>> No.1504779

>>1504776
it's bad art direction. look at mario 64. it still looks great.

>> No.1504798

>>1504776
Low poly models can actually look quite good today, but 5th gen saw a lot of awful muddy textures which made almost any attempt at "realism" look disgusting. Cartoony games with simple to no textures are known for aging well.

>>1504779
I'd have to disagree there...I don't think Mario 64 looks terrible, but the art direction was very much a product of its time and looks very sloppy by today's standards. The DS remake mostly fixes this though.

>> No.1504818

The only hard 2d platformer is Maximo.

Collectathons like spyro dont have even have pitsfalls half the time

Crash and most other 'pure' 3d platformers throw too many lives and checkpoints at you for you to ever struggle.

Maximo is the only 3d platformer I played that consistantly gives you difficult jumps and actually makes failing a jump have an impact on the game.

Those life chests are actually pretty easy to get. You know how at the start of Ice Cavern you can see the middle of the level? That's because the level wraps around in a big circle. So all you have to do is start the level, walk forward to the platform that juts out, glide off it and bend to the right. A short blind guide will get you to the secret island and three 1-ups.

I just played this game for the first time tonight. It struck me as basically Banjo-Kazooie with only music notes, only 2 moves, and bland empty levels with nothing to do and no puzzles to solve. And compared to Banjo-Tooie it's almost a bad game by comparison. Seriously, I'm bored to tears.

If you want more moves and minigames, Spyro 2 and 3 have those (some would say 3 has too many minigames but opinions). The platforming itself is generally easier in the sequels though with the minigames providing most of the challenge.

I find it funny, TR1 was a really easy game, but 2 skyrocketed the difficulty and 3 made it even more sinister. If I recall, there are enemies in TR2's earlygame that can eat as many bullets as the atlantean demons in TR1.
