I don't think there is a single game which has provided me with so much enjoyment for such a long time. Not just RTC2 but just the first one as well. The third one sucked ass. I can still play this game for hours on end.

I played a lot of the first game as a kid, but never the sequels. It always kind of looked like a big expansion pack to me.

RCT2s biggest change is that you can assign music to all rides, and you can stack scenery pieces on top of each other.
oh yeah, and placing rides gives you a 3d 'demo' of what it will look like instead of just showing the space required, which is a feature i really miss when i go back to RCT1

RCT3 goes 3d and sucks shit

Main objective is just for it to be aesthetically pleasing.

God damn I love RCT1+2 so much. 1 was essentially the first video game I ever played.

Excellent post!

This was the first PC game I bought with my own money and my whole family ended up loving it. I remember taking turns playing the campaign mode with my mom. Right in the memories.

I still have the original disc sitting around here somewhere, scratched to fuck but I can't just throw that relic out. Never bothered with the sequels...wait, didnt they start packing that in with boxes of cereal at one point? I think I had it but never played. Had a wicked version of Clue that came out of a box of cheerios that was badass.

i dont think rct3 was that bad. it had a good mod community and people made some really realistic/cool buildings. plus being able to have first person view of the rides you build was pretty cool. people made custom stalls you could fit in buildings and could vern make them look like a mcdonalds restaurant with menus behind and everything. you could make ultra realistic parks.

I'm an operations coordinator in the Magic Kingdom, and it's ruined this game for me. I can't just fire it up now, I have to carefully manage exactly how much queue space I need. I stare at a cascading ride system, and figure out what my dispatch intervals are and my ride time to figure out the exact number of vehicles that should be on the track are. Which works great but it suddenly feels like I'm at work and not playing a game.

I once recreated a local amusement park in RCT. Or at least, made it as close as possible. Took fucking forever, thanks to having 14 roller coasters. Had to make sure they were accurate.

Unfortunately, my hard drive failed and I lost all my shit. I might recreate the coasters again one day though.

I'm the OP who used to make all those threads, week after week.

I still have all the /v/-/vg/-/vr/ tracks and scenarios, all the copy-pasta, all the links, the templates, the Google doc, most of the screenshots, etc. It's in my Dropbox account.

I used to name my threads like so:
/vr/ct - RollerCoaster Tycoon - Thread xx

(xx = number of the thread)

The last thread I made was number 15, on March 14th 2013.

I sometimes changed the subtitle "Collab Parks Edition" to something like "We Jewing now Edition" or "I can't find the exit Edition" just to follow the trend of the thread, the main conversation between anons, or some kind of inside joke.

I'm surprised the mirror links still work.

Hey guys, you may want to update the RCT1 scenario conversions in the copypasta with this one:

http://www.mediafire.com/download/3cw47sd2wt3hues/ExactRCT1Recreations.zip

It was done by someone on RCTSpace who made the research trees almost exactly the same as RCT1's to give them the original feel and challenge, and more effort was put into making the scenarios more accurate in general.

I wouldn't call it cheating, but it's definitely non-vanilla. If you aren't playing the scenario and just want to play the game as a sandbox, then trainers and custom scenery really help you pull off what it is you want to create. For this park, I used the 8cars trainer almost exclusively for zero clearances and all of those buildings would be a lot more basic without it. Although I agree that there's a certain charm about the default objects that custom objects can't come close to matching.

Ooh that's useful to know. I tend to make my coasters into a big chain of uphill parts and drops which decrease in size with every one.

>> No.1500504

I get that this is the basic skill but I could never manage it. By the time you test it you've already built the ride, then if you smooth out a corner I always found it incredibly difficult to link the two ends together again.

You need to build the smallest possible coasters that you have with 5+ Excitement on both sides of the park at the start. Buy just enough land to build them and charge 10-12$ for each ride. That will quickly earn you a few thousand $ more that you can use to buy more land and rides. You can build a Wild Mouse that only requires 4x4 spaces of land or use a LIM Launched Coaster that is just a short line of squares at the start. I never build anything expensive at all. The most i spend was roughly 8000 for a custom wooden coaster. Having some scam rides already saved helps a lot since you have little room to experiment. At the end i had 23 roller coasters in the park. Don't spend any money on researching water rides or for advertisement. You don't need any of that.

Normally you can't have high excitement without high intensity, because the intensity usually contributes to the excitement. The only real exception to this is go karts. Just keep the intensity below 10.00, otherwise the excitement will drop due to pain or something.

Eventually you'll get good enough to predict how the coaster will perform while you're building and this won't be much of a problem anymore. There are all kinds of things you can do to adjust the ratings. You can improvise and convert that sharp turn into a branch of other turns and inversions to smoothly reconnect the track, or you can adjust lift hill speed and train size that might give you that teeny tiny bit of momentum the train needs to get over a hill.

There's no shame in starting small. Start with smaller coasters and work your way up. A bit of practice goes a long way.
>>1501407
Excitement and intensity go hand-in-hand on rollercoasters. You want the excitement to be at least 6 on your average coaster before scenery. Anything less is sort of lame. Intensity should be between 4 and 10, and it depends on the type of coaster. A good steel looping coaster would have an intensity rating of 6-8, while an inverted coaster is almost always above 7.

