What are your favorite dungeon crawlers/roguelikes?

>> No.1501723

I started playing Dragon Crystal yesterday. Fun and easy to pick up roguelike for the Game Gear.

Are you asking for games that are either or just games that are both?

Pleb. Everyone knows raw fish is tastier than over-cooked shreds of beef.

I grew up with the MS and GG versions both. I was in IKEA last year and the theme from the first few levels of the dungeons was being used in a video on a screen in the bedding section of the store. It was weird.

Even though I've moved on to harder roguelikes, Azure Dreams was my first and will probably always be my favorite.

I am a major fan of dungeon crawls. I'll suggest a few that i know of. that is to say, one's I’ve actually played to some extent.

PC - Nethack, Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, DoomRL, Privateer: The Ascii Sector, Deadcold, Desktop Dungeons, Drakefire Chasm.

There's a bunch I’m not remembering. Angband is also a very worthwhile and amazing entry, but i never got in to it for some reason. also, all the above are free.

Console: Azure Dreams, King's Field, Shadow Tower, Chocobo's Dungeon, Diablo.

Yes, Diablo is better on PC, but the console list was lacking. It's not an exhaustive list, by any means, but more then enough to get started with, if you're looking for something new.

>> No.1503110

Nethack has been my favorite roguelike for some time now.

As far as Dungeon Crawlers go i haven't played all that many, although i loved Shadow Tower.

My nigga.

This one can still be a pain in the ass if you don't bring equipment and highly leveled monsters into the dungeon with you. Naked run is best run.

>> No.1503123

Cave Noire. The format is absolutely perfect for the portable formula. I honestly wish they would port this to mobile.

>> No.1503806

Still love Nethack as the game that started it all for me, and am falling in love with UnNethack, a fork of Nethack packed full of new and interesting additions. More recently I have been getting into Sil, which I find to be absolutely marvelous in that when you equip weapons and armor, it automatically takes off the shit you are already wearing, or firing with a bow is as simple as double tapping fire. It really simplifies the unnecessarily long without compromising the outstanding learning curve, although I haven't tried Angband, which Sil is based off of, so I could be giving credit to the wrong team, but nevertheless it is nice. Rogue is an obviously required to mention game, absolutely amazing and fun. I love the chance to wind up in a room with twenty or more enemies and then choking them out in the hall.

Not sure if this counts, but Todds Adventures in Slime World. The Atari Lynx version is so much better than the genesis version. Maybe one of my all time favourite retro games.

Ragnarok, also known as Valhalla in Europe, is my favorite roguelike and I used to play it quite a bit. It was fun and I liked the theme of Norse mythology. I think you can find it easily online and it runs well in DOSBox if you turn off the sound. My brother and I used to play this game when we were kids. I recommend this game. I never beat it.

ADOM's probably my favourite roguelike, but I really enjoy the Shiren series for its aesthetics. There aren't a huge amount of games in the genre that aren't situated in generic Western medieval fantasy realms.

I can't really explain why I like it, but I've always been very fond of Swords and Serpents for the NES. Can't deny that it would be even more awesome if it had some roguelike randomization to it, but it's still really fun if you're into that brutal "dungeon crawl and nothing else" kind of game.

I've got the PS1 and PS2 versions of it.

Couldn't get my head around them so they've been in my backlog for a while.

I really wish the PS1 version got a translation. I love the old sprite look rather than the 3D of the PS2.

Shiren does this kind of thing as well. I don't know why only Jap roguelikes do this, but I like it a lot.

In Shiren, it's just sequential event triggers - stuff you can't see in one play through.

For example, you might meet a woman on one of the early dungeon levels who offers to give you a "surprise" if you close your eyes. Whilst it sounds like a neat idea (dat pixelated ass), the bitch up and blinds you. And she'll do it again if you're stupid enough to allow her.

But on another run through, you might see her cornered by a couple of guys in the local village. If you help her out, she'll blind you again holy fuck you sure are stupid. But then she'll join you as a party member.

There are a few events like this in the first Shiren game, and later ones went pretty mental with the amount of encounters.

Since it seems you haven't noticed, you're on a video game board.
The frame of reference for "achievements" is a little different in this context, no need to obsess about the bigger picture all the time.
