held in high regard in some large community you just don't know about? You can't definitively say that.
3) I agree

And I gave them to him. I told him I found the MM2 boss revisits in MM3 to be annoying. For whatever the reason, I didn't like them, and having to figure out which weapon worked for them. What more am I supposed to say about this? I found this annoying when I first played through. How do I prove this annoyed me?

>Many people like Mega Man 2, but who's to say Mega Man 6 isn't held in high regard in some large community you just don't know about? You can't definitively say that.
I agree. Mega Man 6 is also a popular game. And so is Mega Man 2. MM2 is widely popular among fans online.

>who the fuck would go out of their way to disguise their writing style on god-damned 4chan?
Someone who cannot win a petty argument, so they resort to trying to be someone else to justify their differing opinions, instead of just accepting the other person's opinions.

You say I give an opinion without stating WHY I hold such an opinion. Not true. I already gave anon reasons why. Like, I said I thought the lasers in Quick Man's stage were rewarding, I didn't like the MM2 boss revisits in MM3, I don't find the Mecha Dragon to be cheap, etc.

>Development on Mega Man 3 began at Capcom over a year after the release of Mega Man 2. The lead supervisor for the first two games quit his job at the company during that gap of time.[3] Artist Keiji Inafune, credited as "Inafking", considered Mega Man 3 as one of his least favorite entries in the series due to "[...] what went into the game and what was behind the release of the game."[21][23] He had "preset notions" about successful development because of the team's good experience with Mega Man 2 and found that his new superior "didn't really understand Mega Man the way his predecessor did".[3] During the game's production, the developers lost the main planner, so Inafune had to take over that job for its completion.[23] Inafune recalled the final two months of development as particularly turbulent, when he had to take responsibility for assessing and dividing up tasks among the team members who were not meeting deadlines.[3][24] The team was forced to put Mega Man 3 on the market before they thought it was ready. Inafune concluded, "I knew that if we had more time to polish it, we could do a lot of things better, make it a better game, but the company said that we needed to release it. The whole environment behind what went into the production of the game is what I least favored. Numbers one and two – I really wanted to make the games; I was so excited about them. Number three – it just turned very different."

7 has the best robot master fights in the classic series prior to 10. It's not even close. Early robot masters barely even feel like bosses because they die in ten seconds with just the buster.

Also, the three damage charge shot was extremely overcentralizing. Nerfing it to two was a much better way to make special weapons viable than, say, the MM6 approach.

I don't want to intrude, but I think this question is relevant and likely doesn't warrant it's own thread.

Basically, I want to get into the main series of Megaman games. I've played Legends, Battle Network, Zero, Extreme, Starforce, Megaman and Bass, pretty much every side series/game other than X and straight up vanilla Megaman.

Should I play them in order, 1 to 10, or are some skip worthy, or are some more open to beginners than others?

Also, I have pic related, but haven't gotten around to using it yet. Would that be an adequate way of playing the game? Or should I try to track down the NES carts and an NES? Are the Japanese versions any different or superior? Also, what about The Wily Wars? Is that a good way to play the first 3? I'm interested in the Wily Wars because I have a Genesis, but not an NES.

Just do them in order. Nothing in the classic series is harder than the Zero games,so there shouldn't be any problems.

Anniversary Collection is fine as long as it's the PS2 version. The Gamecube version is bugged in that the jump button makes you fire instead of jumping and vice-versa. There are no significant differences between the Japanese and American versions, and Wily Wars is a sluggish, ugly mess that's only good for its unlockable Wily Tower stages.

Inafune (the creator of Megaman) said it himself that his least favorite of all the NES games was 3 because they were rushed and the game that we got was not finished.

He pointed out how (outside of Rockman 1), 3 is the only Megaman NES game without a cinematic intro to set the story, the ending thus the whole Breakman/Blues thing ended up confusing people (Japan AND stateside)

and story/level elements were also never programmed (but found in the game inside)
Like when you find Protoman/Blues in the Gemini Man stage, he is suppose then TURN into Breakman (the animation sprites are in the rom) but the programming was never put in, thus it never happened. And every Protoman encounter after that would be him as Breakman. It was a story element that also bothered Inafune about 3.

People love 3, but they don't know about how much was missing from the final product

You were perfectly able to avoid boss' hopping patterns, and run under huge stomping things in Mega Man 2.

The criticism here is that the slide added nothing of actual gameplay-related consequence. Adding elements that force you to use it doesn't make adding a slide consequential, it just smacks of making the game more obtuse for no real reason.

That's not really an explanation, but do you realize how annoying(not to mention impossible)it would be to talk to people if we were required to prove every single detail? Even when it's obvious? Just watch people play the game, man! Or, alternatively, play it yourself! They will, and you will use the slide! Why? Because it's useful you fiend! It's useful for going fast, going in tight places, going under projectiles, and people obviously enjoy using it! What are you, the Grinch? Fun is no longer a positive aspect in games? Some people are going to apply strange abstract logic to it, sure, and end up disliking it(or perhaps other reasons. you appear to have no good ones.), but how can you say you value empiricism when there's nothing empirical about any of your arguments?

>it just smacks of making the game more obtuse for no real reason.
It's basically a run and a duck combined into one move, both are common and accepted moves in platformers.
>Does anyone actually have a reason why Mega Man *NEEDS* a slide considering he doesn't have it in what are usually considered the best Mega Man games (2, X1)?
Need it for what? Need it in order to be a fun game? No, but what relevance does that have? Are you saying that all artists should think like that? Because you will find a lot of people who will disagree with you.

>> No.1503803

>>1503736
The slide isn't a dash. Not at all.

Slide: No forward momentum, can't attack while doing it.

Dash: Retains forward momentum (combine it with a jump, for example), you can attack during a dash (and it does double damage). In some installments you can dash in the air, or even dash vertically.

>>1503759
My argument is that it added nothing of value to the game. Your counter to this is that you think it's useful (which you didn't qualify until this post) and that it's fun (which is subjective).

To address your points in order:

>useful to go fast
Through all the empty corridors in 3? Sure. But why were the corridors so long and empty in the first place?

>going in tight places
Fair enough, I guess. It seems lazy to shoehorn routes this way, though. In 2, there were a few places (Flashman's stage, for example) where there were alternate routes to travel which were harder to get to, but often had rewards. If you fucked up and fell off the platform, you're now stuck on the other path because you weren't skilled. In 3, they introduced these little 'holes' you can slide through, but a good deal of the time, you can slide back and pick the other route.

>going under projectiles
This is hardly ever the case. Almost anything that you can slide under can be jumped over. And since you can attack before and during your attack, if you can jump over a projectile, that's probably the smarter option.

Can you, and the other guy, just admit that people can bag on the slide because we hold that it adds nothing to the gameplay? I'm not saying you can't enjoy it - but we're not talking about enjoyment, we're talking about function.

>> No.1503857

Mega Man 2 is my favorite NES game. I rented it once and loved it and was so excited to get it in my Christmas stocking one year. I've played some of the other Mega Man games but I love Mega Man 2 the best. I know that sounds like nostalgia talking, and I don't care if it is.

I also liked Mega Man x. I remember buying it used at Game Gallery and they gave it to me in the Mega Man X2 box. I didn't notice until I got home. I wish I still had it even though I no longer have an SNES.

I'd like to play the other games in the series more.

Megaman 2:

Megaman:
> Doc robot stages are boring retreads.

As you probably know, European/North American MM2 had two modes: Normal mode and Hard mode. However, what was Hard mode in the west, was Normal mode in Japan, making EU/NA's Normal mode de facto Easy mode.
