1503018 No.1503018[DELETED]  [Reply] [Original]

I have the strangest addiction to Harvest Moon on the Super NES. Right now, I'm playing it and trying to get the best ending possible. It's often tiresome, though, as many parts of the game feel like real work! But it's still rewarding and I can't stop coming back to play it.

Sadly, I feel the rest of the Harvest Moon games don't live up to the original. Harvest Moon 64 is cool, but the in-game clock is brutal.

Was Harvest Moon an original concept? Was it the first farm simulation game of its kind? Or were there any similar games before it?

Does the future look good for life/simulation games?

>> No.1503029

Well there was SimFarm but that was much "drier", being focused entirely on the actual workings of a mechanized farm.

>> No.1503031

idkylol but I agree. SNES and GB/GBC HM games are my favourites. I don't think the series transitioned well to 5th gen and beyond.

>> No.1503061

My relationship with Harvest Moon is odd. It's one of my favorite franchises, but I always get bored and never end any of them.

I don't think there are many (or any) games like it at all. Mostly on SIM games there is an enemy, be it a time limit, an enemy farm, and so on. What I like the most about the harvest moon series is the fact that there is no enemy.

I'm pretty sure the technical genre for Harvest Moon is Simulation/Role-Playing Game, as it features elements of both.

On one hand, you simulate a realistic life of raising animals, growing crops, getting married, etc. On the other hand, the games features spirits and character building like seen in a role-playing game.

I still remember getting a copy of Nintendo Power and seeing this small ad in the corner showcasing HM SNES. I wanted the game more than any other game before or since.

I waited four months. Four long months for my birthday, occasionally pulling out the Nintendo Power and reading the ad. I kept asking my dad - "did you find it? did you find the game for me?" and he'd get this sad look on his face, like, not yet son. It wasn't being sold anywhere.

But he was determined.

My birthday rolls around, and sure enough, there it is. Harvest Fucking Moon. I played that game constantly, and even my dad made a save file. I still vividly remember him yelling "FUCKING TURNIPS" at end game, and HM is the only game he ever played through entirely to this day.

Years pass. I get HM64, enjoy it fairly well, but I still find the SNES version more enjoyable (despite the flaws).

Recently Harvest Moon came up when I was visiting my dad. I asked him where he managed to find the game. "I went to the (local video store)," he told me, "Tried to buy it off them. They said it was only for rent, that I couldn't buy it. I offered $100. They declined. So I went back in two days later and stole it."

...

Anyways! That's my history with Harvest Moon SNES. I've recently tried to play some of the other ones from that era; Back to Nature I couldn't even get a year in, because the loading was so atrocious.

However I've recently started playing FoMT. I hear it's much like BtN but without the loading screens. However, I also read that the game "ends" when you get married.

Does it focus more on dating than farming? I'm kind of getting that vibe from the two days (in game) that I've played.

Also: Karen, Popourri, or Elli? I can't decide on this shit. (No Ann cause I hate gingers, and no Maria cause I hate nerds.

I had a similar attachment to the SNES version: obsessing over it when it appeared in a mag, never being able to find a copy. Not retro, but Animal Parade on the Wii is really good for a 3D Harvest moon if you haven't played it yet. Longer days, fun story that develops faster as you put work into it, bigger area, bigger knapsack, better learning curve; It's not the BEST, but if i were to get a HM virgin to try one for their first time, id probably give them this one, and then MFOMT.

Why does it matter what genre it falls under? Do you like it any less if you think it's a simulation instead of a role-playing game, or are you just being a pedantic asshole so you can show off your "cred" as a h4rdc0r3 gam3r? Both genres have such abstract and varied definitions that trying to make a serious argument about HM being one or the other seems totally pointless except as a way to waggle your fedora'd e-peen in our collective faces.

I always care about classification. Good classification facilitates better understanding and easier game conversation. Like when someone makes a thread about X genre and asks for more games like it. But it matters to me in particular for Harvest Moon because when Marvelous started adding more and more of these awful sim-like features to the games is when the series itself went sour.

>> No.1504994

>>1504759
It's the generic art style that irritates me. I mean, the main series Harvest Moon games at least still have a cute and homely style to it even if I do vastly prefer the look in older games. Rune Factory just looks like any other generic anime-inspired JRPG.

>> No.1505003

>>1504909

I agree with you that genre classification can aid conversation by acting as shorthand for certain attributes of a game, but more often than not it leads to manbaby nerds one-upping each other with their own personal and highly arbitrary definitions. There isn't a single, authoritative definition of any genre, let alone one as nebulous as "sim", and evoking genre to describe a game rather than explaining it on its own terms can quickly become a crutch. Telling me that Harvest Moon is or isn't a sim tells me a lot less about it than if you actually told me what you do in the game; i.e., planting and watering crops in between excursions into the town to woo its womenfolk.

Also, I gotta show FoMT some love. One of the first games I ever had for GBA, and I played the shit out of that thing. My mind was fukken blown when I learned you could marry the Harvest Goddess.

>> No.1505015

There was a really cool rpgmaker style game that was basically harvest moon 2.0: the RPG. Like the whole game took place in this tiny village, and you had most of the farming and dating mechanics of HM.

Back to Nature - the PS game - is almost identical to FoMT so don't bother with it unless you want more of the same. Personally it's my favourite though.