Intensity Explained:
Most coasters should have an intensity rating above 4. Anything lower is a kiddy ride, and probably has low excitement. Almost ever guest would go on a ride with an intensity of 5. 6-8 is a good sweet spot for most coasters. 8-9 is pretty high, but guests will still enjoy it. 10 is where it starts getting uncomfortable. If your intensity is 11, you will probably get a few rides, but you fucked up the design somewhere and need to look it over. 12 and above is awful and shouldn't be opened.

Nausea depends on the model as well. A junior coaster is never going to have a nausea rating above 6 unless you severely fuck up somewhere.

>> No.1501510

Would a ride that's intentionally designed to kill guests have an intensity of infinity?

>> No.1501521

Another good rule is to watch the speed of the train as it crests hills and rounds corners.

Bonus copypasta tips: best speeds for curves and loops in RCT1
Small Curve
18 mph banked, 13 mph not banked
Medium Curve
25-35 mph banked, 20-25 mph not banked
Large Curve
Go nuts..had a slight angle curve go at 88 mph didn't mess up my nausea or intense. But as a rule 45-65 banked 35-45 not banked.
Loops if you go over 27-30 mph it will jack up your nausea. But you can get away with 45 mph going into the loop.

30 mph is the cutoff for crashes, make sure your trains go slower than that when entering the station. This applies for continuous circuit coasters. Block section coasters have their own set of rules.

Just know that RCT2 has much fewer scenarios than the first game, but that can be remedied with this:

I might suggest getting rid of the two chains in the middle of the track (one at the center and the other where the car is on the left). Unless you time the dispatches perfectly, you run the chance of having cars getting stopped at those chains which will completely kill any speed it has. And the layout is small enough that you can use a smaller number of boats without having the capacity drop too low

This is a bit flexible, you can charge excessively for a ferris wheel when your park is new, but before to long you better drop dat price substantially. in your parks first year, people may pay a couple bucks for the ferris wheel, but i dont think i have ever finished a big park with the ferris wheel casting more then half a buck.

Assembly is a pretty low level code and probably the of the hardest languages ever, most of it is pretty gibberish (push something something, I think that's what Assembly is like). It's pretty amazing since RCT has pretty realistic coaster physics and financial stuff under the hood, and I'm sure that's pretty damn hard in assembly

The benefit of assembly though is that something coded in assembly tends to have a lower file size and run better, and over all have better quality. However I don't recommend you make a game in assembly unless you are really smart, stick to C or something

Programs work by instructing physical hardware to do things. A program is just a series of numbers usually represented in hexidecimal format. A computer's CPU will execute these instructions which basically involve moving or manipulating data. But programming with hexidecimal numbers as instructions is confusing we we use assembly code which is just a nunomic for the hexidecimal numbers.

So E8 becomes MOV which moves a byte (depending upon the architecture) somewhere. Unlike with high level languages in assembly you need to pysically move your data around the CPU, into registers and mathematical units.

Holy fuck I suck at this. Assembly is like doing everything by hand, high level 'programming' languages are like using power tools.

Here's a very primitive CPU built in minecraft for fun.

>>1509997
Set patrol areas for handymen. Random walking is okay when you can afford 50 of them but when you have a budget and can't afford that many, patrols are your friend. If you know there's going to be lots of litter from a food area or high nausea ride, you could probably have a couple of handymen overlap there, or set one for that specific area.
Mechanics don't need patrol areas as much as handymen but still benefit from it. One mechanic per rollercoaster. Flat rides don't need as much maintenance as rollercoasters so you don't need to hire a mechanic just for one.
Security guards should patrol crowded areas and places where you notice vandalism pops up often.
Entertainers are up to you. You can set them to patrol queue lines (where people have to stand still for a long time) and food areas (where people sit for long periods)
Every now and then you should step back and inspect the park to see if you missed a patrol on accident. Sometimes it happens, and litter can pile up. You should also check the rides list periodically to check the popularity. Guests will pay less for rides over time, and when the ride is suddenly too expensive, the popularity goes to 0%. It stands out on the chart and you can sort so it's at the bottom.

Hey guys maybe you can help me.

I'm trying to find a huge scenario that I used to enjoy playing on.

It was a large wooded area with a river running through it. I'm not sure if I remember correctly but I think it had something to do with Seattle. On one of the far sides of the map there was a harbor or shipping area of sorts.

The closest thing I've found to it is Lunatim's LunaLand, near the bottom of this page: http://www.lunatim.com/lunaland/2parks/2parks.htm[1] Pratt falls on the same page also reminds me of it a little bit.

The landscape was similar to the map above in that it was very fluid. I'm not sure what I mean by that except that the terrain looked reasonable and not like somebody went nuts with the hill tool.

I doubt anybody will be able to figure out what map this is with my cryptic description but on the off chance one of you wizards has what I'm looking for I had to try.

I'm trying to thing of other descriptors for it.

Don't worry man, you'll get the hang of it if you stick with it. When I was a kid, all I ever built was the pre-built designs because I was too stupid and unimaginative to make my own, but now that I'm older I'm capable of making some pretty neat designs, especially ones that contour along the terrain. Just remember that the momentum of the train is always going to decrease, so make progressively smaller hills as you expand your track.

I just decided to try a silly space-filling coaster design of just planes of zigzagging. The result was a gradual gain in speed of 3-5mph per plane (with the minimum 10ft separation) and, for three to four moderately sized planes (four to five zigzags), the excitement was over 2 points higher than the intensity. I'm a little disturbed by how effective this turned out to be.
