So my local retro game store got pic related in stock recently. I've never played it before but i've heard decent enough things about it and it sounds right up my alley...should i go for it /vr/? Loose price is (somewhat shockingly) listed at $19.29.

$20 isn't unreasonable. I really like the game, though it's a shame it doesn't support 2 players like the arcade version.

Good game. Not worth $20 though

God, American box art is painful.

The Japanese box art wasn't much better.

>> No.1492671

It's not really much of an RPG. Just a little action arcade game you can get through in less than an hour.

>> No.1492783

I like Magic Sword, OP. Its a sidescrolling action game with cool music where the objective is to get a high score by not dying horribly (easier said than done).

However, 20 bucks is pretty steep considering you can get the arcade version, plus about 15 OTHER games for 20 bucks total in the Capcom Arcade Collection 2 for the Playstation 2.

>> No.1492787

It's a really damn fun game. I played the hell out of it as a kid.

>> No.1492821

I'd say it's worth 20$ if you actually plan on playing it like it was meant to be played.

Took me quite a white to get the 1CC.

>> No.1492838

It's great. Pretty challenging. A ton of slow down in the SNES version.

We don't know how much $20 means to you.

>> No.1492897

It should be noted that Magic Sword is on Capcom Classics Collection Volume 2 for PS2, which I believe I picked up a few years back for $20. Yes, I know PS2 isn't retro, but since it also had Captain Commando and a few other fun games on it, I figured it might be worth a mention.

There is hardly any loading. Those games take little memory compared to actual PS2 games

He's trolling. They also aren't SNES games, they are Arcade games.

Same collection also has a handful of cool shooters (though they are all shooters for ants), Street Fighter 2, King of Dragons, and some other cool stuff. So, yeah, I wouldn't get Magic Sword for SNES if you had to pay anything more than a few bucks.

I love this game, but I wouldn't pay more than $5 for it loose. It's common and unpopular enough. The arcade version made a big impression on me as a kid, but I played the SNES game a lot more. Great music.

But anon, "Motherfucker" Mike Matei is a talented, handsome, witty, and charismatic young entertainer.

>> No.1493692

I've only played the arcade version, but:

The game is tedious. After you've played about 5 levels, there's little more to see. You'd be better off with Black Tiger and that's not a great game either.

Three things are notable:

1. The prisoners spout ridiculous Engrish like "get rid of me" to encourage you to rescue them.

2. After defeating the evil boss, you get the choice of destroying his source of power or taking it for yourself and becoming the new evil boss in a bad end.

3. The MAME name of the game is "msword". I originally downloaded it because the idea that Microsoft Word might be an arcade game amused me.

I don't even care how it plays, OP, that's just something you've gotta have. Epic. Epic for the win.

I think all the people who hate Mike are either terribly misinformed or just plain old fucking jealous of him.

>> No.1497689

I played it around maybe 2009 or so and liked it. Platforming+melee combat is generally attractive to me but usually less well-known old games are mostly unplayable levels of hard when they use that combination or they end up with bad controls. This one didn't have those issues.
